Session Handout a Tribute to the King of Pop SESSION HANDOUT A TRIBUTE TO THE KING OF POP Steve Boedt Zumba Education Specialist, Belgium & Scandinavia SESSION HANDOUT Presenter Steve Boedt Schedule 60 min: Breakdown of Moves 60 min: Master Class (Total: 2 hours) Session Objective ® • To use pop songs from an amazing artist as a base for a Zumba Fitness class ® • To use core steps from Zumba Fitness to build up a great fun choreography • Most of Michael Jackson’s songs are well known to the students, making the class even more fun. See how you can make simple core steps look fun without crossing the line of difficulty. Easy and fun to do! History & Background Michael Jackson has always been a big inspiration to Beto. We want to honor this amazing artist with a tribute to the king of pop. We will use MJ songs sung by him but also covers in a Latin beat. This class is not about imitating MJ but about embracing what impact this great artist had in the dance, artist and performing world. We all have a part of us that is connected to his music, songs and entertainment. Application of the Zumba® Formula ® • We use Zumba Fitness core steps as a base for the choreography • We follow the structure of the music. • We add flavor to the choreography that is Jackson inspired.     Curriculum-Based Study Guide Michael Jackson Dance Ensemble Michael Jackson: An American Entertainment Icon Michael Jackson (1958-2009) was an American popular recording artist, dancer, singer- songwriter, musician, and philanthropist. He is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time, having sold over 700 milllion of recordings. His significant contributions to popular music, dance and fashion, along with a celebrated personal life made him a global icon for over forty years. Figure 1. Michael Jackson in the 1980s. Born in Gary, Indiana, the eighth of ten children, Michael Jackson began his music and dance training at a young age. He was a lover tap and modern jazz, especially the work of the Nicholas Brothers, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly. Michael studied the moves of these performers closely. Michael also learned about the craft of performing from James Brown as well as many other African-American soul, R&B, and Motown artists. In 1964, at age six, Michael joined his brothers’ band as a backup vocalist and percussionist. By age eight, he was singing lead vocals with the band, which by this time was called The Jackson 5. Guided under the strict supervision of their father, Joe, the Jackson 5 toured the Midwest extensively in the late 1960s, performing as opening acts at black nightclubs. In 1968, the group was signed by Motown Records and set Billboard chart records with hit singles such as “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There.” It was during this time that young Michael was recognized as having prodigious gifts as a musician and dancer.

The litany of statistics never seems to grow less staggering: Thriller as the largest selling album in the history of the recording industry, Guinness World Records recognition as the “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time” (“Bio”), and levels of unquantifiable stardom critics claim was previously the sole territory of Elvis (Werner 272). And there is hardly a contemporary megastar who does not count him among their influences. But what exactly is the musical monarchy over which Jackson reigns? What is this “pop” that artists such as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Beyonce´ claim to emulate? As numerous radio and television stations replayed Jackson’s vast tome in the wake of his death, I realized that Jackson’s work sounds both unique and wholly familiar. Resonating with styles such as disco, R&B, and even New Wave, his music incorporates and exceeds these genre demarcations. And Jackson is somehow King of all and none.1 What exactly is pop? The general musicological conception of popular music is as a secular, accessible, “light” body of music enjoyed by a large portion of a given population (Grout and Palisca; Kerman; Manuel; Pen˜´ın; Sadie). The music is often enhanced by a star system,in which an artist’s popularity and success is determined by not only sound but elements such as their personality, private life, or fashion (Manuel 3).
