Editorial

With 54 participants at the 2005 6mJI World Cup in Sandhamn, Sweden this year’s event was an all time record entry for the event. Why was that? Certainly a large number of the 5mJI yachts were represented in Scandinavia but this in itself is not reason enough to explain why so many boats went to the start line. What was needed was a committed sailing club like the KSSS with a professional team both on land and water, then sponsors who helped to meet the significant costs, waters on which the wind and waves helped cre- ate a sailing experience and, finally, numerous owners and crews who took the time to come to the Island of Sandhamn and were also prepared to meet the logisti- cal costs. The participants in the Classic and Modern 6mJI yachts all felt they were in good hands. The ISMA would like to thank the KSSS and the sponsors once again for their efforts. As you know, this is not the first time we have been to Sandhamn and – we’ll be back! The question is what could have been done even better? I would like to take the liberty here of expressing two personal thoughts. One is intended for the KSSS: The waiting time between two races should not be ex- cessive for regatta meetings which are held under such demanding conditions. The other thought is intended for the ISMA, our world- wide organisation for this yacht class: We have all seen how many excellent, young sailors Race courses A and B have given their commitment to the crews. Most of them however do not just sail 6mJIs. As a general rule parate locations for Classic and Modern 6mJIs. they also race in sportboats. Besonderen Dank wurde auch den Eigner der Boden- see-Sechser gezollt, die Ihre wertvollen Boote für den QCNC zur Verfügung stellten. Recently Hans Oen together with Matt Cockburn have been engaged in tracking down and locating some of our great Tro- phies. As is well known, the One Ton Cup, which was initiated in 1899 by the Yacht Club de France was, as a result of the near collapse of the Six-Metres, re-alloca- ted to an RORC handicap based class. It is held at the Yacht Club de France in Paris and action has been ini- tiated and negotiations have begun by Stefan O’Reilly Hyland, President of the French Six-Metre Class to see if it could be returned to the Six-Metre Class. Other trophies under investigation are the Coppa Giovanelli and the Oresundspokalen Cup. Members of ISMA may well know of others. Sadly, due to unacceptable be- Nada in the haviour, the Seawanhaka Cup was lost and was trans- Jungle ferred to the Dragon Class some time ago and is now believed to be held by the Royal Hobart Yacht Club in Tasmania. To recover it, it will be necessary for someo- ne to mount a campaign and take a serious Dragon and crew out to Tasmania to recover it. Any offers? Meanwhile, Edmond Capart has proposed a new com- petition for the best Six from each country who wis- hes to compete, based on the concept of the old One Ton Cup, with one boat representing each country. However, the format would be somewhat different as, with the old One Ton Cup, boats were eliminated after three races if they had not won a race, thus competitors might attend but only take part in three races. The aim of a new trophy would be for countries to, eventually, commission new radical Sixes to take part with the la- test designs and most advanced ideas incorporated to take part. It is over a decade since the French and British 6 Metres have raced together and by combining the above event with the British Open Championships, the rekindling of a regular event has occurred. Benodet has much to offer the visiting yachtsman and the event had a surprising number of supporters. Amongst those were John and Twink Carter on Cheers who came over from Fowey and admirably extended the L’Entende Cordiale. Six British 6 Metres travelled to Brittany, arriving over the 18 - 20th June. Seven French Sixes joined them, one sailing up the coast during the previous week. Lifting in and registration took place on Monday and Tuesday Rees Martin et Bear ©Benoît Stichelbaut and by that evening all were in, rigged and ready. Sadly the superb Brittany weather lacked one ingre- dient; wind. While the combined events were delayed, many hours were spent off the coast in mirror seas. Three races were completed for the L’Entende Cordi- ale, Bravade VI clinching the Modern event and Capri- ce taking the Classic prize. The French-British event was held on the Saturday and Sunday, when Tim Street in Erica held off Brian Pope’s Caprice for the Classic Trophy and Jean Denis Saraquine’s Bravade VI, took the Modern prize. What the event lacked in exciting racing, our Benodet Scoundrel I et Don Wood ©Benoît Stichelbaut hosts excelled themselves in entertaining the teams. Each night was different and the peak event on the Fri- day night will be remembered by all. After the day’s sailing, all yachts were invited to sail up the Odet River and join our hosts at a feast of seafood and wine. The sight of tables piled high with langoustine was simply awesome. The dusk sailing back to the pontoons was, well relaxed… This event certainly proved that the Six Metre class is gaining momentum. Congratulations must be given to Jos Bescond, the President of the Yacht Club de l’Odet, and Stefan O’Reilly Hyland, the President of the French Six Metre Association, for organising this wonderful event. A sunny 5-12 knot breeze held for the entire seven race series in which CAN 37 Frenzy, skippered by Eric Jespersen, pretty much ruled the race course winning five of the seven races. Clas- sic and modern fleets were represented by 3 boats each and scored with a time on time handicap to arrive at the Cup victor. The key to the series seemed to be hitting the left side of the race course on the upwind leg (wind from the north) to escape the adverse tide and hook into a nice lefty. This made it important to get your boat up From Otterbank to speed before the start as it was death to tack away Boundary Cup – September 10 – 11, 2005 to the right to clear your air. Eric Jespersen and the crew on Frenzy seemingly could do no wrong, with their sole 2nd place being handed to them by Buzzy III, which was driven for this regatta by Hank Thayer. Andy Parker was a constant threat on USA 123 Finnegan, but could never close the door on Eric and his crew. Both boats can be very fast when the wind gets light. The crew on Ca Va had a difficult time making it to the regatta, finally reaching West Sound late Saturday afternoon. KC 19 Saskia II made her first appearance against other sixes after a major, keel up restoration of the 1934 Fife. Her beautiful wood mast, authentic rigging, equipment and mitered headsail made her stand out among the other beautiful boats. Hanko III Frenzy

Closing words

This year produced another series of highlights with the World Cup in Sandhamn, the friendly regattas between France and England in Benodet and the Queen Christina Nations Cup in Überlingen. None of these would have been possible without enthusiastic 6mJI owners, reliable crews, helpful sailing clubs and strict Class regulations. We must take care to preserve this inheritance, the backbone, and, as sailors in sports regattas and enthusiasts for our beautiful yachts, continue to participate in local and international events. This in itself will guarantee a continuing, growing and active class, something of which many newly created mono types can only dream. The Winter months will give us time to consider what improvements we want to make to our 6mJIs or how we intend to ‘spruce them up’, as well as to decide which regattas we wish to compete in next year. The 2006 European Championship in Flensburg will undoubtedly be another highlight. Until we meet again soon, kind regards and best wishes for a peaceful New Year.
