Vampires, Werewolves & Zombies
Story Links: Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies Selected resources for high school students compiled by Dajo Finlayson and Mia Macrossan For Years 7-9 Henry Hoey Hobson by Christine Bongers Twelve- year- old Henry Hoey Hobson arrives at his sixth school, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, to discover he's the only boy in Year Seven. Friendless, fatherless and non- Catholic, Henry is not only a Perpetual Sucker, but a bloodsucker, according to his catty classmates. When he's caught moving a coffin into the creepy house next door, it drives a stake through the heart of his hopes of fitting in. His only chance to fight back is the school swimming carnival - sink or swim in the treacherous waters of Year Seven. High Stakes by Meg Cabot Suze's new life in California is looking up. Cool friends, pool parties, good-hair days, plus the gorgeous ghost, Jesse, who hangs out in her bedroom. Best of all Tad, the cutest (live) boy in town, just asked her out! Then a screaming spirit wakes Suze in the middle of the night with a very important message. Suddenly she's on the trail of a creepy local businessman, who might or might not be a vampire. Oh, and who also happens to be Tad's dad. Suze's life just got dead complicated - again. Insatiable by Meg Cabot Sick of hearing about vampires? So is Meena Harper. Meena Harper is familiar with the supernatural. After all, she knows how you're going to die. While she's always been able to see everyone else's destiny, she's never been able to look into her own. -

Born one night when Brown was telling a bedtime story to his son, Arthur soon evolved into the book Arthur's Nose, published in 1976. Since then, Brown has written and illustrated more than thirty Arthur and D.W. books, and has illustrated many other books -- including one with his wife, author/illustrator and psychologist, Laurie Krasny Brown. Brown lives in Massachusetts with his wife and young daughter. He also has two grown sons. Brown's own childhood and the experiences of his three children are his main inspiration for the Arthur stories. Peter Brown has always loved telling stories. Growing up in New Jersey, he told stories by drawing whimsical characters and scenes from his imagination. As a teenager, he fell in love with writing and began telling his tales with words. While studying illustration at Art Center College of Design, Peter’s love of both words and pictures led him to take several courses on children’s books, and before long he knew he’d found his calling. Peter has written and illustrated many books for children and earned numerous honors, including a Caldecott Honor, a Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, two E.B. White Honors, a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year, two Irma Black Honors, a Golden Kite Award, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award and six New York Times bestsellers. I shivered as I thought about what we were doing. Wind howled through the trees, and pale streaks of lightning cracked the sky. “Hurry, Molly,” I whispered, hugging myself as the moon disappeared behind the clouds. “It’s going to storm.” “I am hurrying, Britney,” Molly said. “But the ground … it’s really hard.” We were digging a grave. We took turns. One of us shoveled while the other stood lookout. I felt cold raindrops on my forehead. I kept my eyes on the low picket fence near the street. Nothing moved. The only sounds were the scrape of the shovel in the dirt and a drumroll of thunder, deep but far away. Across from me, an old gravestone made a creaking sound as it tilted in the wind. I sucked in my breath. I suddenly pictured the old stone toppling over. And someone crawling out from the grave beneath it. Okay, okay. I have a wild imagination. Everyone knows that about me. My mom says I’ll either be a writer or a crazy person. She thinks that’s really funny. Sometimes having a strong imagination is a good thing.
