FAUNA of AUSTRALIA 20. THYLACINIDAE JOAN M. DIXON 1 Thylacine–Thylacinus cynocephalus [F. Knight/ANPWS] 20. THYLACINIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The single member of the family Thylacinidae, Thylacinus cynocephalus, known as the Thylacine, Tasmanian Tiger or Wolf, is a large carnivorous marsupial (Fig. 20.1). Generally sandy yellow in colour, it has 15 to 20 distinct transverse dark stripes across the back from shoulders to tail. While the large head is reminiscent of the dog and wolf, the tail is long and characteristically stiff and the legs are relatively short. Body hair is dense, short and soft, up to 15 mm in length. Body proportions are similar to those of the Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus harrisii, the Eastern Quoll, Dasyurus viverrinus and the Tiger Quoll, Dasyurus maculatus. The Thylacine is digitigrade. There are five digital pads on the forefoot and four on the hind foot. Figure 20.1 Thylacine, side view of the whole animal. (© ABRS)[D. Kirshner] The face is fox-like in young animals, wolf- or dog-like in adults. Hairs on the cheeks, above the eyes and base of the ears are whitish-brown. Facial vibrissae are relatively shorter, finer and fewer than in Tasmanian Devils and Quolls. The short ears are about 80 mm long, erect, rounded and covered with short fur. Sexual dimorphism occurs, adult males being larger on average. Jaws are long and powerful and the teeth number 46. In the vertebral column there are only two sacrals instead of the usual three and from 23 to 25 caudal vertebrae rather than 20 to 21. -

NATURAL HISTORY OF THE EUTHERIA INTRODUCTION Unlike the Australian metatherian species which are all indigenous, terrestrial and non-flying, the eutherians now found in the continent are a mixture of indigenous and exotic species. Among the latter are some intentionally and some accidentally introduced species, and marine as well as terrestrial and flying as well as non-flying species are abundantly represented. All the habitats occupied by metatherians also are occupied by eutherians. Eutherians more than cover the metatherian weight range of 5 g–100 kg, but the largest terrestrial eutherians (which are introduced species) are an order of magnitude heavier than the largest extant metatherians. Before the arrival of dingoes 4000 years ago, however, none of the indigenous fully terrestrial eutherians weighed more than a kilogram, while most of the exotic species weigh more than that. The eutherians now represented in Australia are very diverse. They fall into major suites of species: Muridae; Chiroptera; marine mammals (whales, seals and dugong); introduced carnivores (Canidae and Felidae); introduced Leporidae (hares and rabbits); and introduced ungulates (Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla). In this chapter an attempt is made to compare and contrast the main features of the natural histories of these suites of species and, where appropriate, to comment on their resemblance to or difference from the metatherians. NATURAL HISTORY Ecology Diet. The native rodents are predominantly omnivorous. -

The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

MAN IN AUSTRALIA : PRESENT AND PAST Human history is first of all the history of hunting and gathering communities. More than 99% of tool-making man's time on earth has been occupied by this way of life. Agriculture, cities and atomic weapons are, by comparison, an almost instant- aneous and probably unstable development out of a long and highly successful adaptation. Today, almost all hunting and gathering societies are extinct, crushed out of existence by the population densities and cultural intolerances of agricultural man. There are now no communities which remain unaffected by the modern industrial world, which is unable to tolerate any exclusions from its hegemony. Australia is the continent most recently intruded on by machine-age man. Consequently its hunters and gatherers, the Aborigines, represent the longest-lived and least externally- affected of all societies practising this economy. They can demonstrate, more clearly than any other communities, the potentials and handicaps of that way of life. This is not to imply that Australian Aborigines are representatives of Palaeolithic man, except insofar as any sample group, when studied from a particular viewpoint, may be said to embody some of the characteristics of the whole groupasdefined by that viewpoint. What the Australian Aborigines can teach us is how men and women have lived, adapted, created and innovated without so many of those mechanical aids which today we regard as essential. -

FAUNA of AUSTRALIA 25. THYLACOMYIDAE KEN A. JOHNSON 1 Bilby–Macrotis lagotis [F. Knight/ANPWS] 25. THYLACOMYIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The family Thylacomyidae is a distinctive member of the bandicoot superfamily Perameloidea and is represented by two species, the Greater Bilby, Macrotis lagotis, and the Lesser Bilby, M. leucura. The Greater Bilby is separated from the Lesser Bilby by its greater size: head and body length 290–550 mm versus 200–270 mm; tail 200–290 mm versus 120–170 mm; and weight 600–2500 g versus 311–435 g respectively (see Table 25.1). The dorsal pelage of the Greater Bilby is blue-grey with two variably developed fawn hip stripes. The tail is black around the full circumference of the proximal third, contrasting conspicuously with the pure white distal portion, which has an increasingly long dorsal crest. The Lesser Bilby displays a delicate greyish tan above, described by Spencer (1896c) as fawn-grey and lacks the pure black proximal portion in the tail. Rather, as its specific name implies, the tail is white throughout, although a narrow band of slate to black hairs is present on the proximal third of the length. Finlayson (1935a) noted that the Greater Bilby lacks the strong smell of the Lesser Bilby. The skull of the Lesser Bilby is distinguished from the Greater Bilby by its smaller size (basal length 60-66 mm versus 73–104 mm; [Troughton 1932; Finlayson 1935a]), the more inflated and smoother tympanic bullae (Spencer 1896c), the absence of a fused sagittal crest in old males and the distinctly more cuspidate character in the crowns in the unworn molars (Finlayson 1935a). -
'Belongs' in the Australian Bush: Aboriginal Responses to 'Introduced'
Indigeneity, ferality, and what ‘belongs’ in the Australian bush: Aboriginal responses to ‘introduced’ animals and plants in a settler-descendant society David S. Trigger University of Queensland This article investigates responses among Aboriginal people in Australia to animals and plants introduced through the process of British colonization. While there is some rejection of exotic species as emblematic of European dispossession, the article explores cases where certain fauna and flora have been embraced intellectually within Aboriginal cultural traditions. The broader discussion canvasses links in Australia between ideas of ‘nativeness’ in society and nature. If Indigenous people have incorporated non-native species, what are the implications for an Australian identity defined substantially in terms of ‘native’ landscapes? The article considers the significance of non-native nature for flexible constructions of cultural belonging among Aboriginal people in a post-colonial society. The concept of ‘emergent autochthony’ is proposed. Accounts of Indigenous people’s close relationship with native species of plants and animals are so common as to constitute something of a signature genre of writing in anthropology. From the extensive classic literature on totemism (e.g. Durkheim 1976 [1915]; Leach 1967; Lévi-Strauss 1969 [1962]) to more recent ethno-ecology studies discussing ‘Indigenous knowledge’ (e.g. Ellen, Parkes & Bicker 2000;Gragson& Blount 1999; Nazarea 2003), we have a plethora of case studies depicting aboriginal beliefs about the material and spiritual qualities of the natural species with which such cultures are so often intimately familiar. The peoples of the Arctic are perhaps exemplars – where humans and animals share personhood and, indeed, the perceived relationship between them may be understood as a ‘master code’ for their cultures (Fienup-Riordan 1994: 48-9). -
Inquiry Into the Problem of Feral and Domestic Cats in Australia

About the Centre The Centre for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS) is one of the world’s largest pest animal RD&E collaborations. Our current collaboration involves 17 government, industry and research provider partners. Our first vertebrate pest focused RD&E portfolio was launched in September 2018, and we have scoped a 10-year weeds RD&E investment plan. Information on the Centre and its Strategy is available at www.invasives.com.au. CISS plays a leadership and enabling role in relevant National Biosecurity System collaborative RD&E initiatives and develops new knowledge, tools and practices to continually improve best practice invasive species management. We currently facilitate 40 collaborative projects involving environmental, community and agriculturally based invasive species issues across the entire invasion curve. CISS is maintaining the knowledge and innovation momentum gained through the national collaborative research pursued through the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre and its participants. Relevant to this submission, CISS, and its predecessor, the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre has been a significant facilitator of large-scale collaborative feral cat research and research into the drivers of behaviour in domestic cat owners. We facilitated the national feral cat workshops in 2008, 2010 and 2015. Apart from cat specific research, our non-species-specific research is also relevant to cat management issues under the purview of your Committee’s inquiry. -

From the arrival of British colonists in 1788, European agricultural practices, crops and livestock transformed the landscape to one less favourable to indigenous flora and fauna. However, the six species of large kangaroos persisted and came into conflict with cropping and pastoral enterprises, leading to controls on their abundance. After mass killing for bounties, a commercial industry emerged in the 1970s to sell meat and hides into domestic and international markets. The further intention was to constrain kangaroo abundance while sustaining kangaroos in the landscape. Human–human conflict has emerged about the necessity and means of this lethal control. Further control of the abundance of four of the six species is promoted. Their abundance is considered by some as a threat to biodiversity in conservation reserves, removing these as a haven. We therefore propose returning the kangaroos’ stewardship to the current and future generations of Aboriginal Australians. We envisage that a marriage of localised consumptive (bush tucker) and non-consumptive (wildlife tourism) uses in the indigenous-protected-area estate can better sustain abundant kangaroo populations into the future.
