Film Reviews
Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man. -

Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No
For Exhibitors September 21, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 135 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising We celebrate the remarkable career of actress Frances McDormand, who has delighted audiences for 35 years with her portrayals of strong-willed and colorful heroines. Her debut to feature film was in 1984 in Blood Simple, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Joel and Frances met in 1983 during her audition for the film, became a couple and married the next year. McDormand also starred in the Coen Brothers’ comedies Raising Arizona (1987) and Fargo (1996), in which she played a very pregnant detective, Marge Gunderson, with an unforgettable Norwegian-American accent. McDormand has earned critical acclaim throughout her long and prolific career for her performances in film and television and on stage. In fact, she is one of only 24 actors to have won Academy, Emmy and Tony Blood Simple Awards, a feat known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Her most recent role is in Chole Zhao’s Nomadland, about a (1984) woman in her 60’s who sets off in a van to wander through the American West, a modern-day nomad. The film and McDormand’s performance have emerged as darlings of the 2020 International Film Festival circuit. Nomadland is being distributed by Searchlight Pictures and opens in theatres nationwide on 12/2. “I'm a character actress, plain and simple...Who can worry about a career? Have a life. Movie stars have careers - actors work, and then they don't work, and then they work again.” – Frances McDormand Three Billboards -

00:00:00 Music Music "Switchblade Comb" by Mobius VanChocStraw. A jaunty, jazzy tune reminiscent of the opening theme of a movie. Music continues at a lower volume as April introduces herself and her guest, and then it fades out. 00:00:08 April Wolfe Host Welcome to Switchblade Sisters, where women get together to slice and dice our favorite action and genre films. I'm April Wolfe. Every week, I invite a new female filmmaker on—a writer, director, actor, or producer—and we talk in-depth about one of their fave genre films, perhaps one that influenced their own work in some small way, and today I'm very excited to have writer-director Alice Waddington here with me. Hi, Alice! 00:00:28 Alice Guest Hi, April! How are you? Waddington [Music fades out.] 00:00:30 April Host Oh, I'm quite well. [Alice laughs.] Despite fires raging. 00:00:32 Alice Guest Oh my goodness. 00:00:33 April Host But I gotta say your pink jumpsuit—pink corduroy jumpsuit is really livening up the place. 00:00:39 Alice Guest [Laughs.] Thank you so much. I'm—you know, I am on my Logan's Run stuff already. So. [Laughs.] 00:00:44 April Host Absolutely. I mean, Halloween should be year-round. [Alice laughs.] Okay, so for those of you who are not as familiar with Alice's work, please let me give you an introduction. Alice Waddington was born in a rural background, but she was raised in the big city of Bilbao, Spain. -

Jigsaw: Torture Porn Rebooted? Steve Jones After a Seven-Year Hiatus
Originally published in: Bacon, S. (ed.) Horror: A Companion. Oxford: Peter Lang, 2019. This version © Steve Jones 2018 Jigsaw: Torture Porn Rebooted? Steve Jones After a seven-year hiatus, ‘just when you thought it was safe to go back to the cinema for Halloween’ (Croot 2017), the Saw franchise returned. Critics overwhelming disapproved of franchise’s reinvigoration, and much of that dissention centred around a label that is synonymous with Saw: ‘torture porn’. Numerous critics pegged the original Saw (2004) as torture porn’s prototype (see Lidz 2009, Canberra Times 2008). Accordingly, critics such as Lee (2017) characterised Jigsaw’s release as heralding an unwelcome ‘torture porn comeback’. This chapter will investigate the legitimacy of this concern in order to determine what ‘torture porn’ is and means in the Jigsaw era. ‘Torture porn’ originates in press discourse. The term was coined by David Edelstein (2006), but its implied meanings were entrenched by its proliferation within journalistic film criticism (for a detailed discussion of the label’s development and its implied meanings, see Jones 2013). On examining the films brought together within the press discourse, it becomes apparent that ‘torture porn’ is applied to narratives made after 2003 that centralise abduction, imprisonment, and torture. These films focus on protagonists’ fear and/or pain, encoding the latter in a manner that seeks to ‘inspire trepidation, tension, or revulsion for the audience’ (Jones 2013, 8). The press discourse was not principally designed to delineate a subgenre however. Rather, it allowed critics to disparage popular horror movies. Torture porn films – according to their detractors – are comprised of violence without sufficient narrative or character development (see McCartney 2007, Slotek 2009).
