Massages, dancing and fine dining can’t change the fact that many family members have a deployed spouse, but it can certainly grant them a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stressful time. A breath of fresh air is exactly what 131 family readiness group leaders experienced Jan. 22 and 23 during the second “Supporting our Spouses” Family Readiness Group Leader Conference held at the Antlers’ Hilton Hotel in downtown Colorado Springs. The conference was for FRG leaders with deployed spouses from all branches of the military, and it was fully paid for and sponsored by the National Homeland Defense Foundation as part of its Military Family Assistance Project. The conference included leadership training seminars, a three-hour time frame for attendees to pick from an array of pampering activities, and much networking among the leaders. “This is really, really great,” said Air Force wife Jan Brown as she received beauty tips from a Mary Kay specialist during the conference’s pampering session. Brown is stationed at Schriever Air Force Base, and was one of several family members representing branches of the military other than the Army. In fact, every single branch of the military including Reserve Mary Kay beauty consultant and retired Army spouse Carina Murphy gives out beauty tips to Air and National Guard components were represented at Force spouse Jan Brown, right, and Army spouse Tracy Shirley, left, during a pampering session of the second “Supporting our Spouses” Family Readiness Group Leader Conference held at the See Weekend on Page 14 Antlers’ Hilton Hotel in downtown Colorado Springs Jan. 22.

The Welcome Home Global War On Terrorism Heroes Fund directly supports activities involved with the return of locally based troops from an active theatre of operations. Donated funds are used to support welcoming ceremonies for soldiers and families, unit activities, and other functions which are not readily covered by existing infrastructure. Efforts are coordinated closely with local command structures to meet needs that otherwise would go unfilled due to the restrictions and lengthy approval cycle attached to the use of DOD funds. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PATRIOTIC BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS OF COLORADO SPRINGS TO SAY THANKS FOR PROTECTING OUR FREEDOMS AND WELCOME HOME THE TROOPS. A fund of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) agency.
