General Characteristics of the District Puducherry ,the former French colony Settled in the early 18th Century ,is a Charming Indian town with a few enduring Pockets of French Culture ,and an Ashram set beside the sea. Puducherry is a Union Territory with Legislature extending over an area of 479 Sq .kms. Comprising of four regions and two districts viz Puducherry and karaikal. Puducherry District comprising of Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 commune Panchayats total population of UT is 9,46,600 as per 2011 censes. There are 45 Large scale 132 Medium scale and 8326 Small scale Industries in the union territory of puducherry 1.1 Location & Geographical Area: Located about 160 Kms South of Chennai. 1.2 Topography: Rivers - Gingee and Pennaiyar are the major rivers in the Puducherry region. Gingee river traverses diagonally from North-West to Southeast, while Pennaiyar river forms the southern border of Puducherry region. A branch of Pennaiyar river called Malattar flows through the Puducherry region. Between 11o 46' and Between79o 36' and 12o 30' North 79o 53' East 1.3 FOREST: No Forest Area in Puducherry. 1.3 Availability of Minerals. Mineral resources - The mineral deposits in the Union Territory of Puducherry include limestone, clay, lignite, phosphatic rocks, brick clays, canker, seashells, garnet sands, laterite and beach sands etc. There are no mineral resources in the Yanam region, which is of economic value. 1.4 FOREST: No Forest Area in Puducherry. 1.5 Administrative set up. Pondicherry is a Town in Pondicherry Tehsil in Pondicherry District in Pondicherry State . Pondicherry is Main Town for the Pondicherry Tehsil . Taken together, these provide employment to more than 80,000 people. Some of the significant industries in Pondicherry are chemicals, textiles, light engineering, metals, and food processing. Special mention needs to be made of the tourism sector in Pondicherry. As a result, Pondicherry's investment opportunities are tremendous – hotels, resorts, amusement parks, and spas, all are lucrative sectors. The Indian government supports investment in Pondicherry by increasing subsidies. Sectors like eco-tourism, footwear, and marine products are some of the areas where an investment boost is expected in Pondicherry. Source:- 3.
