Environment— working towards a cleaner future

TMUK is one of Toyota‟s five worldwide sustainable plants, piloting new cleaner processes and greener technologies. As a sustainable plant, we constantly pursue a range of activities to further reduce our energy usage. Without the contribution from every employee, none of our achievements would be possible. It is important that, in these challenging times, we maintain our commitment to becoming greener and cleaner. Our key environmental objective is to minimise the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations. We are continuing to do this by seeking methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy usage, water usage and waste. Marvin Cooke

Toyota has a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) for each of the most significant aspects of Deputy Managing production. Our vehicle painting process has been compressed from two lines to one, maximising the efficiency of our spraying processes providing improved results in energy consumption and emissions per vehicle.

Alongside process improvements we have also continued to develop our activities in promoting improved biodiversity across the site. Our Green Grid project aims to restore 66% of the site landscape to natural habitat, in total 234,000m² of land will be re- planted with a mix of three habitats; Meadows, Hedgerows and Woods all from native species selected to sit in harmony with our surroundings. These wildlife corridors run through the heart of the site, attracting a larger variety of insects, mammals and birds whilst also reducing our operational landscaping costs.

Eco Day 2012 After the wettest summer since 1912, Eco day at Burnaston arrived to a sun-filled sky in July.

Record numbers of visitors toured the manufacturing shops to see the environmental kaizens and practices, as well as to enjoy the environmental displays.

Once again the Eco Pirate Treasure Hunt activity proved extremely popular with hundreds of children taking part. The starting point for the treasure hunt trail was „Ye Good Ship Eco‟ (which was made by our apprentices) where all the children were given maps and challenged to learn about the environment and wildlife.

There were many other activities to experience including owl displays, visiting the mini farm and Japanese Taiko drumming. The „test track‟ driving experience proved popular once again and the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue gave a demonstration using an ex-trial Auris on how they would extract a casualty from a road traffic accident.

The nature trail was extremely popular with a treasure hunt. Eco pirates invaded the trail in large numbers with their binoculars. They could learn about the environment and wildlife in a fun way including viewing the new Osprey nest.

Also blessed with brilliant sunshine the Engine Plant Eco Day took place with over 850 visitors attending. In the sunny atmosphere, there were lots of fun activities including a demonstration by the Cheshire Fire & Rescue, recreating a road accident by cutting a 'Volunteer' out of an Avensis. Large birds of Prey were on show, donkey rides and go-karts. Other activities included laser clay shooting, craft activities under a large Indian Teepee. Entertainment was provided by Punch and Judy and for the sports car enthusiast a GT86 was also on show.

The Lucy Prince Award

The Lucy Prince Award was introduced in memory of Lucy Prince, a TMUK employee who sadly passed away in 2010. Lucy was well known within TMUK for her tireless support of the Trust‟s fundraising activity. The award of £5,000 per annum is made to recognise an organisation in Derbyshire who contribute to improving family life for children. This year, the cheque was awarded to Alfreton Park Community School.

The Community School is for children aged 2-19 years of age who all have a diagnosis that includes severe learning difficulties or profound and multiple learning difficulties. The Award will enable the school to facilitate social activities, allowing pupils to link up and make friends, whilst extending their social circle - an area that is very limited for a child with special needs or a learning disability.

NSPCC Support

Since 2004, TMUK and the Trust have supported the NSPCC and their work in supporting and changing the lives of children and young people who have suffered all kinds of neglect and abuse.

TMUK pledged to raise £1,000,000 for local NSPCC causes. To date, over £930,000 has been raised through various employee activities, with the target of One Million Pounds expected to be reached within the next few years.

Jenni Cowlishaw, Corporate Fundraising Manager of the NSPCC said “There are many children that TMUK employees have helped, and will continue to help with every penny that they donate. We couldn‟t do it without them”.

The Community Grant Programme

The Community Grant programme supports local organisations and charities within the four focus areas to obtain tangible items to enhance their activity. The grants are awarded quarterly up to a maximum of £1,000 per grant.

Children in the Reception class of Wren Park Primary School, Derbyshire are now able to learn whilst they play thanks to the trust. The local primary school contacted TMUK to request support in purchasing a universal sand and water centre.

The Arkwright Society Lumsdale Project received a grant of £1,000 which enabled them to purchase a variety of items ranging from heavy duty strimmers to hand shears.

The Lumsdale Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is located near Matlock, Derbyshire and is a unique heritage of ruined water mills and water features. It requires constant maintenance in order to allow continued free access for the community, both local and county wide. Vital work is carried out by volunteers to remove brambles, overgrown and self-set trees, and to repair boundary walls, fences and gates.

Other recipients of the Community Grant Programme include: Coton-in-the-Elms Primary School, Mackworth Guides, Derby Hospitals Charity Trust, Simeon Grignon Memorial Fund, plus many others (further details are available towards the back of this publication).
