Walker2 Michael Chazan3,4 AFFILIATIONS: In order to investigate the buried landscape at the Fauresmith locality of Bestwood 1, outside the town of Kathu 1Department of Earth Sciences, in the Northern Cape Province, we performed ground-penetrating radar and magnetometry surveys across the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada sand-filled central portion of the valley. The radar images a strong continuous reflector which we can assign to 2Department of Archaeology, the boundary between the Kalahari sands and underlying Banded Ironstone Formation gravels. Moreover, the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, thickness of the sand delineates a buried depression in the centre of the valley with flat plateaus at the sides. South Africa 3Department of Anthropology, Subtracting the sand thickness from the current topography produces a map of a small stream channel in the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada northern part of the valley. Analysis of the magnetic gradient data allows us to extend this buried channel further 4Institute of Evolutionary Studies, to the south. South Africa: No Arrests in Lesbian Murder Case Homophobic Violence Continues Unchecked in Townships May 2, 2011 (Johannesburg) - The murder of a 24-year-old lesbian activist from Kwa-Thema township in Gauteng appears to be the latest in an epidemic of brutal homophobic attacks, Human Rights Watch said today. Noxolo Nogwaza was found murdered on April 24, 2011, in a vicious attack that seems to have been motivated by her sexual orientation. Nogwaza's face and head were completely disfigured by stoning, she was stabbed several times with broken glass, and the evidence suggests that she was raped. A beer bottle, a large rock, and used condoms were found on and near her body. "Nogwaza's death is the latest in a long series of sadistic crimes against lesbians, gay men, and transgender people in South Africa," said Dipika Nath, researcher in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender tights (LGBT) program at Human Rights Watch. "The vicious nature of the assault is a potent reminder that these attacks are premeditated, planned, and often committed with impunity." Human Rights Watch said that the government should immediately issue a public statement condemning the attack and the police should step up investigations to apprehend Nogwaza's killers. On the night of April 23, Nogwaza went to a bar in Tsakane, a township neighboring Kwa-Thema, with a female friend. Some men in the bar propositioned her friend, which led to a verbal altercation between Nogwaza and the men. Her friend left the bar and Nogwaza herself was last seen by an acquaintance soon after the fight. -

The camera was an im- portant tool to Europeans in the appropria- tion of land. In 1858, the Scottish missionary David Livingstone asked his brother Charles to photograph an expedition to the Victoria Falls (which he had “discovered” in 1855). He wanted “to extend the knowledge already attained of the geography and mineral and agricultural resources” there, in the hope that “raw material” might be “exported to England in return for British manufactures”. When those that followed came to depict the land for its own sake, they relied on a vi- sual aesthetic adopted from French art. They did not record the landscape: they “invented” it. Throughout the 19th and early 20th cen- turies, white salon photographers developed an iconography that aimed to reveal a virgin territory whose mountains, plains and tribal inhabitants illustrated the grandeur of the imperial project. -

Lesbo-phobic rape may be understood as the rape of lesbian women with the intention of ‘curing’ them of their homosexuality or making them into ‘real’ women. The progressive, yet contentious, South African Constitution expressly protects the rights of everybody to freely express their sexual identity, when it forbids discrimination on the basis of sex, gender or sexual orientation. The prevalence of lesbo-phobic rape appears to go against the developing nation’s values of inclusion and equality. However, when examining lesbo-phobic rape through a critical lens, as this study does, it becomes clear that lesbo-phobic rape is at once both an affront to the nation’s values, while also playing an integral role in shaping the nation’s identity. -

Symbolic erasure, material erasure, epistemicide Summary The research problem is aimed at identifying the various ways in which queer blackwomxn are erased in Post-Apartheid South Africa. The three levels of erasure identified are: epistemic, material and symbolic. The manifestation of these different forms of erasure overlaps and facilitates as unique experience of oppression for queer blackwomxn in Post-Apartheid South Africa. Thus, I explore the unique positioning of queer blackwomxn in Post-Apartheid South Africa by interrogating how race, gender, economic standing and sexual orientation affect the way these bodies experience citizenship and belonging. I use an intersectional approach in answering the questions of how erasure manifests epistemically, materially and symbolically. This approach challenges the singular analysis which ignores how the various identities intersect and create a unique experience of oppression for blackwomxn. Therefore, this approach acknowledges that the different systems of oppression such as racism, patriarchy and heterosexism intersect to create a specific experience for queer blackwomxn. Becoming Citizens: Lesbian Organizing and the Public Sphere in South Africa and Argentina Julie Moreau Department of Political Science McGill University August 2013 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) © Julie Moreau, 2013 Abstract This dissertation explores the emergence of lesbian civic subjectivities in the context of legal equality in South Africa and Argentina. This is done through an examination of the activism of two self-identified lesbian and bisexual women’s organizations—Free Gender in South Africa and La Fulana in Argentina. I argue that the negotiation and redefinition of multiple identities in the formation of collective identity of each group can be usefully conceived of as a process of subject formation for the public sphere. I refer to this process as lesbian organizing and argue that the subjectivities created through this process pose specific challenges to dominant discourses of citizenship in each context. In South Africa, citizenship is constituted by a discourse of ‘the gap’ between ‘rights on paper’ and ‘rights in practice.’ Insisting on a ‘gap’ between de jure and de facto citizenship generates the expectation that certain citizens will not be able to effectively exercise their rights, thus obscuring the political and social construction of the conditions of this vulnerability. Introduction ACRM was instructed by EnviroAfrica cc to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) – specialist archaeological study, for a proposed upmarket housing development on Portion 1 of the Farm Uitkoms No. 463 in Kathu in the Northern Cape Province. The HIA forms part of an EIA process that is being conducted by EnviroAfrica cc, which includes a Palaeontological Impact Assessment (PIA) by Dr John Almond of Natura Viva. The ± 112ha site is located alongside Frikkie Meyer Street on the north eastern edge of the town, inside the urban edge. A large portion of the proposed development site is occupied by the Uitkoms Horse Club, including associated infrastructure (stables, paddocks, club house, obstacle course, etc). The remainder of the site is covered in natural vegetation (trees, shrubs & grass). Most of the property is underlain by calcrete with a thin layer of red surface sands. Footpaths, roads and informal tracks intersect the site, but overall, apart from the horse club, the proposed site development is relatively, undisturbed. The property is currently zoned Agricultural I and Special Zone (Mining Area) and will need to be rezoned in order for the proposed development to proceed. -

While the Constitution enshrines the rights of sexual minorities, homophobic attitudes tend to reflect discriminatory behaviour within society. Homosexuality has been defined as un- African and news reports suggest that black lesbians are a particularly vulnerable minority in the country. While much research has focused on violence directed against black lesbians living in South African townships, this study focuses on the lived experiences of black lesbians in a university environment. South African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are considered safe spaces where students can express their sexuality more freely. For this reason I have chosen to examine the realities of an under-researched community, black lesbian students at the University of the Free State (UFS). The study has relied on a qualitative research design and semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants who come from different backgrounds but all study at the UFS. -

In 2011, I returned for my first exhibition there, and began making handprint portraits of South African artists. A Guggenheim Fellowship allowed me to continue the project through 2013. I embarked on the project and traveled widely in order to meet artists and, through them, understand what it means to be a South African artist two decades after the end of apartheid. These handprints do not reveal race, economic status, gender or age. They all follow the same format. I set up a process in which the person is responsible for the information deposited in the film emulsion — it is an assisted self-portrait. The variables are their performance and gesture, the physical shape of the hand, their body chemistry, and their relationship to me. For this exhibition at Stephen Daiter Gallery I have selected the work of thirteen artists — who are all photographers, or artists who use photography — to be exhibited along with their handprint. This is a very small group from the seventy-seven artists published in HandPrints: South African Artists, Fourthwall Books, 2015 which is itself a subset of the more than two hundred handprint portraits I made in South Africa over the three years I spent there.
