  • Teaching and Grading Guide MUAY THAI
BJC Teaching and Grading Guide MUAY THAI BROTHERHOOD STABLES | KRU BRAD ROSS 2016 © OVERVIEW This teaching and grading guide was designed to develop student’s ability and knowledge sequentially. This DOES NOT mean that students are not exposed to other ideas and concepts earlier instead this document sets out an order for evaluating student’s progress. All BJMA instructors will need to purchase the BJMA curriculum; this guide supports the BJMA curriculum and should in no way be viewed as a substitute. Techniques – The techniques contained in this document are set out in a sequential order although it is not uncommon during normal training for lower ranks to be exposed to higher rank techniques. BJC Muay Thai History When I first began training in the martial arts during the mid-Sixties (March 3rd, 1965) I developed a very keen interest in Muay Thai. But this was limited to brief newspaper articles and occasional television exposure in the form of obscure documentaries etc. During the Seventies and 1980-81-82 while Benny ‘THE JET’ Urquidez was building a reputation as the world’s best ‘Kickboxer’ (still wearing his trade mark Karate Belt and long pants) easily defeating all challengers including only the elite of Japans best champions – we had been busy in Australia (since 1976) developing the sport of kickboxing and World Kickboxing Association (WKA). All the while we just kept on hearing about these notorious fighters of Thailand. Then we heard of Holland’s Vos gym and the Chakuriki style of Thom Harinck with his top students in the early Eighties including Gilbert Ballantine, Tekken Donmez and many others; during 1983-84-85 they had gone to Thailand and trained and fought…Got knocked out - got flogged - lost on points.

  • The Leg Kick
The Leg Kick Your guide to using the shin kick in the ring or the cage. b y Wim Demeere Picture: Rob Kaman scoring a leg kick on Carmichael. Courtesy of www.fightingmaster.com Go to http://www.wimsblog.com/ for more info Copyright Wim Demeere 2009 1 Introduction I remember the first muay Thai video I bought: The most anticipated fight of that time, Rob Kaman against Ernesto Hoost. Kaman had been a champion for a while then and Hoost was a rising star. Many people thought Kaman was getting old and Hoost would make mincemeat out of him. As it turned out, Kaman KOed Ernesto after five rounds of some of the most intense fighting I’d ever seen in a ring. But what impressed me most was Kaman’s trademark move, the leg kick. He used it to punish Hoost and even lift him off his feet with it, forcing Hoost into a perfect face plant on the canvas. Pure, raw power in a single kick. What’s not to be impressed about? I went on to see more of Kaman’s fights and it became even more clear: he was an expert at using the leg kick. Even though his opponents knew full well they should be wary of it, Rob always found a way to surprise them and slam his shins into their upper legs. He was so effective with his shin kicks that he knocked out many opponents with it; they just couldn’t get up anymore. Sometimes he only needed to land a handful of his “hammer kicks” before they were left sprawling on the floor, wondering what the heck just happened.

We use the telescope bat open and closed. The telescope bat is a highly effective tool which can be used fully extended at full range as an effective tool and is easy to carry around and store at the mission belt. The DVD is both meant for amateurs who want to use the bat as a tool for self-defense, for martial artists who would like to extend their horizon, and finally for professionals such as security forces or policemen who use the telescope bat as part of their weapon spectrum. For this film we only use automatic telescope bats. Therefore we will use a big segment of this DVD to work with the closed bat in order to open it during the fight. In the second half of this DVD we show you different techniques using the open bat which can be enforced using any other traditional bat-like object, too.
