  • Guest Directory Change of Ownership & Revival of a Famous Name
Guest Directory Change of Ownership & Revival of a Famous Name The hotel was purchased by the Byrne family in the summer of 2015, returning the business to local ownership for the first time in many years. Opened in 1755 to national acclaim, the hotel was known as “The Inveraray Inn”. Our first act as new owners was to reinstate the original name. Our family has a long history in the hotel trade, is local to Argyll and also owns the nearby Best Western hotel in Crianlarich and the beautiful Ivy House, our Front Street neighbour (ask at Reception for booking details). Since purchasing the hotel, we have invested more than £1 million in a full and sympathetic refurbishment of this iconic and historic building. We hope that you are as pleased with the "new" hotel as we are. Please enjoy your stay. A Brief History of Inveraray Inveraray, at the head of Loch Fyne, owes its prominence to the rebuilding of Inveraray Castle, seat of the Duke of Argyll, in the 18th century. The town's history, however, goes back much further, since it was made a Royal Burgh in 1638 by Charles I. The Argyll family, who hold the chieftainship of the Clan Campbell, have been important players in Scottish history, with a happy knack of usually picking the winning side during centuries of bloody inter-clan feuding and bitter political in-fighting. The Campbells' contentious massacre at Glencoe of their rival MacDonalds in 1692 is long remembered, but their positive role in shaping modern Scotland cannot be overstated.

  • Records of Argyll Part Iv Conclusion
RECORDS OF ARGYLL PART IV CONCLUSION By Ken McNaughton The historic origins of the Macnachtan Clan lie in Perthshire but between the 13th and 18th centuries the leadership resided in Argyll. The reasons for this discrepancy are not known. It could be that when he gave them the castle at Fraoch Eilean in 1267 [1] King Alexander III needed defensive allies in Argyll and wanted to reward the Macnachtans. Duncan McNaughton [2] suggests the leadership may have been transferred to Argyll to weaken the Clan, since there they may have been under closer royal supervision or dominated by more powerful, loyal clans. The last Macnachtan Chief left the family stronghold at Dunderave between 1710 and 1713 [3] and the Campbells consolidated their hold on Argyll. Because of their wealth and power the Campbells had time to collect stories about their clan and those of their neighbors. Perhaps the best known (and oft quoted) such book is Records of Argyll [4] which was published in 1885. One would hope that this would include some valuable information about our Clan. But keep in mind that the author is a Campbell whose modus operandi was to collect stories and that in 1881 there were twice as many people with the name MacNaughton in Perthshire as there were in Argyll [5]. The first story about the MacNaughtons in the book [6] is called “The MacNaughtons of Dunderave” [7]. While it includes some interesting stories it is not a reliable historical document. The other main entry about the MacNaughtons is contained in an Appendix [8].

  • 2-DAY TOUR to EILEAN DONAN CASTLE, LOCH NESS & the WEST
2-DAY TOUR to EILEAN DONAN CASTLE, LOCH NESS & the WEST HIGHLANDS DAY 1 We leave Edinburgh and head west on a motorway that links the capital to Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and its industrial heartland. From Glasgow, we pass Stirling on the right, the site of the Battle of Bannockburn where, in 1314, a Scottish army under King Robert the Bruce won a crucial victory against the English. Dominating the town is Stirling Castle which sits high on a large volcanic rock. Prominently sited on a hill close to Stirling is the Wallace Monument, our first stop of the day. It is 67 metres high and was built in the 1860’s to commemorate our great freedom fighter, William Wallace, who led an army against the English and defeated them at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. He was immortalised in the 1995 film ‘Braveheart’. You will have the chance to visit the monument* and the museum inside which has Wallace’s massive sword (1.7 metres long) on display. There are excellent views from the top. At Stirling we head west. Soon we cross over the river Teith and as we do so, on the right, is the very imposing Doune Castle. Next we drive through Callander, and in the area where the Clan MacGregor reigned in the Middle Ages : the clans were extremely powerful at that time and the best known MacGregor was Rob Roy who was born in 1671. At the next village, Tyndrum, the road divides and we head north into a very sparsely populated area.

CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK / TROSSACHS NATIONAL PARK Wildlife GuidE How many of these have you spotted in the forest? SPECIES CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK Capercaillie The turkey-sized Capercaillie is one of Scotland’s most characteristic birds, with 80% of the UK's species living in Cairngorms National Park. Males are a fantastic sight to behold with slate-grey plumage, a blue sheen over the head, neck and breast, reddish-brown upper wings with a prominent white shoulder flash, a bright red eye ring, and long tail. Best time to see Capercaille: April-May at Cairngorms National Park Pine Marten Pine martens are cat sized members of the weasel family with long bodies (65-70 cm) covered with dark brown fur with a large creamy white throat patch. Pine martens have a distinctive bouncing run when on the ground, moving front feet and rear feet together, and may stop and stand upright on their haunches to get a better view. Best time to see Pine Martens: June-September at Cairngorms National Park Golden Eagle Most of the Cairngorm mountains have just been declared as an area that is of European importance for the golden eagle. If you spend time in the uplands and keep looking up to the skies you may be lucky enough to see this great bird soaring around ridgelines, catching the thermals and looking for prey. Best time to see Golden Eagles: June-September in Aviemore Badger Badgers are still found throughout Scotland often in surprising numbers. Look out for the signs when you are walking in the countryside such as their distinctive paw prints in mud and scuffles where they have snuffled through the grass.
