49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Press Conference – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

What seemed to turn it for you guys, was CB K’Waun Williams getting the interception and scoring after that. “Yeah, that was huge. We felt so good at the beginning how we came out in all three phases and then it was, the end of the second half was, for us to go down there, we were about to score, we ended up getting an interception. They go down and score. In my mind, that’s a 14- point swing. Then they come out and get a field goal to start, so that’s a 17-point swing. It’s tough to overcome against that kind of team. When K’Waun made that play I feel like it got the momentum back in us and everyone fed off each other. It was a good win.”

How much can you attribute that to what QB Jimmy Garoppolo brought to the offense? “That’s huge, definitely. Jimmy has played great. Continued to do it today. I think the guys gained confidence. I think everyone around him was playing better too. Today, getting that many points, we don’t do that without the defense either. Those guys got us the turnovers. I think we had three. I think it was three-to-one and to do that against that team. They scored for us on one and to get us in scoring position twice, it was huge for them.”

That may have been Jimmy’s first bad interception. Did you talk to him after or consult him after that interception? “Not much. He made the right read. He was throwing to an open guy. He just got hit as he was throwing it and that’s what happens. That’s the story of everyone verse that defense. If you get caught in a bunch of passing situations, it’s a matter of time before that D-Line with four gets to the quarterback. We waited on a route to develop, which is a high-risk, high-reward. You get a touchdown if it does, but the risk is trying to hold up. I’m not sure which guy it was, but it came from the right side and he got to him. That didn’t bother me with Jimmy. That’s part of football. If I don’t want that to happen, I’ve got to call a quicker pass.”

What do you think about the synergy between the offense and the defense? I mean your cornerbacks had three picks today and I think they only had two all year. “I think you can see it through the whole team. I think everything started off pretty perfect in that game and I think our guys were going. Then we faced some bad adversity coming into the locker room. I think it was 16-16 at half time and we felt like we should have probably been up by a lot more than that and to do that and them start out with a field goal. To be able to overcome that and our guys not change, that’s what I was most proud of with our team. I don’t think our guys have been affected by the highs and lows of games. I think we have a tight group who believe in each other and they feed off each other. I always feel having a tighter group is a huge advantage in this league. You’ve got to execute. You’ve got to be talented. You’ve got to make plays, but when you have guys who believe in each other, it helps overcome adversity.”

Last week you said K Robbie Gould was playing as good as any player you’ve ever coached, is the same true for Jimmy Garoppolo? “I don’t know about that. This is my first time as a head coach, so this is the first-time I can throw in a kicker. I could never do that before. I’ve coached some good , guys who’ve had some good games, some good years. But, Jimmy is playing at a very high level right now.”

Could you talk about the call on RB Matt Breida’s touchdown? Why you likedc that call, the execution of it? “Yeah, it worked out great. The guys made their blocks and we had a strong feeling they’d be in man coverage and playing the run and daring us to throw, which you know you need to get a first down there because I believe they still had one timeout, so you can’t run the clock out. But, you definitely want to make them use their last time out just in case you don’t get the first. You’ve got to always make that debate, whether to throw it there or run it. We felt good about the run, hoping they would be blitzing and be in man coverage and fake the jet sweep to [WR Marquise Goodwin] ‘Quise and the guys, I think it was [WR] Trent [Taylor] on the edge who did a good job blocking on that D-End, the outside receiver, and we pulled [T Joe] Staley around everyone and Breida did a good job hitting it. Then staying in bounds going for the score.”

With their pass rush and their pass defense, how important was it to get out to that early lead? I know obviously, you want to score every time, but was the mindset going into this game that we have to score first? “Not really. You don’t ever want to say that because then if you don’t. You’ve got to play as good as you can every situation. Like I was answering earlier, if you become one-dimensional versus that team, their pass rush and the seven guys behind them are too good. They’ll eventually get after you. When you get up to a lead early, it’s a lot better than having to play catch up. If you have to play catch up versus that team and you have to throw it, I don’t picture anyone doing very well. Getting that lead and then tying it up, I think being real good on third down today is really what helped us the most on offense. That’s what allowed us to get those runs called and stay out there quite a bit.”

What impressed you most about Jimmy’s performance today? “Just that he was consistent. I thought he played very similar in this game that he has the last few games. He made the right reads for the most part, made the right throws. I’m sure there’s a couple he’d want to have back, just like any game. It was that he’s been very consistent.”

That throw that he made to Taylor when he was rolling to his left and across his body. That has to be as difficult as a throw as there is for a quarterback. “Yeah, I showed him how to do it in practice. No, his body is different, the way he can throw. I think everyone can see that. He can make unusual throws from unusual angles and he can change that arm everywhere. I joke with him and say he’s like a jugs machine, he’s just sitting there ready to throw. It doesn’t matter how his body is, he’s just ready to throw at any time. That definitely helps, especially when you get him in some off-schedule situations and you’re going the wrong way and not a lot of people believe you can make that and he found a way to do it and Trent did a hell of a job pulling it in.”

You’ve won four in a row. You just beat the number one defense. I know what your overall record is, but right now are you almost like a playoff team? “That’s hard to say. I know we played one today and I know today it seemed like we were the better team. Today, I thought we played at a high level versus a very good team. I think we’ve gotten better each week. I know we’ve won a number in a row, but I think what’s been the coolest thing about it, I think we’ve gotten better in each game since Chicago. From Chicago to Houston to Tennessee to this. I feel like all three phases have gotten better. I want us to finish strong next week and really counting on that to lead us into next year.”

Scoring in the redzone hasn’t necessarily been this team’s strong suit through the season, how did it feel punching it in when you guys got down to the end of the field? “Continuing to grind and continuing to get better in every area. I don’t think we started out great today. I want to say we were one-of-three in the first half and we finished four-of-six. We had that turnover. Everyone had their part. We scored on an off-schedule play to Trent, I believe. We ran the ball better down there and from what I remember, I don’t think we had any penalties down there, which we didn’t have to overcome any bad situations. So, we did better today. I think we’ve done better recently. Again, hopefully that’s because we’re getting better. When you get better, things improve.”

You mentioned that you thought Jimmy played kind of similar to how he has the last three games. Doing it against that defense in particular, as much as we talked about it, does that send any more of a message to you? Is there anything else you can take away from having him do it against that team? “That was the biggest challenge for him and the biggest challenge for our offense. I think it was neat for him to get to see. We had to run more of our offense. We had to mix in a lot of keepers and things. bootlegs just to slow them down, whether we were effective or not. Their linebackers are so fast and their D-Line. You just have to keep them off balance and do some things. I thought he did a lot more stuff today that I don’t think he’s done a ton of his career. He’ll continue to do better with it as it goes, but it was pretty neat just to be able to do that stuff and him see how it all ties together and the way it helped our team throughout the game.”

Can you talk about the atmosphere today? “The atmosphere was unbelievable. I noticed it early in the game. I noticed it before the game and I noticed it all the way up to the end. They don’t have to be so loud when we’re on offense down in the redzone. They can be a little quieter, just for a little bit, but it was cool to see them pumped up. There was no doubt that affects us and we really enjoyed playing here today. It was a good setting.”

One of the times they were so loud it was an MVP chant for Jimmy. Did you hear that? “I did. Robbie told me it was for him. But I did hear that. It was cool. It was neat.”

LB Reuben Foster didn’t finish the game. He was out for a little bit. Did you just feel like it was better to shut him down? “Yeah, he got another stinger in that game. He came out and went back in. He was going and stuff. I don’t know if it was Breida, when Breida got that score, but we pulled him out at the end. He could have gone. He was battling through it, but we want to make sure he’s ready for next week.”

Can you talk about the rookies and their progress up to this point? Trent Taylor scored today. TE George Kittle scored today. RB Matt Breida scored today and then CB Akhello Witherspoon got that big INT. How would you assess their progress up to this point? “It’s been huge. That’s kind of what I mean by everyone has gotten better, especially those guys. We put a lot of pressure on those guys early in this year, playing them. Sometimes, a little bit more than they were totally ready for and we had to be patient in that aspect. But, those guys haven’t waivered. Sometimes you throw some guys in some situations where you know they can do it, but they aren’t quite ready for it. They were up and down with how good they did. When that happens, some guys kind of fold and think it’s a little too hard and they get worse and they’re just looking for someone to save them. Those guys have grinded all year and they practice every single day. They’re deliberate in everything they do and when you have people like that who work the way they do, it’s usually a matter of time before they get better. It’s been nice for them that they’ve been rewarded this way and you guys can see it and so can we.”

The silver lining is you’ve gotten to see how they would respond to adversity. How does now having success, what kind of challenges does that present? What are you looking for in your team off of this? “Just that we don’t change. I don’t want them, when you’re 0-9, I don’t want them to think that they’re as bad as people might say and when you win five in a row, you better not think you’re as good as people might say. You’re the same person everyday and you do as good as you can. That’s all I want our guys to focus on and by no means do any of us feel we’ve arrived. We’re happy that we’re playing some better football. We know that you’re never going to stay the same. We’re going to be better next week or we’re going to be worse. It’s going to be one or the other. The only way that comes is if you work and try to get better each week. I think we’ve got the right type of people here and that’s what we’ve been kind of emphasizing all year. I think our guys have really bought into it. I think they are kind of leading the way on that now.”

Is it different for you now that you’ve had some success on the field? “Not really. I feel the same now. I’m definitely enjoying things more right now. It’s always more nice to win, but the plans for us and the way we see the future and everything like that, nothing’s changed. This is part of the process. We’ve got one more game left, then we’ll relax for just a little bit and really looking forward to the offseason also.”

What did K’Waun show you so early that made you give him that nice contract? Obviously, he bounced around a little bit early in his career. “Knowing who K’Waun is. I was with him for one year in Cleveland and probably said like three words to him while we were there. He doesn’t talk much at all and I don’t either when I’m on offense. But, I watched just how he went about his work every day. He’s a guy who came in in our rookie tryout camp in Cleveland and he made our team as a rookie tryout player. Ended up starting that whole year as a nickel and did a hell of a job. I saw him get after our guys in practice every day. I know [defensive backs coach Jeff] Hafley’s been with him a while. I was only there with him one year. I think Hafley was three. We were very familiar with the type of person he is and once we got him into camp, we could see quickly that he was still the same player that we remembered. When you know the player and you know the guy and what they’re made of, he’s the type of guy you want to make sure we keep around.”

You guys only gave up one sack against the best pass rushing defense in , what do you accredit for that? “It’s a credit to everybody. It’s a credit to our O-Line for giving us time, especially versus that defense. It’s a credit to how we ran the ball today so we didn’t have to throw the ball too much. The plays we made on third down. It’s a credit to our defense for getting us in some good positions with the turnovers. Just the way the situation and the game went. It really allowed us to help out the O-Line and when we did call their number, they stepped up and we had good results.”

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo Press Conference – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

(Inaudible) “I don’t know. Heck of a game, a lot of emotions on the sideline. Ups and downs but, just proud of the way that we kept fighting as a team. We knew it was going to be a dogfight. That was a tough team. Proud of how we came out of it.”

You guys put up over forty points against the top scoring defense in the league. How much of that was your execution? How much of that was the defense helping you out? “A little bit of both. When the defense does that, what’d they have, three turnovers today? That just puts you in such good field position offensively. Momentum of the game changes. Right before half that was an unfortunate situation, but this game could’ve went a lot differently if a couple things go other ways.”

There was talk earlier this week about seeing how you would stack up against that top defense. How curious were you to see how you would do against that defense? Now that you’ve done it, how do you think you did? “I think it was a good test for us, especially as an offense. Our team overall responded. It was an overall team win today. Offense doing our part. Defense getting us field position. Special teams. It all came together really nice today. That’s what makes a good team. We’re moving in the right direction right now. It seems week by week we just keep getting better.”

You have won four in a row. Is this a playoff level team right now? “Are we? We’ve won four games, so I don’t know. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. That was a hell of a team we just beat so I think that was a good test for us. Next week is going to be another good one. Finish off the season strong next week.”

We’ve talked about red zone efficiency, that you wanted to improve on it last week. You guys were four of six in the red zone today. How was that process as far as getting better on that end of the field? “I’ve said this in the past, it’s a process. That’s probably the hardest place in the field to execute. One little thing goes wrong and the whole play goes to waste. The extra time that we’re putting in at practice and everything is starting to pay off. Just being with those guys, talking the same language, seeing the same thing. It’s all coming together now.”

Speaking of red zone, how would you describe that play where you were pressured left and moving around, and that flip to WR Trent Taylor? “Unbelievable catch. I didn’t see it until it was on the jumbotron, but what a great catch by him. O-line gave me time. I think they rushed three guys on that one so they gave me time. They covered up everything initially and we scrambled around. That’s just part of being on the same page with guys. It takes a little while to get that chemistry but I think we’re slowly moving towards that.”

Was it sidearm? Did you know what you were doing with that one? “Yeah, I always do. The guy was in front of me so I had to throw it around him. Playing paid off I guess today.”

Going against the best pass rushing group in the league today, you only took one sack. What goes into that? How do you attribute credit for that? Also, is that a little bit better than your expectations were going into the game? “I owe [OL] Zane [Beadles] on that one. I held the ball for a split second too long and they got to me. I owe him one on that. But I think the O-line as a whole just did a great job today. That’s as good of a pass rush as we’re going to face all year and in the future. Answering that test, it’s nice having guys like that in front of you that you can trust play after play. It makes my job a lot easier.”

It’s only your second game here [at Levi’s Stadium] as a 49er. I know you talked a lot when you first got traded to the organization. How much do you think you’ve embraced being here? Of course you heard the fans giving you a good cheer when you walked into the interview room. “It’s awesome. Things are going good right now. There’s a buzz in the air. You can feel it as soon as you walk in the stadium. Crowd’s going nuts just in pregame. It’s exciting. It’s a nice thing to be a part of.”

Speaking of excitement, RB Carlos Hyde made an early prediction for next year’s contenders with this team. Any thoughts about that? “Just now?”

Yep, sure did. “I’ll talk to him about that. We’re dealing with the Rams next week and we’ll look at everything else after that.”

They obviously seemed to be frustrated at times today. “Who seemed to be frustrated?”

The Jaguars, with the penalties and things. “Oh okay.”

Could you sense that? And also, how much do you take it on yourself as a quarterback to make sure your guys don’t engage in that? “We knew coming into the game. We had a good feel for that. You just know who you’re going against ant what kind of team they are. I think going into the game we talked about that and just keeping our cool. Especially towards the end of the game when they started yelling at each other before they were yelling at us. It was just something we talked about on the sideline. Proud of the guys to be pros. [WR] Marquise [Goodwin] when I scrambled, he took a shot there. For him to get up and not retaliate, I can’t put that into words how hard that is for a football player to do. That was something big.”

You got in there and you kind of made sure he didn’t. Were you making sure on it or did you kind of stop him a little? “It was an outrageous hit for the guy to do that. He’s a pro. Marquise is as pro as they come. it’s a pleasure to work with a guy like that.”

How important was it to get off to a hot start against that defense? To be able to dictate things instead of having to play from behind. “It’s important. You don’t want to fall behind and let that puss rush get rolling on you. Jumping on them early, getting that first score especially and putting them in passing situations. It all played out pretty perfectly today. That’s how we want to play.”

General Manager John Lynch said you’ve exceeded their high expectations since you’ve gotten here. How has the situation matched up with your expectations? “Well I wouldn’t want to throw those picks, those are eating at me a little bit. I think we’re working in the right direction. We knew it was going to be a process coming in here learning the playbook and all that stuff. We’re going in the right direction, we just have to keep grinding away week by week, day by day, and good things will happen.”

49ers LB Reuben Foster Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Four straight wins, you were up against the best defense in the league but it looked like you were the ones that were controlling this game. “All of us were controlling the game, up to [San Francisco 49ers QB] Jimmy [Garoppolo] and the offense and the defense, I couldn’t do it without them of course. My D-linemen were getting pressure and making guys cut back. All of us played a big role in this game.”

What do you make of this four wins in a row for this team? “It’s a new beginning, a new start. We will keep it going.”

What makes San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo so special? “It is his drive man. It is contagious. With him talking you know that he is for real. He loves the game.”

49ers RB Carlos Hyde Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

You have been through the ups and downs with this team. What do you make of this four-game win streak that this team is on right now? “It has been really good. [QB] Jimmy G. [Garoppolo] has definitely been a big difference for us. Just him coming in with that natural leadership he already has. It just has been really good for us. Putting these games back-to-back, even winning close games where at the beginning of the season we lost close games.”

How much of an emphasis was on the running game knowing that they have two pretty good shut down cornerbacks on the other side? “Every week the running game is a big deal. If we can run the ball we control the clock then that opens up play-action pass, opens up plays for the receivers, now we are able to move the ball down the field even more. So the running game is a big deal every week. This week was definitely a big deal even more with them being a top defense in the league, so we had a big task to fill. I think we did a good job of it.”

49ers CB Dontae Johnson Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

How does it feel now from the beginning of the season? “It feels great. You can feel the vibe in the locker room, in this building, during practice and on game day. It is very contagious. It is something that we have been missing and we are enjoying it. We are going to keep thriving off our current success.”

You had that pick-six today. Take us through that play. “It was an under route. I just ran underneath and I was driving it anticipating a catch and tackle because he was running away from me. It was over thrown and I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Once it was in my hands, I knew that I was in the end zone.”

49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

There was really good run/pass distribution today in terms of trying to take away their pass rush. How important was it to set up the run? “It was definitely big. One of our big focuses this week was to get the run game going. We knew exactly what we were facing with the pass rush and the secondary is very talented. I am happy that we were able to get the pass rush going. [RB] Carlos [Hyde] said that me, him and [RB] Matt [Breida] that it was going to be on our backs today to make some plays.”

They are a physical team and they seemed to get pushed around today. Is that something that you sensed and that is what they were upset about? “I don’t think that they were used to a team moving the ball up and down the field against them the way that we did. I think that we did a great job not retaliating and just letting them talk, and beat themselves up. We came out on top because of it.”

49ers TE George Kittle Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Four in a row, my goodness. What do you make of this transition this team has made from the beginning of the season until now? “A lot of it is new coaches, new players. We are just really learning to come together as a team. I think we are finding our rhythm now. I feel like we are just clicking on offense, which is one thing we struggled with early. Our defense has been playing well all year. We were just struggling from the beginning, now we are just rolling. We are on a heater. I think we are going to stay that way. Hopefully we can continue this next week against the Rams going into the offseason with another victory.”

People were saying before this game that this is a measuring stick game to see where you really stand against a playoff-bound team. How do you think this team measured today? “I thought we did pretty well. Coming out there with a big ‘W,’ that is one thing we wanted this week. We upset Tennessee last week. We all believed in ourselves and did that, so this week was no different. We came to work, and had good week of practice. We really prepared well, had a great game plan. Like I said we are on a heater right now and we are just going to stay that way.”

49ers T Joe Staley Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

What is it with this team, the four games straight, what is it? “[San Francisco 49ers QB] Jimmy [Garoppolo] is playing great football for us at the quarterback position. It is probably the most important position in team sports. He is doing a terrific job out there. He raises all shifts up there and everybody is playing really good football right now. We have a close locker room. I am really proud to be a part of it. It is pretty special here.”

How much satisfaction do you get, knowing that this offense was able to roll and get as many points as they did on their great defense? “We knew that it was going to be a really good challenge. They have been all season long kind of dictating to other teams, so I am proud of the way that we came out and was able to them. I think we had one sack and they had about 51 on the season. We were able to run the ball and score a lot of points. I don’t think that they are too happy with themselves.”

49ers WR Trent Taylor Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

It seemed they were not used to being pushed around like you were doing? “I think they kind of went on a nice little run into the half, and then scored right after halftime. I guess they are used to teams letting down at that point. We have a bunch of guys in here that love to fight and are going to fight to the end of the game, and that is exactly what we did.”

Do you wish you can start the season over? “That would be fun. I don’t like to look back and say, ‘What if?’ We are just moving forward. I like what we got going. I look forward to what we can do.”

49ers CB Ahkello Witherspoon Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

It feels like it all feeds off each other doesn’t it? “That is what the game is all about, it is momentum. When we get the touchdowns, that is what we are trying to do, by getting the crowd into the game and help our offense get a little bit of energy.”

Regardless of who the quarterback is, it feels like that all of you guys with the late season experience have dramatically improved. Do you feel that in your game as well? “Definitely, just each week is a new experience. You get new routes for the linebackers. New run fits. It is just things we are working on and improving. The only way you can do it is through trial. We will come back into the film room and we’ll work and try to get better and fix our mistakes. I think that is what I love about this group. Everyone comes to work every day with the same approach, just to improve on one thing. When all that comes together, you have success overall as a team.”

Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone Press Conference – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Opening comments: “We didn’t do enough. Like I told our players, it’s really all three phases. It starts with me, then the assistant coaches, then the players. We have to do a better job with our composure, obviously, with the penalties. We have to give credit to San Francisco. They made plays, there’s no doubt about that, and we didn’t make plays. In the end, we had three turnovers that resulted in 21 points, which is difficult.”

We have to get ready. We’re 2-1 in this fourth quarter of the season. We have to get ourselves back. One thing this team has done is they’ve always come back strong, so I expect the same thing. I told them there will be heightened awareness and we’ll look at this game, correct the mistakes, and go on to Nashville to play a good Tennessee team that beat us earlier in the year.”

Is it difficult to consider the division championship after a game like today? “This is what I told the team. I said, ‘Listen, we’ve earned that. We’ve won 10 football games. We’ve earned it, but we really can’t celebrate it.’ We know that there’s something for us this postseason. We know there’s a sense of accomplishment, but that’s something we’ll look back on. Right now our focus is correcting that, doing a better job and getting ourselves ready to play the final game of the season.”

How much can the San Francisco 49ers improve upon the fact that they have QB Jimmy Garoppolo now and are 4-0 with him as the starter? “I’ve just watched the games with Jimmy Garoppolo playing. I thought they did a great job, and I thought the defense was starting to gel. They’re doing a nice job communication-wise, and special teams is playing well. I saw a team that is really a strong football team. Obviously they got after us today. I have a lot of respect for them. They did a good job.”

There seemed to be something going on between teammates on the sideline. Were there discipline issues on either side of the team? “I’ve always been OK with sideline stuff. It’s a very emotional game. The sideline situation, those things have happened throughout my career all the time. It stays right where it is. Where I do have an issue is our composure on the field or a coach on the sideline when the players are on the field, which didn’t happen. The sideline stuff, you’re not going to get penalized for. Emotions are going to go on and that’s part of the game. Controlling our emotions when we’re on the field, that affects the team. That’s what we have to do a better job of.”

Jacksonville Jaguars RB had 48 yards on 18 carries. How concerning is it that the running game hasn’t fired in the last month, in terms of big runs? “We just have to continue to keep working and doing a better job. Early on I have to do a better job communicating to the players and coaches and put our guys in a better situation. The game was away, but then when it was tied we had the ability to run it again, but it got away from us again. We really didn’t have time where I felt that we could have committed to it when we were falling behind.”

Jaguars QB Blake Bortles Press Conference – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The San Francisco 49ers defense today, did they give you guys some stuff you weren’t expecting a lot of today? “No. Not really. They brought a couple things that were a little different, but nothing that we haven’t seen before. It’s all stuff we had practiced throughout the week and prepared for.”

The interception with Jacksonville Jaguars WR , was that a thing where he was supposed to keep going? “Which one?”

The first one, the one across the middle that got taken back. The dagger. “The one that got picked? Yeah no, he ran it right. Zone coverage, he’s got to sit down. There’s an extra guy over there, so I either have to do a better job protecting him or giving him the ball right on him or get off of him and progress.”

Odd feeling, you win the division and yet you have a result like this. Strange day in that sense? “Yeah. Very, very weird feeling. I think anytime you lose, especially playing the way we have been playing is tough, but it’s also kind of in the back of your head, that we won the division. First time in Jacksonville Jaguars franchise history, so that’s pretty cool, but you know I don’t think anyone is happy or pleased with what went on today. We wanted to win the division by winning today. We weren’t able to do that, so it’s tough. We have to get some things fixed, get some things right, and go up to Nashville next week.”

Traveling home tonight, you guys will think more about what happened on the field as apposed to being division champs? “Yeah, I know personally I would have treated it the same way whether we won it or we lost. Sit next to [Jacksonville Jaguars ] Nathaniel [Hackett] and watch the game, grade it, figure things out, how we can be better and talk about the game and move on. We still won the division despite what happened today. It wasn’t our best football game today. We are a better football team than that, we are a better offense than that. Can’t turn the ball over, put our defense in tough situations so we have to be better.”

Some of the mistakes today that you guys hadn’t happened in the past three or four weeks? “Yeah it’s just a lack of execution. It starts with me and turning the ball over and then kind of everybody understanding their assignments and executing them. I thought we had a good plan going into the week. We just have to find ways to move the ball, score points and take care of it.”

Do you look at this as the anomaly, the one off? “Yeah, I think so. I think we are definitely better than how we played today. I think that we’ll figure this out, we’ll get it corrected. We’ll be better next week.”

You guys have been pretty good at bouncing back. Does that give you confidence that you’ll get it figured out? “I think anytime we’re kind of winding down the season, you lose a game like this and you got one more opportunity before going into the playoffs you what to make sure you’re kind of clicking on all cylinders going into the playoffs. I think it’s exciting. It’s an opportunity to kind of get back on track and get rolling going into January.”

Did you feel good today about the way you were playing going into it, obviously? “Yeah, going into it I felt fine, felt good with it. Obviously, I had a couple throws I would love to have back that I turned the ball over on, but that’s going to happen sometimes in football. I thought after the first interception, to get a two-minute drive then have to go down and score a touchdown was big. I thought the guys handled the adversity extremely well. Obviously, [Jacksonville Jaguars SS] Barry [Church] making the pick in the end zone gave us that opportunity. Like I said, you just can’t turn it over three times in a game. It’s hard to expect to win when you do that.”

Talk about your resolve though, the games last year you didn’t show that resolve you showed today. Talk about just the way that second quarter drive before the halftime, seven-of-seven just talk about that real quick. “Yeah, I mean Barry made a good play in the end zone that gave us that opportunity to kind of go get some points. We got the ball and then we had a chance and then some guys made some plays and we were able to get a touchdown, like you said, before half, which was big. I think it kind of speaks to the character of the offense, character of the team, to continue to fight and keep playing. And even there at the end of the game, guys played until the very end. They played as hard as they possible can. Despite everything that went wrong during the game, at the end, kind of gave ourselves a chance there. At least a long streak of a chance. I think the bottom line is we just have to be better.”

So much emotion out of control today. What do you think? “I don’t know. It’s an emotion game. I think that’s part of what gives our team an edge, is that we play emotional, passionately. I think everybody kind of understands that we have to be able to keep that in check, be smart with it, kind of play with that rage and with that fire between whistles, make sure we’re not doing anything to hurt the team.”

The run game hasn’t really gotten going the last three, four weeks. What has to happen to kind of spark that? “We just have to figure out how to create holes and how to give, you know we have a good group of backs. We have to find different ways to create some alleys and some holes for them to run through. It’s on everybody, we’ve got to be better. I think it’s definitely the turnovers and then finding ways to run the football, you know, definitely will be a big part of that.”

Jaguars DL Calais Campbell Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Those penalties and the mistakes. That’s what beat you today? “Too many mistakes and they had more points than we did. It happens. They [49ers] played great ball today and we didn’t.”

You guys have had your composure all season. Did you lose it in the third quarter because of all of those penalties? “It is what it is. The guys know how to respond. We fought hard and had a chance at the end still, even with as bad as we played. That says a lot about our team. But at the end of the day, we didn’t get the job done. I’m proud of the guys. We’ll fight back. We always do.”

The San Francisco 49ers seemed like they had a good plan. Early on, they seemed like they were confusing your defense---? “They did some things we hadn’t seen on tape. That’s good ball. We made our adjustments, but at the end of the day we made too many mistakes and that’ll beat you every time.”

It’s Christmas Eve. It didn’t feel like that in the locker room, I guess? “It’s a 24-hour world. As bad as it is or as good as it is, you shake it off in 24 hours. We’re going to have a Merry Christmas, bounce back and go to work on Wednesday.”

Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

This locker room seems really upset by the loss. “Yes, we came here to take care of business like we wanted to. You’ve got to give them credit. They came out and played really well, and they made plays when we did.”

Turnovers were kind of the story of this game, and you guys haven’t been like that all year--? “Penalties, turnovers. Penalties that are self-inflicted that we’ve got to refrain from and not have those types of things going forward. It will be great to learn from. It’s better to have it now than two weeks. Definitely a lot to learn from, but we’ll bounce back.”

Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

What did you think of San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo? “He’s very good for their system. They found the right quarterback to go with their system. They played a good game, they had a good game plan and they executed. That’s what it boils down to. They executed their game plan better than we did.”

You had a little bit of action come your way a few times. Were you even surprised they tried to throw in your area? “I had four targets and two catches on me. No, I’m not surprised. I had a super-fast receiver [49ers WR] Marquise Goodwin on me over there. And Jimmy Garoppolo trusts his arm. I’m never surprised when I get a little action. It wasn’t as much action as I wished for, but that’s the type of offense they run. It’s a lot of bootleg-leg type stuff.”

What do you think of the San Francisco 49ers? They’ve won four straight and look like a playoff team, even though they’re not going to the playoffs. It seems like they’re clicking on all cylinders--? “I can’t really speak to what they’ve done to other teams, but they really executed well today. What they did today against us is what they did. They looked good.”

Jaguars WR Dede Westbrook Postgame Quotes – December 24, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Does it mean anything even in a loss to clinch the division and win the AFC South? “For me, I hate to lose of course. I’m a team player, but a win would’ve been much sweeter and to come into the locker room, and find out we clinched the division, but at the end of the day we’ve still got one to go. We’ve got a division opponent next week and we’ve got to prepare for them.”

How important even though things were kind of locked up where they need to be is it to get back on track now? “We’ve got to come in with the same mindset we’ve had all year. We lost one today, so we’ve got to come back and prepare for next week and get better.”
