FENCING IRELAND GENERAL MANAGER (Part time) General Information Ireland is the National Governing Body for Fencing in Ireland recognised by It is a member of the International Fencing Federation/Féderation Internationale d’Écrime (FIE), the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) the Olympic Federation of Ireland.

Fencing Ireland has benefited from a significant increase in its core funding from Sport Ireland, thereby allowing it take significant steps in expanding participation in the sport and moving towards high performance classification.

Overview of the Role Linked to this job description is the recently adopted Fencing Ireland Strategic Plan. The role of the General Manager will primarily be to oversee the implementation of this strategy. In particular, the General Manager will oversee a strategy to grow participation in the sport at all levels. The role will include in particular, the development of marketing and communications strategies for Fencing Ireland in conjunction with existing and future clubs. The General Manager will also be responsible with the Board to identify further funding opportunities both public and private. It is anticipated that the Board will, in addition to recruiting a General Manager, also have recruited a part-time Sports Development Officer. The Sports Development Officer will report directly to the new GM.

Reporting to the Board through the Chairman or his/her nominee, the General Manager will be responsible for the managing the daily work of Fencing Ireland, the co-ordination and of Fencing Ireland’s of relationship with Sport Ireland, the Olympic Federation of Ireland, the FIE, the EFC, and the systematic implementation and review of Fencing Ireland’s policies and procedures as required by the Board from time to time.

Contract This contract is offered on a Fixed Term Specified Purpose part-time basis of 18 months with a view, if inter alia, funding is available to a Permanent Part-Time basis.

Place of Work The General Manager will work from home though in time it may be possible to provide an office in Sport Ireland campus in Blanchardstown

Duties and responsibilities The duties and responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to the following:

 Oversee the implementation of the current Fencing Ireland strategic plans.  Develop a comprehensive marketing communication strategy.  Responsibility for the co-ordination of the business of Board. Duties in this respect include the preparation of any relevant documentation or reports, and implementing and decisions taken by the Board, in consultation with the Secretary, Chairman, and Board.

 Responsibility for the co-ordination of new programmes and adaptations of existing programmes as set out in Fencing Ireland’s Strategy and Implementation Plan, including those involving collaboration with external bodies or third parties. This includes delivering the relevant actions from these programmes.

 Participation in and/or leadership of working groups and/or project teams as required.

 Undertaking research, producing draft reports and/or proposals that will inform decision making, at the request of the Board and with relevant support.

 Maintaining a high level of awareness of, and familiarity with, Sport Ireland, FIE, EFC and other bodies’ policies and requirements.

 Liaising with the Development Officer to implement any Development Plans approved by the Board.

 Liaising with Fencing Clubs in the scheduling of competitions and the implementation of Fencing Ireland’s goals for Club development.

 Liaising with Coaches in the co-ordination of Coaching activities and the implementation of Fencing Ireland’s goals for Coaching.

 Promotion of Fencing Camps and co-ordination of the Satellite Competition.

 Managing the International Competition Programme including;

 Issuing EFC and FIE licences (including liaison with fencers and obtaining signed FIE GDPR forms and uploading to FIE website before issue of FIE licences).  Liaison with Selectors especially before start of season to get individual fencers’ programmes included on master spreadsheet.  FIE and EFC competition entries (based on individual plans submitted in timely fashion)  Avoiding fines for cancellations/no shows.  Maintenance of master spreadsheet of annual International Programme including results.  Logistics of Championships (Cadet/Jr/Senior Worlds, Cadet/Jr/Senior Euros). (visas/hotels/transfers) – including communication with fencers and their parents, arranging payments to organisers and issuing invoices to fencers and parents – arranging payment of entry fees.  Entry for IRL referees to FIE and EFC competitions – e.g. liaison with British Fencing.

 Attending meeting of Sport Ireland, or other relevant bodies as directed by the Board.

 Maintaining Fencing Ireland’s compliance with GDPR and Child Protection regulations.

 Undertaking such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Board.

Qualifications, experience and skills required Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in sports administration, preferably including the provision of support to decision-making bodies. Experience at a managerial level of sports development or promotion would be an advantage.

In addition, applicants must possess:

 excellent oral and written communication skills

 excellent administrative and organisational skills, including a proven ability to meet deadlines and to produce high quality documentation to deadline

 the ability to maintain confidentiality at all time.

Applicants should ideally possess:

 a significant understanding of sport governance, child protection, and policy-making,

 the ability to work flexibly and collaboratively,

 the ability to deal confidently with administrative staff at all levels in Sport Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland.

Salary scale: commensurate with experience but in the region of €35k

Working Hours:

Working hours will be approximately 30 hours per week to be arranged with the Board.
