Thank you. ii Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine current social media practice, understand the perceived utility of social media in achieving organisational goals and investigate the barriers faced by NGBs and LSPs in Ireland concerning social media use. Finally, it sought to investigate best practice recommendations in the use of social media for NGBs and LSPs. Methods: This research employed two forms of data collection in a three-phase methodology. Firstly, one semi-structured interview with a key informant was used to establish best practice recommendations. An adapted online questionnaire was then circulated to Ireland’s national population of NGBs (N=65) and LSPs (N=29) to investigate the usage, goals and barriers relating to the use of social media. Finally, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with NGBs (n=6) and LSPs (n=4) to give greater insight into the research questions posed. Findings: The response rate for this research was 48% (n=45). Overall, NGBs and LSPs used a mixture of textual and multimedia content to engage with and educate followers on Facebook and Twitter. Two main organisational goals emerged: information dissemination and promotion. The barriers identified were a lack of organisational resources, expertise and control. Best practice recommendations were made in the areas of usage, sponsorship and resources. Conclusions: For NGBs and LSPs, the perceived utility of social media lies in its ability to reach a wide audience to increase awareness of, and to promote the organisation and sport. However, it is unlikely that current practice is achieving these objectives. There is disparity between current use and best practice recommendations. This is mainly due to a lack of resources and social media expertise. It is suggested that NGBs and LSPs pool resources and upskill in order to reach best practice standards. Twenty-eight (n = 28) elite international field hockey players were recruited during the 2018–2020 seasons. Players were monitored with GPS technology and heart-rate monitors. Methods: Activity was categorised into total distance (m), relative total distance (m·min−1), high-speed distance (m; 16 km·h−1), relative high-speed distance (m·min−1), max velocity (km·h−1), and percentage maximal velocity (%Vmax). Physiological demands were assessed via heart rate measures (bpm and % HRmax) and time > 80% heart rate maximum. Results: A single rotation equated to 7 ± 0.8 min. Players covered a mean total distance of was 868 ± 132 m (125.7 ± 5.9 m·min−1) with 140 ± 39 m at high- speed (21.7 ± 3.6 m·min−1).     ULf University of Limerick SU Clubs and Societies Safety Statement Academic Year 2011-2012 UL Fencing Club ULf 1. Introduction This safety statement is designed to set out the control measures that the club/society has in place to reduce the risk associated with its activities to the minimum that is reasonably practicable. The document sets out the role of the Club’s & Society officers with respect to safety. It also sets out the standards that the Students Union requires the club/society to adhere to. The officers have overall responsibility for ensuring safety standards are high and that members are aware of these standards. Officers should bring this document to the attention of their members and explain to them the basic safety rules that all members must adhere to when participating in club/society activities. Officers should customise the Safety Statement to their own club/society requirements. If the club or society carries out any hazardous activities these must be identified in writing and an assessment of the risk associated with the activity must be made, i.e. an estimation of the likelihood of something going wrong and the severity of the injury or ill health that may occur if things go wrong. The club/society must then set out what it does to eliminate or minimise the risk. If the club is affiliated to a governing body the safety standards of the governing body must be used. 1.1 Role of the President of the Club/Society The Presidents role with respect to safety involves the following; ● ensuring that everyone is familiar with the Safety Statement, ● that there are first aiders and first aid equipment available if required, ● that trip leaders are suitably experienced, ● ensuring that novices are well looked after ● that relevant training is provided where necessary, ● and that everyone is aware of the action to be taken in an emergency.
