He was born in Blaenycwm in the Rhondda Fawr Valley on 3 February 1905, the son of Daniel and Lucy Davies. He received his education at the local school in Blaenycwm, Tonypandy Grammar School and Caerleon Training College. Having completed his course at Caerleon he returned to Blaenycwm as a teacher, becoming headmaster in 1955. In 1960 he was appointed headmaster of Bodrinallt School in the Rhondda. He retired in 1970. John Haydn Davies became conductor of Blaenselsig Male Choir in 1933, and conducted Blaenycwm Choral Society between 1935 and 1947. After the Second World War he was invited to become conductor of Treorchy Male Choir which, under his baton, gained a huge reputation, performing in concerts throughout Britain and winning eight first prizes at the National Eisteddfod. In 1961 he was awarded the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 JOHADA John Haydn Davies Papers MBE for his contribution to music. He retired as conductor in 1969 but continued as Conductor Emeritus until his death in 1991. During his tenure as conductor he also adjudicated regularly at local, semi-nationals as well as the National Eisteddfod, and also served on the Music Committee of the Eisteddfod. He took a keen interest in the history of the Rhondda Valley and especially in the Rhondda choral music tradition. He contributed to Rhondda Past and Future, a work published in 1975 under the editorship of K. S. Hopkins. He was a prominent and active member of Blaenycwm Welsh chapel. The date quoted for the LP is that printed on the Record and/or Cover. I have no idea when this particular copy was pressed or issued. The pictures in this listing are scans of the covers of the actual LP records available. NOTE 1 - The bottom of each cover picture is missing as my scanner is just too small to scan the full height, but all the width is shown as I have scanned the left and right sides and stitched the pictures together. TREORCHY MALE TREORCHYCHOIR MALE CHOIR BRIEF HISTORY BRIEF2004 HISTORY By Dean Powell,2005 Publicity Officer By Dean& Honorary Powell, Publicity Archivist Officer & Honorary Archivist JANUARY FEBRUARY Thursday February 24 Llantrisant Parish Church The Choir’s first concert in Llantrisant Parish Church was organized by Dean Powell and all proceeds went towards choir funds. An overfull audience packed the Norman church in the centre of the hilltop town. A large choir also filed into the church and from the very first note the concert was hailed a major success. Choristers Ray Daniels and Dean Powell were soloists for the evening while Dean acted as Master of Ceremonies in his hometown concert. Andrew Badham and Jan Ball were conductor and accompanist for the evening’s proceedings. The concert opened with rousing renditions of Cwm Rhondda, Laudamus and March of the Peers much to the obvious pleasure of a very enthusiastic audience. The concert was also video-recorded with a copy being donated to the choir archives. Other highlights included Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, Fantasia, Morte Christe, A Valley Called the Rhondda, Tydi a Roddaist, Comrades in Arms and the ultimate showstopper, My Way. Following the concert, which raised more than £700 for choir funds, choristers enjoyed a social evening in the nearby Cross Keys Hotel. MARCH Saturday March 5 Newent Community School The Choir’s first visit to Newent near Ross-on-Wye saw them perform in Newent Community School with guest artists, The Newent Community School Senior Jazz Band. Andrew Badham conducted the choir, with Jan Ball as Accompanist and Dean Powell as Master of Ceremonies.

  • A Thousand Voices
A THOUSAND VOICES A history of the London Welsh Male Voice Choir’s innovative decision to hold massed Male Voice Choir Festivals at The Royal Albert Hall One Thousand Welsh Voices. What a great name and what a great concept. For my fifth Lockdown project I look at one of the defining events that has shaped the choir and how a bunch of amateur musicians armed only with vision, ambition and two hundred pounds in used bank notes, managed to put on a world-renowned musical event at the Royal Albert Hall. By contacting some of the people who were present for the decision to hold the first Thousand Voices Festival, I have managed to put together a fairly detailed account of the pitfalls and rewards of such a venture and the events that led up to it. I have also included a very short history of the London Welsh Community as it has also played its part in the story. It has been interesting, controversial and informative and it has sometimes driven me to drink. My thanks to the many contributors who donated their memories. I have mentioned them at the end of this document. f there was one event that epitomised the London Welsh Male Voice Choir during the late 60s, 70s and 80s Ithen it has to be the Festival of Male Voices, held at The Royal Albert Hall. Known universally as The Thousand Voices, this Festival was innovative, successful and gained the London Welsh Male Voice Choir the global recognition that it enjoys to this day.

  • Treorchy Male Choir Monaco 2013
TREORCHY MALE CHOIR MONACO 2013 By Dean Powell, Publicity Officer & Honorary Archivist MONACO March 1st – March 2nd 2013 As the Treorchy Male Choir entered its 130th year since the original group raised their voices in song at a local public house, choristers have been fortunate to sing before some incredibly prestigious individuals. From the early days of performing for Queen Victoria at Windsor to entertaining Queen Elizabeth II and her family on numerous occasions since, the Choir has enjoyed over a century of royal recognition and approval. However in all that time the Treorchy men have not performed for royalty of other nations, until the wonderful opportunity arose for the Choir to undertake its first visit to Monaco. The invitation came from Mark Thomas, President of the Monaco Welsh Association who launched the first St David’s Day Dinner in 2012. Mark’s late father was Richard “Clem” Thomas, the international rugby player who received 26 caps for Wales, becoming Captain before retirement in 1959. Clem later became a well-known rugby journalist and author who published the first history of the British Lions. Clem’s second son Greg Thomas, who was the media officer for the 2009 British and Irish Lions decided to update his father’s magnus opus as the Lions were approaching their 125th Anniversary in 2013. Together the brothers decided that to mark this occasion they would hold a special St David’s Day Dinner, publish an updated second- edition of the book to launch that night and invite not only celebrities from film and television, but also a whole host of rugby internationals from all of the home nations.
