    Rules & regulations for the Candidates Tournament of the FIDE World Championship cycle 2016-2018 1. Organisation 1. 1 The Candidates Tournament to determine the challenger for the 2018 World Chess Championship Match shall be organised in the first quarter of 2018 and represents an integral part of the World Chess Championship regulations for the cycle 2016- 2018. Eight (8) players will participate in the Candidates Tournament and the winner qualifies for the World Chess Championship Match in the last quarter of 2018. 1. 2 Governing Body: the World Chess Federation (FIDE). For the purpose of creating the regulations, communicating with the players and negotiating with the organisers, the FIDE President has nominated a committee, hereby called the FIDE Commission for World Championships and Olympiads (hereinafter referred to as WCOC) 1. 3 FIDE, or its appointed commercial agency, retains all commercial and media rights of the Candidates Tournament, including internet rights. These rights can be transferred to the organiser upon agreement. 1. 4 Upon recommendation by the WCOC, the body responsible for any changes to these Regulations is the FIDE Presidential Board. 1. 5 At any time in the course of the application of these Regulations, any circumstances that are not covered or any unforeseen event shall be referred to the President of FIDE for final decision. 2.     Hull 2016 Grandmaster Challenge Sunday June 5th 2016 saw the third Hull Grandmaster Challenge following two successful events in 2014 and 2015 against Gawain Jones and David Howell respectively. The current world number 69 and second highest English ranked player in the world, Luke McShane came to Hull. The venue was the excellent Elizabethan Suite at the Mecure Royal Hull Hotel. The day followed the same format as previously – a blitz in the morning and then a full simultaneous in the afternoon. In the morning a blitz session Luke took on seven players (with grades ranging from 192 to 132) with just 60 seconds on his clock to five minutes on ‘ours’. A 7-0 whitewash to Luke, although he only just managed to defeat Eric Gardiner (182) with one second remaining on his clock! Ryan Burgin (192) had a n excellent position, but then lost twice on the same move (once on time and once for an illegal move – is this a record!). After three years of this blitz format the scores are: Grandmasters 18.5, Hull 1.5. Something doesn’t quite seem right here!! GM Gawain Jones 6/6 = 100% GM David Howell 5.5/7 = 79% GM Luke McShane 7/7 = 100% The afternoon simultaneous was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Cllr Sean Chaytor who made the first move on the top board (d4). There were 31 opponents with players from Harrogate, Leeds and Sheffield supplementing local players. The first player to lose ‘fell’ after 85 minutes.

    FIDE GRAND PRIX (2008/9) REPORT FOR DRESDEN GENERAL ASSEMBLY - November 2008 1.0 INTRODUCTION The introduction of the FIDE Grand Prix for the top players in the world has proven to be a success. It has not only complemented nicely the chess calendar filling in certain holes we had but secondly, it has given a number of younger “unknown” players the opportunity to play super tournaments and prove their capacity to advance in the world rankings. The overall ranking on the next page shows the very positive performance of two of these new chess forces GM Wang Yue from China and GM Vugar Gashimov from Azerbaijan. All players taking part have commented favourably on the experience and opportunity to play in the Grand Prix series. The launch of this series has now led to the development of a similar series for Women who will be given the same opportunity to play in four tournaments over two years (out of six total tournaments). The challenge in the near future is to now attract overall sponsorship for the series and this can be satisfactorily achieved once the cycle is over and sponsors / organizers can review the media and exposure that was achieved with the current series. 2.0 EVENTS AND RESULTS Two events have so far been held for the FIDE Grand Prix series 2008/9 which sees 21 of the world’s top players taking part in a cycle of six tournaments over two years. The first event was held successfully in Baku, Azerbaijan between the 20th April 2008 and 5th May 2008.

These diagrams are from White’s perspective after moves by White and from Black’s perspective after moves by Black. The openings are grouped into 6 sets. These sets are listed beginning at the bottom of this page. Right after these lists are some ideas for ways you might use these openings in your training. A note to chess coaches: Although the openings in this book give approximately even chances to White and Black, it won’t always look that way to inexperienced players. This can present problems for players who are continuing a game after using the opening moves listed in this booklet. Some players will need assistance to see how certain temporarily disadvantaged positions can be equalized. A good example of where some hints from the coach might come in handy is the sample King’s Gambit Declined (Set F, Game 2). At the end of the listed moves, White is down by a queen and has no immediate opportunity for a recapture. If White doesn’t analyze the board closely and misses the essential move Bb5+, he will have a lost position.
