Robert (Bob) McGrath Mr. Bob McGrath is an American entertainer, author and humanitarian who has made a long‐ term commitment to Saskatchewan. A 1954 graduate of the University of Michigan’s School of Music, he later earned a masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Prior to joining the inaugural cast of iconic children’s program Sesame Street in 1969, Mr. McGrath cultivated a successful international music career as a lyric tenor. Mr. McGrath was the featured male soloist for the NBC Sing Along With Mitch television program, and was a Japanese teen sensation known as “Bobu Magulas”. In his 43 years entertaining and educating children as resident music teacher “Bob” on Sesame Street, he has recorded eight children’s albums, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide. He has authored two best‐selling books and a creative music curriculum for educators. Since 1977, he has volunteered his time to host the children’s fundraiser Telemiracle 35 times, with the 36th slated for this year. In addition to this commitment to charity in Saskatchewan, Mr. McGrath has appeared with more than 100 symphony orchestras in the USA and Canada, hosted the Universal Children’s Day at the United Nations, and has hosted Variety, The Children’s Charity Telethon in Vancouver and The Children’s Charity Telethon in New York for 35 and 10 years respectively. Mr. McGrath’s many selfless contributions and achievements have resulted in multiple awards and honours, including the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan in 2006. Mr. McGrath and his wife, Ann, recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Together they have five children and eight grandchildren. .

Season 50’s Primetime Special Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration is an all-ages primetime event that offers a sweeping look back at fifty years on the Street. Hosted by Joseph Gordon Levitt, the special reimagines classic segments and songs as the Sesame Street gang gets ready for a big party to celebrate the neighborhood’s 50th birthday. When the famous street sign goes missing before the party, it’s up to Elmo, Rosita, Grover, and Abby to track it down, while Big Bird and Snuffy plan a surprise of their own. This star-studded special includes cameos from rare characters like Roosevelt Franklin and Kermit the Frog, and visits from celebrity guests. Bob McGrath just celebrated his 38th year on Sesame Street and has bridged two generations Bob McGrath of viewers as one of the original hosts. In addition to his role as the music teacher or a pied piper of Sesame Street he is an award-winning recording artist, concert performer, and successful author, writing both children’s books and music cur- riculum. Bob has performed thousands of family pops educational and holiday concerts for audiences who are now bringing their children or Sesame Seeds to see and hear their friend, Bob. Bob: Well, I guess if it wasn’t for my mom, who was very musical – she played piano and so forth – in getting me sort out of the starting gate, singing at five years old at every function imaginable weddings, PTA meetings, and everything. I was sing- ing at the Roxy Theatre in Ottawa when I was five. I probably never would have followed that sort of musical path. That was all from my mom. My dad was totally tone deaf but he was very encouraging for my singing.

From its origins in Florence, opera has existed as a significant source of cultural and national identity through sharing stories from different nations, addressing social and political issues, and creating new meanings and trends through the combination of old and new. In parallel with contemporary globalization developments, opera continually attempts to reinvent itself by becoming ever more communal, more accessible, and cross-culturally adaptable. This dissertation considers the involvement of children in the merging of music and drama as part of the unbroken tradition dating back to ancient Greece. Opera is capable of entertaining and educating younger generations either as active participants or audience members. It offers the potential to reveal new ideas, illustrate aspects of diverse cultures, support intellectual progress, and facilitate educational and artistic creativity. As a composer and a teaching artist with many years of experience working with children and youth, my teaching philosophy encompasses informing the younger generation about their own cultural values in addition to those of others. This approach supports educational development and encourages the development of strong creative voices in a more diverse society of the future.
