It seemed that someone had walked off with a large part of this school in transit from Bay.side'to this area. Not the least of the missing items were the books that belonged to the York College Library. For months, the shelves remained empty while students had to travel all over the map, in order to find research materials. It was a great hardship, particularly for those who had to write papers,; and had absolutely nothing to work with. The Central Library on Merrick Boulevard, for example, has a habit of being out of just about every book when they are needed the worst.

PROGRAMS & EXHIBITIONS Winter/Spring 2020 To purchase tickets by phone call (212) 485-9268 letter | exhibitions | calendar | programs | family | membership | general information Dear Friends, Until recently, American democracy wasn’t up for debate—it was simply fundamental to our way of life. But things have changed, don’t you agree? According to a recent survey, less than a third of Americans born after 1980 consider it essential to live in a democracy. Here at New-York Historical, our outlook is nonpartisan Buck Ennis, Crain’s New York Business and our audiences represent the entire political spectrum. But there is one thing we all agree on: living in a democracy is essential indeed. The exhibitions and public programs you find in the following pages bear witness to this view, speaking to the importance of our democratic principles and the American institutions that carry them out. A spectacular new exhibition on the history of women’s suffrage in our Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Gallery this spring sheds new light on the movements that led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution 100 years ago; a major exhibition on Bill Graham, a refugee from Nazi Germany who brought us the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, and many other staples of rock & roll, stresses our proud democratic tradition of welcoming immigrants and refugees; and, as part of a unique New-York Historical–Asia Society collaboration during Asia Society’s inaugural Triennial, an exhibition of extraordinary works from both institutions will be accompanied by a new site-specific performance by drummer/composer Susie Ibarra in our Patricia D.

  • Robert Klein: 'Better Than I Ever Was'
Robert Klein: 'Better than I ever was' By JAMI KUNZER [email protected] APRIL 3, 2014 • 10:05:09 A.M. Before Jay Leno, Billy Crystal or Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Klein was delivering the type of observational jokes they’d emulate. As Leno revealed during his final episode of “The Tonight Show,” a poster of Klein was the only thing hanging in his apartment when he struggled as an aspiring comedian in the 1970s. When Klein first began entertaining audiences more than 40 years ago, comedians were a different breed. They wore cuff links and tuxedos. They stood out. Klein was pretty much like everybody else. His jokes weren’t one-liners. He talked about what everyone else was talking about. He made life funny. “My material has always been organic,” he said. “I talk about life... Just like a good novel, if you make good observations, it’s universal.” And at age 72, he’s still making life funny. He’ll take the stage – his favorite place to be – for another one-man show at 8 p.m. April 5 at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake. It’s a show, Klein said, that might surprise people. “After so many years in the business, I’m still a well-kept secret in person,” he said. “I’ve never been a big tour guy . In person, it’s a much different thing than a few minutes on [David] Letterman’s couch.” It’s a couch he’s been on about 50 times, by the way.

  • Comedy Legend Robert Klein Comes to the Raue Center
April 01, 2014 12:10 p.m. Comedy legend Robert Klein comes to the Raue Center By: Annie Alleman | For Sun-Times Media If you watched Jay Leno’s last “Tonight Show” in February, you might have caught Billy Crystal referencing Robert Klein. He was reminiscing about visiting Leno’s “bomb site” apartment in Boston when they were up-and-coming comics, and Leno had a poster of Klein above his bed. Robert Klein, the legendary comedian who influenced a generation of comics, is coming to the Raue Center for the Arts on April 5. Although born and raised in The Bronx, Klein got his start at Second City. “I reported for work with Fred Willard in March of ’65 on Wells Street in Chicago,” he said. That led to a career that has included Grammy, Emmy and Tony award nominations, 82 guest appearances on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” plus about 50 appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman.” In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on HBO. He has gone on to do nine one-man shows for HBO. His most recent special, “Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced,” aired in 2010. He co-starred in the NBC series “Sisters,” and had a recurring role on “Law and Order.” Recently, he’s been on “Royal Pains” and “The Good Wife” — he just finished shooting an episode which will air in a couple of weeks. On April 1, he recorded an episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s web series, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” To this day, he favors standup comedy over acting, dancing or even sitting behind a microphone.
