For more than forty years, Robert Klein has entertained audiences, and he continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy, on Broadway, on television, and in film. He was nominated twice for Grammy Awards for “Best Comedy Album of the Year” for his albums “Child of the Fifties” and “Mind Over Matter.” In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on Home Box Office. He has gone on to do nine one- man shows for HBO and received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics in 2001 for Robert Klein: “Child in His 50’s.” Klein released “Robert Klein: The HBO Specials 1975-2005,” a collector’s DVD box set to critical acclaim. Among dozens of starring and guest-starring roles on television, he co-starred in the hit NBC series, “Sisters,” has a recurring guest-starring role on “Law and Order” and has guest starred on “The Good Wife” and “Royal Pains.” He regularly appeared on talk shows, making more than 100 appearances on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” Currently, he can be seen on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” where he is a show favorite. Klein has also appeared in many notable films including, “Hooper,” “The Owl and the Pussycat,” “Primary Colors,” “People I Know,” “Two Weeks Notice,” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and “The Back-Up Plan” with Jennifer Lopez. Located within Hotel Nikko (222 Mason Street, San Francisco), Feinstein’s at the Nikko presents a wide range of entertainers from stage and screen all within an intimate 140-seat cabaret setting. There is a $20 food and beverage minimum per person inside the showroom which guests can use towards cocktails as well as a variety of small plates crafted exclusively for Feinstein’s at the Nikko, through Restaurant Anzu. Cheese and dessert platters will also be available in the showroom. Guests of Feinstein’s at the Nikko can enjoy a variety of food and beverage options before performances. Kanpai Lounge, located in Hotel Nikko’s lobby, offers light cuisine, a full bar and specialty cocktails. Before Jay Leno, Billy Crystal or Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Klein was delivering the type of observational jokes they’d emulate. As Leno revealed during his final episode of “The Tonight Show,” a poster of Klein was the only thing hanging in his apartment when he struggled as an aspiring comedian in the 1970s. When Klein first began entertaining audiences more than 40 years ago, comedians were a different breed. They wore cuff links and tuxedos. They stood out. Klein was pretty much like everybody else. His jokes weren’t one-liners. He talked about what everyone else was talking about. He made life funny. “My material has always been organic,” he said. “I talk about life... Just like a good novel, if you make good observations, it’s universal.” And at age 72, he’s still making life funny. He’ll take the stage – his favorite place to be – for another one-man show at 8 p.m. April 5 at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake. It’s a show, Klein said, that might surprise people. “After so many years in the business, I’m still a well-kept secret in person,” he said. “I’ve never been a big tour guy . He was reminiscing about visiting Leno’s “bomb site” apartment in Boston when they were up-and-coming comics, and Leno had a poster of Klein above his bed. Robert Klein, the legendary comedian who influenced a generation of comics, is coming to the Raue Center for the Arts on April 5. Although born and raised in The Bronx, Klein got his start at Second City. “I reported for work with Fred Willard in March of ’65 on Wells Street in Chicago,” he said. That led to a career that has included Grammy, Emmy and Tony award nominations, 82 guest appearances on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” plus about 50 appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman.” In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on HBO. He has gone on to do nine one-man shows for HBO. His most recent special, “Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced,” aired in 2010. He co-starred in the NBC series “Sisters,” and had a recurring role on “Law and Order.” Recently, he’s been on “Royal Pains” and “The Good Wife” — he just finished shooting an episode which will air in a couple of weeks. On April 1, he recorded an episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s web series, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” To this day, he favors standup comedy over acting, dancing or even sitting behind a microphone.
