More fun and trivia from behind the scenes at the Tour de FranceBy FrenchVillageDiariesIn his second book looking at life behind the scenes of the Tour de France this is Ned's account of the 2014 Tour that started with much fanfare and hope in Yorkshire, but quickly became a difficult and disappointing tour for Britain and her riders. I really enjoyed his first book How I Won the Yellow Jumper and am happy to say this one didn't disappoint. Every year on the Tour is different with new characters, dramas and amusing anecdotes that Ned (now a seasoned member of the commentary team) shares with the reader. If you are looking for a fun read that takes you back stage, entertains you, but also includes some great facts and trivia about the Tour and it's riders then this is the book for you. A funny and irreverent look behind the scenes at the 2014 Tour de France Join Ned Boulting as he reports on his dozen-th Tour de France, an event in which blokes do amazing things on bikes, and, wersquo;re oft told, the biggest annual sporting event in the world. This account is a chance to relive the 2014 race, stage for stage, fall after fall, tantrum by tantrum; just the good parts, mind you, without all the aerial shots of castles. Or sunflowers. (Though it does wax lyrical about some stunning Alpine scenery . and, with the race starting in Yorkshire, even some stunning scenery not far from Bradford). From Leeds to Paris (how often do you say that?), Ned details the minutiae of his encounters with the likes of Vincenzo Nibali, David Millar, Chris Froome, Chris Boardman (or "Broadman" as some would have it), Marcel Kittel, Mrs. Cavendish (Markrsquo;s wife), Peter Sagan, and the rest. Their endeavors, achievements, humor, and occasional rancor sit alongside his own decade-long quest for the ideal end-of-race T-shirt.     Release date: 3 May 2015 Over a million turn out for first ever Tour de Yorkshire The first ever Tour de Yorkshire has ridden itself into the history books after a momentous three days of racing. One and a half million fans at the roadside and TV audiences in more than 150 countries have witnessed some of Yorkshire’s finest scenery, with crowds at key points in the race comparable with the Tour de France. Initial spectator figures from police and race organisers indicate that on Stage One, 250,000 people watched by the roadside, followed by 450,000 on Stage Two and 750,000 on Stage Three. A fantastically strong field lined up for the first stage of the men’s race in Bridlington on Friday 1 May, among them World Champions and Olympians and 13 of Yorkshire’s finest riders. Sir Bradley Wiggins drew huge crowds with his Team Wiggins team mates, as did Giant-Aplecin’s Marcel Kittel, Team Europcar’s Thomas Voeckler and Yorkshiremen Ed Clancy of JLT Condor and Team Sky’s Ben Swift. Sadly by Stage Two the race had lost two of the main protagonists as Ben Swift and Marcel Kittel were forced to retire but Yorkshire’s towns and villages showed no sign of dimming enthusiasm for the race with crowds growing each day.     For immediate distribution Ride in the tracks of Tour de Yorkshire Stars Thousands are expected to take part in a mass cycle ride along the route of the first ever Tour de Yorkshire. The Tour de Yorkshire Ride will give cyclists the chance to ride the route just hours before the pros race. The Tour de Yorkshire is a new UCI (International Cycling Union) approved international cycle race which will be held for the first time from 1-3 May 2015. It is expected to attract high profile cyclists and top international teams. Three distance options are available for the sportive, with riders able to choose from 50km, 100km or 140km routes. A women-only Cycletta sportive will also take place along the 50km route. Each of the carefully designed routes will feature much of the Tour de Yorkshire route with a number of challenging climbs and spectacular Yorkshire views. Thousands of people are expected to line some parts of the route offering some legendary Yorkshire support, and timings will be available online giving sportive riders the chance to compare their climb times to the pros. The event is being supported by five-time Tour de France winner, Bernard Hinault, who will be giving sportive riders tips. Participants in the sportive will cross the same finish line as the pro riders and a winners’ ceremonies will take place on the Tour de Yorkshire podium. Nick Rusling, chief executive of Human Race, the organisation delivering the event with partners ASO and Welcome to Yorkshire, said; “We have the ability to deliver something unique for thousands of cyclists on 3rd May by combining the aura of the Tour de Yorkshire and Tour de France legacy in combination with the hospitality and stunning roads of Yorkshire.

While the sport has upped its effort to discover and expose drug cheats, many observers believe that some racers are still getting away with the use of various undetected performance enhancing drugs. What often attracts less attention is the case where it appears that clean riders are being unfairly accused. It is important to realize that while rapidly advancing analytical technology has unquestionably improved the precision and accuracy of drug testing, it’s not perfect; there will always be some inherent error in the process. And this means that we may occasionally punish the wrong person. In addition, the ability of modern analytical instruments to detect vanishingly low levels of compounds raises the more fundamental and practical question of relevant threshold levels – at what level should we even be concerned about the presence or absence of a certain chemical? Dr. William Apollo, a cardiologist and former bike racer from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania explores some of these vexing questions and challenges in the article below.) This season: 1 win; 2nd in the Tour de France, 2nd in the Critérium du Dauphiné, 2nd in the Tour of Oman. In 2016, this French climbing specialist continued his impressive rise to the higher echelons of world cycling, proving that he was one of the few men who could give Chris Froome a run for his money, both in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France. Though tired after the Rio Olympics, he’ll be eager for end‐of‐season success in Canada, where he has done well in the past (5th in Montréal in 2014, and 7th last year). Alexis Vuillermoz (FRA): Age 28, turned pro in 2013. Palmarès: 5 wins including Stage 8 of the 2015 Tour de France. This season: 2nd in the GP de Plumelec, 3rd in the French National Championships.     (Cite as: Laws of the Game, ISSN: 2058-7244) Volume 1, Issue 1 Article 11 Let me take a #Selfie: An analysis of how cycling should respond to the increasing threats posed by exuberant spectators M Howes Abstract The nature of road cycling raises a number of specific challenges for organisers, particularly in relation to the close proximity between the riders and spectators during the race. Indeed, in many events, supporters are allowed to mass on the side of the road without any barriers or stewards to stop incidents. However, while this proximity can be highly positive and generates atmosphere and engagement with the sport, it also makes it difficult to ensure the safety of both riders and spectators. This paper will examine this spectator/rider relationship and discuss how reckless behaviour (by both parties) has led to an increased number of incidents, injuries and near-misses. The article will also examine the implications of the recent craze of spectator "selfies" as the riders are coming towards them.
