“Building tomorrow’s leaders through America’s pastime.”

2018 Year in Review — The Year of CARE Dayton and Marianne Moore, the founders of “C” You In The Major Leagues. Reflecting on 2018 and the impact that all of us, TOGETHER, have had on lives in our community, one of our 10 “C” leadership words best describes the year: CARE. Because of your support, your CARE, countless people have been given hope and lessons of character development.

Perhaps the most exciting way your CARE was displayed in 2018 came in August when we launched the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program. Named after our 10 “C” character-based leadership words, this school year we have 10 students – many from underserved areas of Kansas City – and they’re each paired with an adult mentor. The group meets on a weekly basis, receiving educational enhancement, and life and job skills training. One week each month they receive leadership lessons from thought-provoking speakers in our community. And, once a month, they take part in a service project. We feel this will be one of the most impactful and life-altering things we do as a foundation.

In 2018, your support helped feed elementary-aged students through Generosity Feeds, helped cover funeral costs for two families that experienced unexpected deaths, relocated a single mother and her three sons from a bad situation in another state to the Kansas City area, and helped them get a fresh start, and purchased a wheelchair-accessible van for a family that suffered a life-altering accident.

In July we expanded our Wiffle ball fundraiser to include a 28-team tournament at the Urban Youth Academy, renaming it “Crown Town Wiffle Weekend,” allowing adults to feel like kids again. That event, which is scheduled to return July 12 & 13, 2019, raised $120,000!

2018 was an exciting year for the foundation because of YOU. None of this is possible without your CARE for people, particularly children and families in crisis. That’s evident through your support of “C” You In The Major Leagues. For that we can’t thank you enough. In December we were able to purchase a wheelchair-accessible van for the Sprague family, whose son, Nolan, was paralyzed after a diving accident. This is from Nolan’s mom Carmen:

“This van represents freedom to us. I’m not strong enough to lift Nolan into our minivan, so we’d been counting on my husband Kevin to be available anytime we needed to go somewhere. Now Nolan and I can just come and go as we please. It’s awesome! And in the future this is set up so Nolan can drive as well..talk about freedom! He’s chomping at the bit! “C” You In The Major Leagues contacted us a day or two after Nolan’s accident saying they wanted to help us. They worked with United Access to make this happen, and the entire team there is amazing! Wow..just wow is all I can say. Thank you!” “We have been coming to your camp since its first year. This camp has had an immense effect on our son through the years. The core life skills that are taught have a lasting effect. ...In 2018 our son went to both weeks. After the first week he told my wife and me that he could do more, that he could do better. He offered to help us around the house with anything we needed. That’s huge for a 12-year-old boy. This camp has improved his baseball skills, but it’s also helped him in life. Thank you from my wife and me. We are very appreciative of what you do and how you do it.” Christopher, father of a CYITML Baseball Camp participant 2018: The Year of CARE

In August we launched our biggest initiative to date, the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program. Through C-10, which is based on our 10 “C” character-based leadership words, we’ve paired 10 high school students with 10 mentors, and we pour into their lives on a weekly basis. The students are receiving educational enhancements, and job and life skills training. Once a month they hear from a guest speaker and they go into the community for a service project.

One of our students, “Carmen,” summed up the program this way: “The thing I’ve enjoyed most about C-10 is the environment. I feel welcome and I feel constant support.” C-10 Mentoring & Leadership 2018: The Year of CARE

2018 marked the fourth year of the “C” You In The Major Leagues Baseball Camp. As with the previous three years, one session of camp was at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. However, we added a session at the Urban Youth Academy, where the majority of boys and girls came from underserved areas of Kansas City and attended camp for free. and members of the Royals Baseball Operations Department oversee the camps. CYITML Baseball Camps League of Smiles

In 2018 we partnered with Coldwater of Lee’s Summit to the 25th season of League of Smiles, which is a non-competitive, learning T-ball league for ages 4-7 years old. With assistance from the Urban Youth Academy staff and the Royals Baseball Operations department, young players learned basic baseball fundamentals and then received a lesson on one of our “C” words after their game. Our intern Andrew Richards oversaw the program. “C” You At The “K”

For a third year, we brought high school students, largely from underserved areas of Kansas City, to during the season for “C” You at the “K.” On their unique night, students typically watch batting practice on the field, receive a leadership lesson from Dayton Moore and others, enjoy dinner, and then watch a Royals game.

We are grateful to Darol Rodrock and the Darol Rodrock Foundation for partnering with the Royals to underwrite this event! Darol has a powerful message that he shares with the students. 2018: The Year of CARE

The following 58 organizations have received grants from “C” You In The Major Leagues since 2014. Most of the grants to churches have been helping specific individuals or families, and most of the grants outside of Kansas City have been made in honor of a Royals player or making an appearance on behalf of CYITML.

A Story of Hope One way your support makes a huge difference is with individuals and families in crisis in our community. One of those in 2018 was the Johns family. Jason Johns is a pastor in the Kansas City area, and was not taking an income as he and his wife started a new church near the urban core of Kansas City. In August 2017, as he was driving his three children -- two girls and a boy -- to school, a car pulled in front of Jason’s truck near Gregory and Paseo. The impact forced Jason’s truck into a light pole. Five days later, the Johns’ oldest daughter, 8-year-old Elise, died. Meanwhile, 5-year-old Hope was paralyzed from the waist down.

In early 2018, with Hope’s time at the therapy center coming to an end and insurance not covering some of the equipment needed to carry on her rehab at home, a grant from CYITML paid for a specialized rehabilitation bike. That has allowed Hope to continue her physical therapy at home.

The following is a note from Jason Johns:

“We would first of like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have made it possible for us to carry on with quality therapeutic exercises that are essential to Hope having the ability to live her best life! This FES bike is a pivotal part in Hope’s therapy. Its function helps to keep proper circulation and muscle tone in her legs while she continues to heal from the accident. We are overwhelmed with such gratitude! Our insurance would not cover this bike and we had no idea what we were going to do until (CYITML) reach out on your behalf to offer assistance. As her father I cannot thank you enough!” 2018: The Year of CARE

For a second season, CYITML teamed up with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) to recognize “Coaches with Character.” An amateur coach was selected each month, from April through September, who, through their leadership on and off the field, are helping to grow youth sports in the Kansas City area. Blue KC donated $2,000 to CYITML in honor of each coach. The coaches were recognized on the field at Kauffman Stadium before a game in September. 2018 Honorees

CYITML volunteers, including our C-10 group, served 182 hours in the Kansas City community during 2018. THANK YOU to all of our volunteers! 2018: The Year of CARE

After a successful inaugural “Wiffle Ball at the Hollow” fundraiser in 2017, we added a two-night tournament at the Urban Youth Academy, and called the three-day event, “Crown Town Wiffle Weekend.” The tournament, which attracted 28 teams (377 players), plus the Saturday morning “Wiffle Ball at the Hollow” game, netted nearly $120,000! Kansas City Mayor Sly James helped kick off the event on Thursday, and Honorary Commissioner wowed everyone on Saturday with three home runs, including one using three bats with pitcher Jeff Montgomery throwing three balls at once. Other personalities during the three-day event included other Royals Hall of Famers , and , fellow broadcaster Joel Goldberg, former Royals Billy Butler, Jaime Bluma and Al Fitzmorris, and media personalities including Jeffri Chadiha, Bob Fescoe, John Holt, Scott Parks, Dana Wright, and teams from 610 Sports, KSHB, and Fox4. In 2018, “C” You In The Major Leagues was able to come alongside children of incarcerated parents, and inmates. (Left) With a grant to Prison Fellowship via Kansas City radio station Life 88.5, 143 children attended Angel Tree Camp. This is a letter from station Dave Gordon.

Then, in December (right) Dayton Moore shared his character- based leadership message — and put CARE on full display — when he spoke to more than 500 inmates at two Kansas prisons. After each presentation, which included extended Q&A sessions, Dayton talked one-on-one with the inmates who wanted to meet him. During one visit, 1962 World Series MVP Ralph Terry talked with the inmates, also. Messages of Care

A few days after visiting two Kansas prisons in December, Dayton Moore received the following note from the father of one of the inmates:

“I wanted to express my gratitude for the kindness and interest you have shown to my family. There are in this life few blessings greater than discovering that another man has demonstrated fatherly care for one’s own children when there was absolutely no expectation that such a thing should happen. That you took the time to converse with (my wife), to get to know something of my family, to reach out to us, to interact with my son, and to call (my wife) and provide her with such encouragement is something for which I cannot thank you enough.

God constantly provides unimaginable blessings from the most dire circumstances, something of which we have firsthand knowledge, and may The Father of all and giver of all good things continue to bless and sustain your efforts with your family, your ministry, and your team.

Thank you again! Mark L.” 2018: The Year of CARE
