18.331 Local Electoral Area Boundary Committees - Committee 1 Roscommon That the revised local electoral boundary shall ensure that in the case of Roscommon that a local electoral area shall be designed around the urban centre of Roscommon County Town and encompass the surrounding villages and rural hinterland thus taking account of local and community identities and linkages. Please see attached a map showing Roscommon County Town and its radius of linkage. These linkages include shopping, services including doctors and dentists, Garda Station, hospital, local schools, after school activities, sports, Library. At present people in the surrounding areas of Athleague DED, Fuerty, Castlecoote, Kilbegnet and Donamon continue to frequent Roscommon Town for all of the above. However they do not have ease of access to their Municipal District Office. The Roscommon Municipal District is a few minutes drive away however the Athlone Municipal District office is 40 minutes drive away. No other area in the County is so removed from an area office which is ironic considering it is just minutes from the Roscommon Municipal district. The Roscommon MD has an area office in Roscommon and Castlerea. The Boyle MD has an area office in Boyle and Ballaghaderren and Strokestown. And the Athlone MD has one area office in Monksland. The structure is not servicing the people of Athleague, Fuerty, Castlecoote, Rosmoylan and Donamon. The simple solution is to reconnect them electorally with their local town, the County Town, Roscommon. Roscommon Town Team is working very effectively servicing Roscommon Town and surrounding areas however it is not connected to Athleague, Fuerty, Castlecoote, Rosmoylan and Donamon as they are in the Athlone MD and their closest Town Team is in Monksland (40 minutes away). -

Proposed disposal of site adjacent to “Peach Cottage”, Upper Churchtown Road (leading to Sweetmount Park), Churchtown, Dublin 14. Site at the rear of Dundrum Library known as the former HSE Health Centre and Dispensary and the removal of Restrictive Covenants – Select Vestry of Taney Parish Church Background to proposed Disposal of land In August 2012, the County Council completed the purchase of an area of land measuring 1832.23 sq. metres (Site A on attached Map) to the rear of Dundrum Library, Dundrum, Dublin 14. The Council’s interest in the site is contained in Property Registration Authority Folio No. 216620E. The site was purchased from the Health Service Executive with 2 Restrictive Covenants attached as follows :- 1. Not to build any building on the site other than a dispensary and welfare clinic. 2. A covenant that no building shall exceed 25ft in height. The Council has been negotiating for the removal of these Restrictive Covenants with the Representatives of the Select Vestry of Taney Parish Church for some time. The negotiations have resulted in agreement in principle between the parties for the removal of the Restrictive Covenants subject to the following :- The disposal of a site adjacent to “Peach Cottage”, Upper Churchtown Road (leading to Sweetmount Park), Churchtown, Dublin 14 (Site B on attached Map) to the Select Vestry of Taney Parish Church subject to the formal procedures set out in Section 183 of the Local Government Act, 2001 for it’s incorporation into the Graveyard. -

Crannogs — These Small Man-Made Islands
PART I — INTRODUCTION 1. INTRODUCTION Islands attract attention.They sharpen people’s perceptions and create a tension in the landscape. Islands as symbols often create wish-images in the mind, sometimes drawing on the regenerative symbolism of water. This book is not about natural islands, nor is it really about crannogs — these small man-made islands. It is about the people who have used and lived on these crannogs over time.The tradition of island-building seems to have fairly deep roots, perhaps even going back to the Mesolithic, but the traces are not unambiguous.While crannogs in most cases have been understood in utilitarian terms as defended settlements and workshops for the wealthier parts of society, or as fishing platforms, this is not the whole story.I am interested in learning more about them than this.There are many other ways to defend property than to build islands, and there are many easier ways to fish. In this book I would like to explore why island-building made sense to people at different times. I also want to consider how the use of islands affects the way people perceive themselves and their landscape, in line with much contemporary interpretative archaeology,and how people have drawn on the landscape to create and maintain long-term social institutions as well as to bring about change. The book covers a long time-period, from the Mesolithic to the present. However, the geographical scope is narrow. It focuses on the region around Lough Gara in the north-west of Ireland and is built on substantial fieldwork in this area. -

This magazine contains lots of news about our graduates, where they are and what they are doing. It also aims to keep you informed on developments at your university. In October 2006, the university launched the Gateway Project – a major international architecture competition involving the redevelopment of some 10 hectares around the main entrance of the Belfield campus. The project challenged architects to create a defining structural feature for UCD to serve both as an internationally recognisable landmark and also meet extensive functional requirements. It is to comprise academic, cultural, leisure and business facilities and it marks the start of a 15-year Development Plan for a sustainable, healthy and living campus. Against this backdrop, another important episode of UCD history is playing out. Earlsfort Terrace has been sold to the State to facilitate the redevelopment of the National Concert Hall. UCD can now complete the move to Belfield and deliver on the vision set out by Michael Tierney, President of the university in the 1960s. As we say farewell to Earlsfort Terrace, I am reminded of the origins of that building, which for 124 years played such a central role in UCD life. -

Introduction Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths commenced in Ireland in 1864, though registration of marriages of non‐Roman Catholics was introduced earlier in 1845. The Births, marriages and deaths were registered by geographical areas known as Registration Districts (also known as Superintendent Registrar’s Districts). The boundaries of the registration districts followed the boundaries of the Poor Law Unions created earlier under the 1838 Poor Law Act for the administration of relief to the poor.
