The diocese was expanded in 1853 to include all of Washington State, northern Idaho, and Montana west of Helena. It was limited to Washington in 1868, renamed Seattle in 1907, and elevated to an archdiocese in 1951. Statewide Seattle reported 2,900 baptized Native American Catholics in 1900 and in 1999 the Seattle, Spokane, and Yakima dioceses reported 7,800, 3,000, and 1,000 respectively. IV. PARISH APOSTOLATE: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LOCAL CHURCH by John E. Rybolt, C.M. Beginning with the original contract establishing the Community, 17 April 1625, Vincentians have worked in parishes. At fIrst they merely assisted diocesan pastors, but with the foundation at Toul in 1635, the fIrst outside of Paris, they assumed local pastorates. Saint Vincent himself had been the pastor of Clichy-Ia-Garenne near Paris (1612-1625), and briefly (1617) of Buenans and Chatillon les-Dombes in the diocese of Lyons. Later, as superior general, he accepted eight parish foundations for his community. He did so with some misgiving, however, fearing the abandonment of the country poor. A letter of 1653 presents at least part of his outlook: ., .parishes are not our affair. We have very few, as you know, and those that we have have been given to us against our will, or by our founders or by their lordships the bishops, whom we cannot refuse in order not to be on bad terms with them, and perhaps the one in Brial is the last that we will ever accept, because the further along we go, the more we fmd ourselves embarrassed by such matters. l In the same spirit, the early assemblies of the Community insisted that parishes formed an exception to its usual works. The assembly of 1724 states what other Vincentian documents often said: Parishes should not ordinarily be accepted, but they may be accepted on the rare occasions when the superior general .. , [and] his consul tors judge it expedient in the Lord.2 229 Beginnings to 1830 The founding document of the Community's mission in the United States signed by Bishop Louis Dubourg, Fathers Domenico Sicardi and Felix De Andreis, spells out their attitude toward parishes in the new world, an attitude differing in some respects from that of the 1724 assembly. -

The Archconfraternity of the Most Precious Blood By Francesco Bartoloni, cpps I should like to begin by noting that in preparing this presentation I have relied heavily on Michele Colagiovanni’s, Il Padre Segreto, Vita di Monsignore Francesco Albertini, especially chapters 10, 11, 12, and 18, and an article by Mario Dariozzi, cpps, “L’Arciconfraternità del Preziossissimo Sangue in San Nicola in Carcere Tulliano.” (See the end of the article for full references.) The Enciclopedia Cattolica defines a confraternity as an ecclesiastical corporation, composed primarily of the laity, canonically erected and governed by a competent superior, with the aim of promoting the Christian faith by means of special good works directed to divine worship or to charity to one’s neighbor. Often worship and charity are associated aims in the statutes of confraternities. Thus conceived, they are genuine and stable ecclesiastical foundations with their own organization, capable of having their own statutes, etc. According to the Code of Canon Law of 1917, confraternities are not to be confused with: 1. those institutes that have the title of “pious causes” (hospitality, recovery houses, orphanages, etc.) which have a more complex aim; 2. pious unions that exist for a particular occasion, held together by the will of their members, which go out of existence when there are no more members; 3. secular third orders that are closely linked with the religious order from which they derive their name; 4. associations of the arts and of craftsmen which have an aim that is primarily economic, even if they place themselves under the protection of a saint. -

From You we will be reborn each day by the power of the Spirit. We will live the life of Jesus as little servants of our brothers. Teach us, Mary, to bear the life of the Lord. NOTES A he Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, Tcanonically established at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes by the Bishop of Tarbes, December 8, 1872, was made an Archconfraternity by Pope Pius IX and then Pope Leo XIII, first for France and then for the whole world. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, 2015-2016, Most Reve- rend Nicolas Brouwet, Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes, de- sired to make a sign of a greater commitment of all (per- sons, families, communities, shrines, institutions) to the service of the mission entrusted by Mary to Bernadette at Lourdes, so that the Church may show herself ever more as an oasis of mercy, offering wounded bodies and hearts the wellspring of healing and forgiveness. -

LOUIS-MARIE DE MONTFORT’S TRUE DEVOTION TO MARY Name: Seeger, Mary Olivia University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. Elizabeth Groppe The purpose and content of my thesis is to investigate and assess how St. Louis- Marie de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary contributes to a renewal of Marian devotion in the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. My thesis focuses on a close reading of the primary texts of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort (True Devotion to Mary), the Second Vatican Council (Lumen Gentium, the Constitution on the Church), and St. John Paul II (Redemptoris Mater). As part of my theological method, I renewed my Marian consecration and interviewed four other people who currently practice Marian devotion. -

A History of St. Mary's Church : This history is in two parts, the first gives a brief background of St. Mary’s Catholic Church before it became a Catholic Church. The second part is a brief history of the Catholic Church on Whidbey Island and includes the purchase of St. Mary’s Church in 1934 and its subsequent history. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH HISTORY Early in January, 1866, Mrs. Daniel Pearson, accompanied by her teenaged son and daughter, prepared to board the steamship CONTINENTAL in New York Harbor to make the trip around the tip of South America to the Washington Territory. They would be part of the Second Mercer Expedition. The First Mercer Expedition had sailed in 1864. Georgia and Josephine Pearson were members of that first group – they were called the “Mercer Girls”, and they came to teach school. Both sisters had jobs on Whidbey Island. They were chaperoned by their father, who had secured a job as the Lighthouse Keeper on Whidbey Island. He then sent for his wife and two teenagers. Mrs. Pearson and the children sailed on January 17, and they arrived in San Francisco on April 24, 1866. In a few days, they were sailing north on a smaller ship, landing on May 31, at Port Townsend, the port of entry for the Washington Territory at that time. On June 1, they sailed by ferry to Whidbey Island, coming ashore at Ebey’s Landing. As they climbed the bluff to their new home in the lighthouse, Flora Augusta Pearson, age 15, felt she was “one step from heaven.” And so, the Pearson family and other pioneer families settled Central Whidbey Island on “land donations.” Flora Pearson worked with her father as Assistant Lighthouse Keeper for eleven years. -

The United States Conference of Secular Institutes The Mountaineer August 2019 Volume 12, Issue 2 Dear Friends, Heart Speaks to Heart. This is the theme of our coming annual national meeting, obviously inspired by divine providence. Just a few days after our executive committee had chosen this theme, it was announced that Pope Francis had approved the canonization of John Henry Cardinal Newman. The cardinal’s motto was: Cor ad cor loquitor, that is, “heart speaks to heart.” Now the canonization date has been set for just a month after our national meeting; it will take place in Rome on October 13, 2019. One can almost feel the breeze of the Holy Spirit as he swishes by with his wisdom. Such “coincidences” are messages from God that we want to take seriously, so let us meditate a bit on the truth that one heart speaks to another heart. This is a beautiful definition of prayer, that deep connection between God and the human heart, sometimes a unity that needs no words. Once in a while we might be graced by the prayer of just relax- ing in the presence of the loving Father, feeling a bond that expresses the reality that we belong together, Crea- tor and creature, Parent and child, Mercy and misery. The smaller cannot exist without the greater. Our consecrated life can also be described as “heart speaks to heart.” When the Lord Inside this issue: called you to be his very own in a special, exclusive way, that was his heart speaking to your heart. Usually such a calling grows slowly, almost unperceptively, just as love grows between a man and woman called to marriage. -

CHAPTER VII: Parish Stability Assured With Fr. Cardinal After serving ten months as the administrator, Bishop deGoesbriand installed Rev. Herve Cardinal, another Breton , as pastor on October 22, 1857. Fr. Cardinal re- corded his arrival in the Annales. He remained until Au- gust 1871, providing to St. Joseph Parish its first lengthy period of stability. He had been ordained in Quimper, France; he was 46 when he came to Burlington. Fr. E.J. Hamon described him as a "Breton and Healer:' He became known as a healer because he tried to treat sick people and to give them medicine. This kept him very busy. People began to bring him their sick animals as well.
