(From previous column) My initial encounter with Leib in the late 1930's in Johannesburg was at a meeting of what was maximum sense of the term and it was inevitable then known as the Young Mizrachi, a precursor of that he would make his life in Israel at the first Opportunity. 4 CHEERFUL KARMIEL WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE

In 1966. Karmiel (then spelt with a *C'). was a small dot on the map of Israel — a brand new town celebrating its second birthday. We first saw it on a pleasant late evening in November of that year. Its streets seemed wider that any we'd seen in Israel but that may have been because they were pretty well deserted at 11 p.m.! The Town Square gamely concentrated a bright display of electric light power on some newly-laid flower beds and on posters proclaiming an art exhibition. A lone cat, unlike most Israeli cats, sat tame and friendly and didn't take to its paws on our approach. Karmiel looked exactly what it was — a new development town in Israel. Sitting over coffee with a South African family In the salon of their new flat — new paint, new furniture — optimistic "vibes" were clearly felt by all of us and we knew then, intuitively, that this Galilee town had a bright future ahead! Today, we can safely say that we were right, for Karmiel, now aged 14. is well on the way to becoming recog nized as the largest centre in Western Galileo. Bustling Karmiel. (now significantly spelt with a 'K' so as not to cause confusion with fairly near by, famous Carmel) boasts a population explosion. Its present population of 10,000 welcomes some 350 new ollm every year. The new residents come from England and the United States, from South Africa and Rhodesia, from Canada and Australia and ,.South America. North Africa and Russia. Fifty-five per cent of the population are Israeli- born. Perhaps one of the most exciting features about Karmiel is the fact that the average age of KARMIEL NEWS its residents is 38 and there are lots and lots of Making Aliyah a Success children — one sees them everywhere.
