Last week I gave you Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s first six misguided “thirsts.” Below are the remaining six:

7) A desire to impose ourselves on others 8) A desire to be a person “in-the-know”, the center of information Announce the Good News 9) an attachment to a particular person whose attention we crave 10) an attachment to specific objects, possessions, clothing and food of Jesus 11) A desire to organize our time/day according to our sense of comfort 12) An over concern in matters of physical or emotional health

Readings for the Week of February 21, 2021 As we have begun our Lenten season let us look at all the above desires carefully and reflect on them. This way we can grow in Sunday First Sunday of Lent self-knowledge and govern, rather than be governed by our in- Gn 9:8-15; Ps 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 Pt 3:18-22; stincts and feelings. Mk 1:12-15 Lent is a season which many look forward to in our church. Some people truly see it as an opportunity for growth, which it surely is. Monday Feast of the Chair of Peter the Apostle They also see the spiritual benefits which come from the Lenten 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-3a, 4, 5, 6; Mt 16:13-19 practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Others view Lent with Tuesday Saint , Bishop and Martyr dread! It is hard, it is onerous, we have to give up so many things, we can’t eat meat. There is probably not a great deal of “holiness Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-5, 6-7, 16-17, 18-19; growth” with such an attitude. Some practical advice for the Lent Mt 6:7-15 season is in order. First, it is very clear that this Lent (during Wednesday Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; COVID) carries a great deal of urgency. We should look at this as our personal time in the desert. The desert can provide a clarity Lk 11:29-32 of vision, purpose, and determination. When things are simpli- Thursday Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Ps 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, fied, prayer flows easier. Fasting, as a practice of Lent, always has 7c-8; Mt 7:7-12 a goal. It is not necessarily penitential but can signify the joining in prayer with others. Or, it can be with the very clear purpose of Friday Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-7a, 7bc-8; on someone’s behalf. Fasting expresses a generosity Mt 5:20-26 of spirit. The time we have gained with our simplicity can be Saturday Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 turned to the acts of charity which are also called for in Lent. Some practical suggestions would include: Sunday Second Sunday of Lent 1) Attend Stations of the Cross Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; Ps 116: 10, 15, 2) Grow in your faith intellectually 16-17, 18-19; Rom 8:31b-34; Mk 9:2-10 3) Dive into Scripture; read several books of the Bible during Lent 4) Pick a charity; generosity is its own reward 5) Make a commitment to pray daily, and/or attend every Friday morning in the church

Above all, look at these 40 days ahead as a gift. Pray to allow God to guide you wherever you need to go this year. 30 Minutes Before All Masses Liturgical Assignments
