September 2, 2014, Issue 412 CMA Remakes Remotes Calling something “unprecedented” is, in rare instances, actually not hyperbole. And so it is with the new, all-inclusive model being adopted for the annual CMA Radio Remotes, long part of an exclusive audio rights deal held by Clear Channel-owned Premiere Radio Networks and now being brought in-house by CMA. The upshot? “It’s going to create probably the biggest coalition of companies, stations and reach ever assembled – all focused on driving tune-in to a live event on network television,” says Cumulus Co-COO/EVP John Dickey, a member of CMA’s Radio Committee. “It’s going to be huge.” Guardians Of The Galaxy: Reinventing the remotes started roughly a year ago. “We wanted to try to get greater representation from all the radio groups involved,” says Entercom Bryan’s Den: Industry folks gather in Chicago Sunday (8/31) VP/Country Mike Moore, who chairs the committee. “Premiere for Luke Bryan’s That’s My Kind Of Night Tour stop. Pictured (l-r) are Capitol’s Ashley Laws, UMGN’s Shane Allen, WUSN/ has done a wonderful job over the years, but that agreement was Chicago’s Liz Geerling, UMGN’s Katie Dean, WUSN’s Marci coming to an end, so it seemed logical to revisit how we do things Braun, Bryan, WUSN’s Jeff Kapugi and wife Laurie, Capitol’s and discuss how we should proceed going forward. • Issue 421 Old Milwaukee’S Best: WMIL There Aren’T Many Country Radio Stations That Pull Numbers Like Iheartmedia’S WMIL/Milwaukee
November 3, 2014, Issue 421 Old Milwaukee’s Best: WMIL There aren’t many Country radio stations that pull numbers like iHeartMedia’s WMIL/Milwaukee. The August 2014 PPM saw the 30-year heritage station post its best ratings yet when it went 11.9 Persons 6+ with a weekly cume of 510,800. September was almost as good with an 11.6. The closest competition was Journal News/Talk WTMJ-AM with an 8.7. Country Aircheck reached out to 25-year ‘MIL PD Kerry Wolfe to find out what’s in the water in America’s 38th largest radio market. Going Rates: “It’s number one in almost every demo,” says Wolfe. “You have to look real hard to find a place it’s not number one – men, women, young, old.” He’s right. WMIL led the market in September with Persons 18-34 (12.7) and 25-54 (10.6), Wolfe shares. The station’s closest competitor in the 18-34 arena was Entercom Top 40 WXSS (9.2), while Saga Musical Wares: SESAC Nashville names Jerrod Niemann’s Rock WHQG had that distinction 25-54 (7.6). “Drink To That All Night” Song of the Year at last night’s That three-point spread between ‘MIL and its (11/2) Music Awards. Pictured (l-r) are SESAC’s Tim Fink, second-place challengers is fairly common, songwriter Lance Miller, publisher Tim McGraw, Niemann by the way. and SESAC’s Shannan Hatch and John Mullins. • Bio 2018 Charlie Daniels
CHARLIE DANIELS Bio 2018 www.charliedaniels.com www.twitter.com/charliedaniels www.youtube.com/charliedanielsvideos www.facebook.com/charliedanielsband www.instaGram.com/thecharliedanielsband From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 80, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin’ Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing the Youngbloods’ Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards.

In Tune Activity Plans – Volume 18, Issue 6 Cover Story: Chris Stapleton Is Starting Over National Standards: 7-8, 11 Until 2015, Chris Stapleton was known as a songwriter. As those around him finally convinced to begin performing, he appeared in a few venues and finally on a TV awards show, supported by other artists and a band that included his wife. Then came his debut album, and it was so successful that at 37 years old, he vaulted to the top of the country music world. Now, with his fourth album, he’s crossing over to the mainstream and finding worldwide acclaim. Part of the reason is his unique style of “country.” Prepare Have students listen to some of Stapleton’s music, particularly the new song “Cold” which leads the In Tune Listening List for March. Does this sound like a country song? What does it sound like, and why? Key points in the article: • Late in life (for a musical star) a songwriter becomes a performer and recording artist • His music infuses multiple styles • He is a family man who eschews the celebrity lifestyle • He isn’t dependent on the songwriter community in Nashville for material, as he writes his own Begin Review vocabulary words from the article: • ENGINEERING: the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and buildings. • MUSIC ROW: street in Nashville, Tennessee where many record labels, publishing companies and other music industry offices are located. • INFLECTION: the modulation of tone or pitch in the voice.
