“Dear children! I am carrying my Son Jesus to you, for Him to bless you and reveal to you His love, which comes from Heaven. Your heart yearns for peace, of which there is less and less on earth. That is why people are far from God and souls are sick and heading towards spiritual death. I am with you, little children, to lead you on this way of salvation to which God calls you. Image Thank you for having responded to my call. ”

There will be no confessions on Thursday, January 9th Epiphany of the Lord 1/5/20

PRO-LIFE DISCUSSION

Christians around the world celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord on January 6th, twelve days after . The Epiphany is the celebration of the most sacred day on which your Only Begotten Son, eternal with you in your glory, appeared in a human body, truly sharing our flesh. (Roman Canon) In the New Testament the word Epiphany is used to refer to either the Birth of Christ or to His appearance after His resurrection. The Epiphany is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. The feast commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. The Christian feast day also commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, which is seen as His manifestation to the world as the Son of God. The Epiphany is also referred to as the Baptism of Jesus and is also celebrated as , Three Kings' Day or the 12th Day of Christmas.

Religious scholars explain that for many devout Christians, Christmas is a season rather than a day. Devout Christians celebrate Christ‟s entry into life as a “nativity” festival, with the festivities beginning with and concluding with the Epiphany. Some observe a twelve-day festival, known as or the , starting on December 25th and ending on January 5th. Others celebrate the Epiphany as an eight-day feast, known as the of Epiphany, beginning on January 6th and ending on January 13th. In today‟s Catholic Church and according to the Encyclopedia of Catholic Devotions and Practices, "The Epiphany season extends from January 6th to Sunday. Septuagesima Sunday is the name for the ninth Sunday before , the third before and is sometimes applied to the seventy days starting on Septuagesima Sunday and ending on the Saturday after Easter.

Throughout the world there are many practiced traditions of the Epiphany. In Western Christianity, the day commemorates the visit by the Magi to the baby Jesus. In Northern Europe, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, January 6th is celebrated as „Three King‟s Day‟ with children caroling from door to door, dressed up as . The children each carry a paper lantern symbolizing the star, with the tradition being to your open doors and windows, on Epiphany, to let good luck in for the coming year. In Latin America, the day is known as "El Dìa de los Reyes", with children following the tradition of leaving their shoes out the night before, much like stockings are left out on Christmas Eve. The children stuff their shoes with straw or hay for the Kings‟ camels and in return the Kings leave small gifts and sweets for the children. In Brazil, the celebration is called "Dia dos Reis" (The Day of Kings) and commemorates the arrival of the Magi to confirm Jesus as the Son of God. It begins the night of January 5th and continues into the morning of January 6th, which is known as „The Night of Kings‟. In Italy, January 6th honors the legend of La , who was asked to join the Three Kings on their journey. She declined to join them but has been portrayed in popular mythology as an old woman riding a broomstick entering homes through the chimney, much like Santa Kluas. La Befana is believed to visit children on the eve of January 6th, bringing sweets and gifts to well-behaved children and a lump of coal for the naughty ones. In Poland, the Epiphany is celebrated with huge parades welcoming the Wise Men. During the celebration the children are dressed in renaissance wear, carols are sung, and nativity scenes are enacted, confirming the country's Catholic heritage. In the years when Poland was under communist control, the Epiphany had been cancelled altogether. It took an act of Parliament to restore Epiphany as an official non-working national public holiday in Poland. Many countries, including Ireland, celebrate "Little Christmas", on January 6th. The Irish also refer to the day as „Women‟s Christmas‟, a time when men traditionally take over the household duties. In the United Kingdom, tradition is the Yule log is burned for twelve nights following Christmas Eve, and then on January 6th the and other decorations are taken down. These worldwide celebrations of the Epiphany were established in the traditional cultural practices and devotions of the region in which they are located and are connected either by collective belief or geography.

No matter where you are located in the world, take time to pray with reflection during this Christmas Season. And as we all contemplate the New Year with hopeful anticipation make sure what we want is what God wants for us. “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”~ John 8:12. As Jesus told His disciples, „Launch out into the deep…in order to become what God wants you to be.‟ “Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid, nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”~ Joshua 1:9. Our Father in Heaven, we praise and thank You for Your faithfulness that is seeing us into this brand New Year. Amen.
