etropic 10(2011): Creed, Tropical Malady | 131 Tropical Malady: Film & the Question of the Uncanny Human-Animal “The tiger trails you like a shadow/ his spirit is starving and lonesome/I see you are his prey and his companion” – Tropical Malady. Barbara Creed University of Melbourne Abstract The acclaimed Thai film, Tropical Malady (2004), represents the tropics as a surreal place where conscious and unconscious are as inextricably entwined. Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tropical Malady presents two interconnected stories: one a quirky gay love story; the other a strange disconnected narrative about a shape-shifting shaman, a man-beast and a ghostly tiger. This paper will argue that from it beginnings in the silent period, the cinema has created an uncanny zone of tropicality where human and animal merge. rom its beginnings in the early twentieth century the cinema has expressed an F enduring fascination with the tropics as an imaginary space. While many filmmakers have envisaged the tropics as an unspoiled paradise (Bird of Paradise, 1932, 1951; The Moon of Manakoora, 1943; South Pacific, 1958), a view which has its origins in classical times, others have represented the tropics as a deeply uncanny zone where familiar and unfamiliar coalesce. It is as if the heat and intensity of the tropics has liquefied matter until normally incommensurate forms are able to dissolve almost imperceptibly into each other. In this process the boundaries between different systems of thought, ideas and ethics similarly dissipate, creating a space for new and often subversive ideas to flourish. As Driver and Martins state, the meaning of “tropicality” is so elastic a number of discourses have been able to shape it to suit their own purposes. -

Ranging from the films of the silent era to the present day, as well as much-loved TV productions, and modern day phenomenons such Harry Potter and Star Wars, the sale is expected to realise in excess of £500,000. Two superb selections of Audrey Hepburn and James Bond memorabilia lead the sale. The highlight of the Audrey Hepburn section is the sleek black Givenchy dress made for her in the much-loved 1961 classic film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This famous dress was personally donated to the current owners, Monsieur and Madame Lapierre by Hubert de Givenchy, who designed Hepburn’s wardrobe for the film. It has an estimate of £50,000-70,000 and is being auctioned on behalf of the charity City of Joy Aid, which benefits the under-privileged in India. Other Hepburn highlights include an exquisite black Givenchy two-piece cocktail suit from the 1963 film Charade (estimate £8,000-12,000) which is as wearable today as it was then, an original costume design by Edith Head for Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, 1954, (estimate £3,000-5,000) and a selection of original cinema posters, photographs and autograph material associated with the films Hepburn starred in (estimates start at £200). -

TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH SIDNEY LUMET Sidney Lumet’s critically acclaimed 2007 film Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, a dark family comedy and crime drama, was the latest triumph in a remarkable career as a film director that began 50 years earlier with 12 Angry Men and includes such classics as Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network. This tribute evening included remarks by the three stars of Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, Ethan Hawke, Marissa Tomei, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a lively conversation with Lumet about his many collaborations with great actors and his approach to filmmaking. L’adhésion à l’association Ciné Meaux Club est de 10 € pour la saison 2017/2018. Vous pouvez adhérer au guichet du Majestic UGC ou par correspondance en nous faisant parvenir vos coordonnées, une photo d’identité et votre règlement. En retour, nous vous remettrons votre carte d’adhérent, qu’il conviendra de présenter au guichet du cinéma Majestic UGC avant chaque séance. La carte permet d’accéder aux séances programmées par l’association : les séances patrimoniales du mardi ou du jeudi et le flm art et essai hebdomadaire au tarif de 5 €. Certaines séances, à raison d’une fois au moins par mois, sont accompagnées d’une intervention d’un spécialiste du cinéma ou d’un invité. Néanmoins, la programmation comme la présence des intervenants restent sous réserves. Une assemblée générale, moment important de la vie d’une association, est organi- sée chaque année à l’automne.
