Besides my academic friends, Kim and Dan have served as a safety net for many years, helping raise my children when I wasn’t around and nagging me to finish already; Mina and Lillie have loved and supported me since high school and are even willing to listen to me expound ad nauseum on my academic work. CONCLUSION .................................................................................................205 WORKS CITED ...............................................................................................209 8 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a comparative study of ways in which women writers from Latina, Middle-Eastern and Native American backgrounds narrate their identities as a function of the different locations they inhabit, and the manner in which these places inform their subject positions and their everyday lives. Some of the key questions explored concern how these writers deploy spatial stories as a tactic to construct textual spaces within which their identities may be expressed, especially since they are often faced, as immigrants or members of diasporic or ethnic populations, with negotiating the contradictory expectations of multiple locations and cultures; it asks what is at stake in constructing particular narrative spaces of identity within categories such as immigrant, exile, migrant, or hyphenated American.     Resilient Resistance: Understanding the Construction of Positive Ethnocultural Identity in Visible Minority Youth by Elizabeth Shen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Leadership Department of Educational Policy Studies University of Alberta © Elizabeth Shen, 2018 ii Abstract Visible minority youth face racism daily at micro, mezzo and macro-levels and yet there is a gap in academic research that examines how these students can combat racism, as they experience it at the micro-level, in order to develop pride toward their minority culture and race. As such, this dissertation explores how visible minority youth, who are living within a dominant culture environment where all levels of racism exist to encourage their assimilation, are able to express positive ethnocultural identity. In doing so, this dissertation seeks to answer the question of: How do visible minority youth build positive personal ethnocultural identity? with the corresponding question of: How do visible minority students externally express ethnocultural identity? Using case study methodology within two schools in the province of Alberta, visible minority adolescent students were interviewed and data were analyzed to gain insight into the various strategies that junior high school (grades 7, 8 and 9) students use to express their ethnocultural identity. Clybourn St; E-E-Lincoln Memorial Dr;W -Milwaukee River DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION East Town (also known as Juneau Town) is a densely populated neighborhood with a variety of housing styles. There are many 19th century houses in the Tudor, Queen Anne and Italianate styles integrated with multi-unit apartment buildings and newer condos. The neighborhood has some wide boulevards with green space in the medians. The streets generally follow a grid pattern; the exceptions to this are Water Street and Prospect Avenue. Water Street tracks the bend of the river and Prospect Avenue follows the curve of the bluff over Lake Michigan along Juneau Park. The topography is flat except for a hill that slopes down to the river beginning around Jefferson Street. Most of Juneau Park is in East Town. There are two monuments in Juneau Park--one is a statue of Solomon Juneau and the other of Leif Erikson. Cathedral Square is a small park in the center of the neighborhood and hosts numerous events throughout the year (see outings section and neighborhood photos below). HISTORY East Town owes its origins to Solomon Juneau. In the 1830s Juneau platted the village of Milwaukee and settled there. He began selling plots of land in what was becoming known as Juneau Town. He set the location for downtown when he and his wife Josette opened a trading post at today’s Water Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Juneau went on to become the first mayor of Milwaukee in 1846 and the city’s first postmaster.

    . Volume 13, Issue 1 May 2016 ‘There’s More Than One of Everything’: Navigating Fringe’s cofactual multiverse Casey J. McCormick, McGill University, Montréal, Canada Abstract: This article analyzes how viewers of Fringe (FOX 2008-2013) make sense of the series’ complex science fictional storyworld. It argues that Fringe presents multiple iterations of worlds and characters in a way that encourages ‘cofactual’ interpretation: rather than figuring parallel universes and alternate timelines as ontologically hierarchical, the narrative accommodates all versions of reality and invites viewers to participate in shaping the multiverse. The article offers a close reading of Fringe’s complex narrative structure alongside an exploration of how audiences responded to and impacted the series through fannish practices such as vidding and narrative mapping. It concludes that cofactual narration opens up an array of participatory practices that blur the text/paratext distinction and facilitate interactive storyworld building. Keywords: Complex TV, Fandom, Narrative, Paratexts, Counterfactual, Cofactual, Possible Worlds Cofactual Interpretation By the time viewers reach the series finale of Fringe (FOX 2008-2013), they have travelled across two spatially-distinct universes, three versions of the future, and at least four different timelines, with each world-iteration populated by different versions of the show’s central characters. Through its reinvigoration of science fiction tropes, such as time travel, alternate realities, and temporal resets, Fringe asks viewers to re-evaluate typical models of narrative world-building. The series constructs a multiverse comprised of what I deem cofactual diegetic worlds. I use the term ‘cofactual’ in contradistinction to the more common narrative term ‘counterfactual’ as a means of emphasizing the plurality and simultaneity of diegetic worlds in Fringe.
