Newsletter 21 st July 2017 Welcome to the final newsletter of this academic year. We would like to say a fond farewell to our Year 6 pupils as they move onto their secondary schools in September. They have made us so proud throughout the

year including their fantastic Leavers’ Play ‘The Amazing Adventures of Super Stan’. Years 3, 4 and 5 have been working incredibly hard completing their assessments and I look forward to seeing them develop further as they move up through the school.

So many of our children work constantly to be the best that they can be, so it will be very rewarding to see them all having fun on their Golden Day on Monday. I would like to thank all the staff for providing the children with such great learning experiences. They are all very hard-working and dedicated individuals and together they help to make NAJS such a good school.

Thank you also to the Governors for their support and to The Friends for all their fundraising efforts this year.

Finally, thank you to you and your children for entering into a partnership with us and hope you have a lovely summer break.

Amelia Doncom - Heath Emily Cunniam - Seaview Well done everyone and thank you once again for your fantastic support!

Be the best you can be! Year 5 - Walk After postponing our river walk the previous week because it was too hot, Year 5 dodged the showers and completed the walk on Tuesday 27 June. We left school at 9:15am and walked into Royal Victoria Country Park, along the foreshore to Hamble Point and then through Hamble Common to Hamble Quay in time for lunch. We were able to see the mouth of the river and discuss the different uses of the river (as well as fill our pockets with shells!)

Well done to everyone for completing the walk and many thanks to Mrs Kinsella and Mr Hammond for driving us back to school in the mini buses!

Summer Music Concert Miss White would like to extend a huge thank you and well done to all the children and staff involved in the Summer Music Concert on Tuesday 27th June. The concert was a huge success; we enjoyed hearing some excellent musical pieces from woodwind groups, keyboards, upper and lower school choirs, ukulele, recorders and even the staff ! We would also like to thank Mrs Barnett for all her hard work with the peripatetic music lessons this year. It was a pleasure to hear how musically talented our pupils are!

Sophie Gale in Year 4 Sophie recently did the ‘Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids’ and raised an amazing £180 for Cancer Research. She made the decision herself to take part, as she wanted to do something to help others. Sophie’s family is very proud of such a brilliant achievement and we would also like to say congratulations!

Staff Update The end of a school year brings about inevitable changes in staffing and this year is no exception. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our colleagues who are leaving us at the end of this term and would like to wish them all the best for the future. Jason Schneider, Helen Parker, Summah Crompton, Theo Dussek are also moving onto new adventures.

Well done to Beach class for winning the class competition and to everyone that collected vouchers for the school which will help to buy sports equipment for the new term.

Upper School Athletics Team On the 6th June the Upper School Athletics team attended the first of two Cluster Quad Kids Qualifying events at Hamble School. This event requires all team members to compete in four events; 200m, Howler Javelin throw, standing long jump and the 70m sprint. Lower School Gymnastics Team On the 19th January, the Lower School Gymnastics team represented the school as they came 2nd in the Cluster Qualifiers in the Key Steps competition held at Botley School earlier in the year. Bin Bag Bonanza - Year 5 The whole school took part in the Bin Bag Challenge in their house teams in smaller groups. The children designed and made a costume and dressed up a child using 3 bin bags (1 x black, 1x yellow/pink, 1x white). This required an enormous amount of communication and perseverance, which children across the school came together and proved they could do! Year 5 decided who the winners were by organising a catwalk and listening to an explanation of what each outfit entailed.

Dear Students/Parents/Carers, We would like to inform you of our latest assembly which we presented a while ago but we haven’t had the chance to tell you about it yet. It was about ‘be bright, be seen’. We showed the children the difference between being bright and being dark and the benefits of dressing in Hi-Vis clothing. We also informed them about outer clothes and that having a hat and scarf can affect your hearing.

We also informed them about the Grange Road crossing place: all children must be supervised whilst crossing the road and entering the school premises.

Regards, Chloe Smith, Eloise Beesley, Freddie Burnish and Lucy Shazell (Junior Road Safety Officers)

Pupil Voice This section is written by groups of children within our school. This report is from the Year 6 Leavers.

Our school has always given us many opportunities that we are grateful for; many of us have participated in events such as: Rock Challenge, Young Voices, Netley’s Got Talent and Christmas productions. We have also been given many responsibilities like school council, learning ambassadors, librarians and house captains. We’ve all enjoyed the many book days when we have dressed up weirdly, as well as all the past sports days when we have supported our teams and represented our school, as well as losing our voices from too much chanting! We all remember our first day that the teachers kindly supported us through. Many of us were scared, though all of the school helped us adapt to school life. One of our favourite moments at Netley Abbey Junior School has definitely been our time at Fairthorne. It was really fun when we got to go on the slip and slide! Another great time at this school was on golden day when we were all jumping on the bouncy castle! We also have enjoyed our many school fairs, Christmas shops and music concerts. SATs are often thought of as scary but the teachers made it bearable. Overall SATs were fine thanks to our teachers. The after-SATs party was the best part. We had a day of fun and got some pretty ‘fabulicious’ food (especially the sweet stuff and Madiline Phelp’s egg muffins). The teachers at Netley are very supportive and you can definitely trust them. They will sort out any problems you may have. During our time in Year 6, the teachers have been a great support to us through personal friendship issues. If something is wrong we feel like we can tell them. They have given us an amazing experience throughout our Year 6 Leavers’ production. We would like to thank them for all their support and help. We are extremely grateful and couldn’t have done it without their thoughts and help. THANK YOU TEACHERS!

Netley Abbey Junior School has taught us to: • Believe in ourselves • Work well with others • Use growth mindset

Netley Abbey Junior School has also taught us many more things such as: lessons, drama skills, how to help people and resilience. We have enjoyed our time here and will miss it as well as our friends and teachers.

Father’s Day Shop The children had a great time shopping at the Father’s Day shop and we raised £307.56 for the school which is fantastic.

Netley Abbey Infant and Junior School Summer Fayre Our Summer Fayre this year, at the last minute, was merged together with the Infant School and everyone really enjoyed themselves! We had Face Painting, Guess the amount of Sweets in the Cake, Coconut Shy, Ball in a Bucket, Lucky Dip and Stocks...the chance to soak an adult of your choice! Along with some fantastic performances from a local Drama group and Martial Arts club, it was a great success and we raised £206.76 for the school. However, it would never have been possible without the help of our volunteers so a big THANK YOU goes to the following: Lisa & James Phelps, Julia & Nick Spake, Tina & Phil Lamb, Katie Macneil, Lizzy & Neil Peattie, Kim Abbott, Nicola Dewey, Lynda Healey and all the little helpers! Thank you to everyone that supported this joint event.

Sports Day Refreshments We hope you enjoyed this year’s Sports Day; we raised £128.33 for the school so thank you to everyone who came along and purchased refreshments.

Message from Angie Bundy, Chairperson I would like to begin with a big THANK YOU to all of you who have helped with The Friends over this last term, especially the new members who have come onboard and made the events happen and continuing to raise funds for the school. I would also like to say an even bigger THANK YOU to those members who will be leaving us at the end of this term as their children move onto secondary school. Your help, encouragement and support has been invaluable and we hope to continue making FONAJS successful!

All the fundraising which FONAJS do help towards a variety of aspects for the children, from subsidising school trips to buying a new stage, providing NAJS Sports t-shirts to contributions for Theatrical company visits and Rock Challenge. This would not be possible without the help from Mums/Dads/Grandparents etc. volunteering their time to help with all the events that we do.

We would love to see some new members and have some fresh ideas to go into the Autumn term with, so if you could spare any time at all, then please get in touch either via email [email protected] or via our Facebook page and come and join us!

Thank you once again for supporting all the Friends events this year and I hope you have a wonderful summer break!

Many thanks Angie Bundy School Dinner Menu A copy of the latest lunch menu can be found on our website: http://netleyabbey-jun.hants.sch.uk/our_school/letters/whole-school-letters/

CHILDREN WITH LEGUME, SESAME AND NUT ALLERGIES

We have a child with a severe allergy to all legume and sesame products. We still also have a number of children with nut allergies, requiring epipens . As the allergy can be triggered from indirect contact i.e. touching areas where the products have been, we would politely request that the following food items are NOT brought in to school at any time :-

NO foods containing peas, broad beans, lentils, chickpeas, french beans, butter beans, haricot beans, kidney beans, sugar snap peas, pulses, soybeans, soya, nuts and sesame etc. (These are the most common in the legume family, but all legume foods are not permitted). We trust you will support the school to ensure that it is a safe environment for all and thank you in advance for your co-operation.
