Through an analysis of official documentation and multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, this paper aims to introduce the current revitalization of ancient Confucian schools and rites, and the boom in children’s decorum camps and other Confucian-related educational programs on the Korean peninsula. Examining some of the schedules and curriculums, the textbooks studied, modernized rituals, and the agendas of the Ministry of Culture, the Confucian Association, and the New Religious Movement that lead the reforms, I deliberate upon possible reasons for this trend taking place at this particular time, contemplate the attempts to rebrand Confucianism as culture for better marketing, and point out some of the curious tensions and ironies this resurgence entails. -

Siamese-Korean Relations in the Late Fourteenth Century Hung-Guk Cho Abstract This paper does not interpret the contacts between Korea and Siam at the end of the fourteenth century as having developed into diplomatic relations. Rather, it considers the possibility of the Siamese “envoys” who came to Korea as having been not the diplomatic delegates dispatched by the Siamese court, but Ayutthaya- based Chinese merchants who passed themselves off as such, and the possibility that the party of envoys sent to Siam by the Korean government was not given an audience by the Siamese court. Two reasons are suggested to explain why the contacts did not develop into long-lasting commercial or diplomatic relations. Firstly, there was the danger of Japanese pirates on the sea route from Nanyang to Korea; secondly, Chinese merchants in Ayutthaya may not have found any profit in trading with Korea. Introduction In the history of the trade between Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia before modern times, the fourteenth century should be considered as a watershed in the historical development of the various countries of the two regions. About 1294, the kingdom of Majapahit in Java, Indonesia, developed into a maritime empire, with most of insular Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Kalimantan, and the Maluku Islands, under its control, and engaged in active foreign trade. In Siam, the kingdom of Ayutthaya, founded in the mid-fourteenth century, made overseas trade its most important business from its beginning. The Ming Dynasty, founded in China in the same period, confined foreign trade to tributary relations, controlling all Chinese maritime activities. -

Goyette, External Member, Sociology © Copyright 2014 by Byung Kwan Chae All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo- Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans’ expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans’ habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members’ positions. -

Kye∗ What roles did Confucian ideas and ruling mechanisms play in germinating and developing egalitarian thought in Korean history? Was Confucianism a great contribution or a critical obstacle? Or, did it take a neutral stance? Do those two ideologies, Confucianism and egalitarianism, mutually support each other in contemporary Korean society, or are they incompatible with each other? In order to understand the transition of Korean society from traditional to ‘modern’ as continuous rather than discontinuous, these questions are worth discussing not only because Confucian modes of social behavior still remain strong among the Koreans, but also because egalitarianism is one of the universal values for which humanity must continue to march. Since the late nineteenth century when Korea’s vulnerability to imperialist powers became readily apparent, Korean views of Confucianism have broken somewhat into two different sets of evaluation. 18. MILITARY LIFE Seo Tae-Won The Korean peninsula is one of the most militarized regions of the world. Two large armies have been standing off against each other for over fifty years since the two Koreas remain technically at war. South Korea has the sixth largest army in the world, while North Korea has the fourth largest. In both Koreas, all men are required to serve in the military; as of the year 2010, the length of mandatory service in the South is twenty-one months for the army, slightly longer for the navy and the air force. Virtually all young men in South Korea are concerned about their mandatory military service, par- ticularly after they turn nineteen, the first year of their eligibility. Although protecting the country’s borders is considered a sacred duty, they feel a psy- chological burden because of the stresses of military life and a separation from their normal lives. Several methods have emerged to avoid military service; occasionally, a celebrity or other public figure will cause a contro- versy because of the extreme lengths he is willing to go. In South Korea, a man’s duty to the state does not end with his discharge from the military; men must serve in the reserves until they are thirty-five years of age. The military was one of the main groups behind the founding of the Joseon kingdom. All Korean school children are taught the story of Yi Seonggye, the founder of the country. He was a general at the end of the Goryeo era who was sent to fight against Ming China; however, he turned back and overthrew the government to found a new kingdom. -

Christian Spiritual Direction in the Confucian Culture: A Korean Perspective KangHack Lee Korean Protestant churches have grown enormously since the missionaries arrived at the end of the nineteenth century. Today, however, many Korean Protestants feel this growth is problematic. The churches have tended to follow a capitalistic model in development, looking at numbers of parish- ioners, showing competitive attitudes to other churches, and continuously trying to expand their facilities. The churches have also focused on external spiritual practices, such as worship, Bible studies, quiet time, verbal pray- ers, and conferences, which do not always fully meet their deep spiritual thirst or desire to experience an intimate relationship with God. What is lacking is a sense of inner spiritual search and personal development. That is why many Korean Protestant pastors knock on the doors of Catholic retreat centers in Korea, in Europe, and in the United States. From my ex- perience of spiritual direction in the United States, I have come to believe that spiritual direction is a precious spiritual practice that can help Korean Protestants transform their spiritual lives. Kushner Senior Thesis Course No.: EAST 399 Department: East Asian Studies Thesis Advisor: Prof. Hank Glassman Date: February, 2013 Kushner 2 Abstract This thesis examines to what extent Confucianism is still apparent in modern Korea by comparing the 12th century work Family Rituals with the modern Korean drama A Gentleman’s Dignity. Korea has been modernizing rapidly in the past several decades and many scholars are of the opinion that traditional Confucianism and Western modernization are not compatible. Modern life surely presents many Koreans with apparent conflicts between traditional values and modern ones (especially as represented in free-market capitalism with its emphasis on the individual). In this thesis, however, it is argued that, although other factors may at times outweigh the need to act in an ethical fashion, Confucianism is still a major factor shaping modern life in Korea. Aspects of Geert Hofstede’s theories concerning power distance, individualism, and masculinity are used to support the arguments made. Territorial Diplomacy: Seo Hui's Compromise and Demands for the Goryeo Dynasty Jungmin Bae, Jin Young Kim, Do Hyun Choi, Sunyoung Hwang, Andrew Chanho Kim Senior Division Group Performance Process Paper: 477 words The brilliant diplomacy demonstrated by Seo Hui, a civil servant during the Goryeo dynasty, when dealing with the Khitans in 993 C.E. is literally a textbook case of “conflict and compromise”—many Korean history textbooks include the famous story of how Seo Hui averted war with the Khitans and expanded his country’s territory with only his wits. The compromise he engineered in the face of serious conflict is still praised as a solution that effectively solved the problem at hand by accurately assessing the geopolitical situation of that time. Although we knew Seo Hui’s territorial diplomacy would be a good topic for this year’s National History Day, we had significant difficulty finding primary sources to corroborate our performance. We were puzzled at the dearth of original documents dating back to the Goryeo dynasty, as most of us had expected detailed records like The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which were written during the dynasty which succeeded Goryeo. Through research, we learned that the lack of primary documents from the Goryeo era could be attributed to the Japanese Invasions of Korea(1592-1598) during which Goryeo documents were destroyed. However, we were luckily able to gain access to online versions of Goryeosa and Goryeosajeolyo, historical records of Goryeo written during the Joseon dynasty. Although these are secondary sources, they were written before Goryeo records were lost, thus ensuring their accuracy.
