Memoirs of Ruby Partin Long (A Pelham Valley Story) Submitted by Jackie Layne Partin (Ruby Anna Mae Partin Long, born 1916-died 2003, was a daughter of William Harrison “Willie” and Octavia “Tavy” Goodman Partin. She was a sister to Grady Edward Partin, Lottie Partin Bell, Douglas Partin and Roy Partin. I found this little booklet containing her memoirs in one of my notebooks, and upon rereading it, I was assured that there was material in it for sharing. With corrections for clarity, italics to furnish names, added photos for interest and permission from her family, I present the memoirs as she wrote them. Jackie) Ruby Anna Mae Partin Long William Harrison “Willie” Partin and his new bride Octavia “Tavy” Goodman Partin I was born in the old Bell House in Bells Cove, Tennessee, where my mother always said the wind would whistle through the cracks. Our heat was a fireplace where you burned on one side and froze on the other. I was playing out in the yard as a small toddler, and Mama found me turning blue, so she grabbed me up and ran her finger down my throat and dislodged a cocklebur. I was bad about putting things into my mouth. My neighbor told me that she found me with pieces of pretty glass trying to chew it. They wiped my mouth out, and I was none the worse for it. While I was rather young, we moved to Alto where my brother Grady and sister Lottie started to school. I was about four at the time, and I begged to go with them saying, “I am plenty big enough to go to school.” When I was five, they let me start to school, and I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed anything as much all through life as going to school and learning new things, especially arithmetic.

Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978 Travis David Stimeling A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Jocelyn R. Neal, Chair Jon W. Finson David García Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer © 2007 Travis David Stimeling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TRAVIS DAVID STIMELING: “Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978” (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.
