Garry E. Hall as commander of Combined Task Force (CTF) 158 during a ceremony at Naval Support Activity Bahrain Sept. 27. Command of CTF 158 typically rotates among coalition partners Australia, United Kingdom and the United States. CTF 158 is comprised of coalition ships and its primary mission in the Persian Gulf is Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in and around both the Al Basrah and Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminals (ABOT and KAAOT, respectively), in support of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1723. This resolution charges the multinational force with the responsibility and authority to maintain security and stability in Iraqi territorial waters and also supports the Iraqi government's request for security support. Additionally, under the training and leadership of CTF 158, Iraqi marines aboard ABOT and KAAOT train with the coalition in order to eventually assume responsibility for security. “I am honored to have been in command of this task force,” said Hall. “The coalition forces have done an excellent job of providing security to the oil platforms and training the Iraqi forces.” “I am very proud of the coalition forces and my staff in supporting the CTF 158 mission,” said Capt. -

Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties. -

1 THE HON. KEN HANDLEY AO C STJ QC Edited transcript of interview with Juliette Brodsky, 27 July 2017 1. EARLY YEARS Q Ken Handley QC, thank you very much for making the time for the NSW Bar. You have been retired now, since 2012, from the NSW Court of Appeal, and that, I believe, included the maximum possible time as an acting judge. You’ve been described by the-then Chief Justice, Jim Spigelman, as a “lawyer’s lawyer” which is a very considerable degree of praise. And that’s because of your “encyclopaedic knowledge of case law though the common law world”. That’s just a few of your very many achievements. I’d like to start however with a look at your earliest years and where you grew up. I believe your father worked in Fiji and that was the beginning of your long association with Fiji. A It was. Q Tell me a little bit about your father. I believe he was a secretary, is that right, of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company? A No, he was middle management. Q So, how did that come about – how did he come to be working (in Fiji)? A I’m not too sure about the details. He was an asthmatic and Sydney wasn’t very user-friendly for him, so he chose to join the CSR and be posted to Fiji where the tropical climate was better for his asthma. He was there for a quarter of century. Q And you visited there quite frequently too? A I grew up there as a boy until Pearl Harbour. -

The Oakhill Drive volume 32 | july 2015 The Centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign 1915 – 2015 his year, 2015, marks one hundred years since the Gallipoli Campaign in World War I. The spirit of ANZAC has come to mean T many things for so many people over these past 100 Years. Next year, 2016, Oakhill College will celebrate 80 Years of Lasallian education in the Hills Region. During the course of our 80 Year history only one of our Alumni has died in the service of our country – Trooper Jason Brown (Class of 1999). In 2013 Jason was made an Alumni of Distinction (posthumously) in memorial of his life. Many hundreds of our Alumni have served or are still serving in our defence forces. As we pay tribute to all those many Australian men and women who have died in conflicts around the world over the past 100 years we would also like to recognise the achievements and on-going commitment to the service of this country by our Alumni. One such person is Colonel Kahlil Fegan. Kahlil Fegan graduated from Oakhill College in 1988 after commencing at the school eight years earlier in Grade 5. He studied for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Newcastle University prior to graduating from the Royal Military College - Duntroon in 1993, to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has served in a wide variety of roles in Australia, Canada, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. Kahlil is currently serving as the Chief of Staff of the 1st Division/Deployable Joint Forces Headquarters. He is married to Ilona, an Organisational Development Manager and has two daughters, Caitlin and Lauren and a young son Elijah. -

Issue 30, 2021 On morning of 1 July 1945 hundreds of warships and vessels from the United States Navy, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), and the Royal Netherlands Navy lay off the coast of Balikpapan, an oil refining centre on Borneo’s south-east coast. An Australian soldier described the scene: Landing craft are in formation and swing towards the shore. The naval gunfire is gaining momentum, the noise from the guns and bombs exploding is terrific … waves of Liberators [heavy bombers] are pounding the area.1 This offensive to land the veteran 7th Australian Infantry Division at Balikpapan was the last of a series amphibious operations conducted by the Allies to liberate areas of Dutch and British territory on Borneo. It was the largest amphibious operation conducted by Australian forces during the Second World War. Within an hour some 16,500 troops were ashore and pushing inland, along with nearly 1,000 vehicles.2 Ultimately more than 33,000 personnel from the 7th Division and Allied forces were landed in the amphibious assault.3 Balikpapan is often cited as an example of the expertise achieved by Australian forces in amphibious operations during the war.4 It was a remarkable development. -

Marine Parks (Great Sandy) Zoning Plan 2017 to create a new designated area for the wreck of the ex-HMAS Tobruk in the Great Sandy Marine Park to allow for ongoing management of the dive site; and to correct mapping errors in the statutory maps of zones and designated areas for the marine park; 2. State Penalties Enforcement Regulation 2014 to prescribe Penalty Infringement Notice offences for the ex-HMAS Tobruk designated area; 3. Marine Parks (Declaration) Regulation 2006, the Marine Parks (Great Barrier Reef Coast) Zoning Plan 2004 and the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2008 to clarify the intent of the ‘mangrove line’ marine park boundary definitions; 4. Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships. -

Trafalgar Dinner Address by Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN Chief of Navy Australian Defence Force Academy 17 October 2014 Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening. It is a distinct pleasure to dine with you this evening, to mark what will, in just a few days, be the 209th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. There is reason for us being here tonight; a great and significant purpose. Some might think it because the Royal Australian Navy has four serving Vice Admirals for the first time in its history but, however impressive, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it because we can have an enjoyable evening together but, while I am sure we will, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it so I can quiz you on which of the RAN’s serving Vice Admirals is the same height as Lord Nelson – no pressure to get the right answer – but that is not why we are here. Ladies and Gentlemen, the reason we are here tonight is because we are different; different by virtue of our membership of the naval profession of arms. While we are rightly part of a joint force, the Australian Defence Force, and while you attend a tri‐service academy, you are still different from your army and air force peers. The value you will bring to the joint fight is your expertise, your skill, your mastery of warfare at sea – on, over, under and from the sea. Whether you are aircrew, supply, engineer, warfare officer, doctor, dentist or submariner, you are first and foremost a naval officer – it is a unique profession in its benefits and challenges – it is anything but ordinary and it is immensely important to Australia. -

My thanks go to Sir Laurence Street, Peter Marinovic of the Red Cross archives, , The Forbes Society for Legal History, the staff at Willoughby Library who cheerfully tracked down the most obscure books and theses with great patience Introduction Legal history is not simply the accumulation of cases, decisions and statutes. Around this framework swirl the private lives of the solicitors, barristers, judges, clerks and associated professionals who worked in the law. A profession gains part of its character from the private lives and experiences of its early members. Through its professional ancestors the New South Wales legal fraternity is connected to a range of institutions – everything from sporting groups, schools, universities and churches. One significant group has been the military. In World War One all of these eleemnet came togher. Men who had been at the same school, worshipped at teh samechruch, 2 shared the space at the law courts, walked the corridors of chambers, had garden parties overlooking the harbour and caught the same trams and ferries home found themselves next to one another in strange exotic fields when the bullets flew and ordinary soldiers looked to the privileged officers for leadership. While the battles raged, in Australia the mothers, wives an sisters of the soldiers gave countless hours to preparing packages for their menfolk, or organising fundraising, or tracking done details of their fates.
