To all of them, Thanks! v ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION AMMONITE BIOSTRATIGRAPHY, LITHOFACIES VARIATIONS, AND PALEOCEANOGRAPHIC IMPLICATIONS FOR BARREMIAN-APTIAN SEQUENCES OF NORTHEASTERN MEXICO by Ricardo Barragan Florida International University, 2000 Miami, Florida Professor Florentin Maurrasse, Major Professor Two Barremian-Aptian sequences studied in Durango and Nuevo Leon States, northeastern Mexico include three lithic units which have been described as the Cupido Formation of Barremian-early Early Aptian age, its lateral equivalent, the Lower Tamaulipas Formation, and the La Pena Formation extending through the early Albian. The present work improves the existing ammonite Aptian biozonation by considering constraints associated with a discontinuous spatial and temporal record of the different taxa within the La Pena Formation. Four ammonite biozones are established: 1) The Dufrenoyiajustinae Zone for the late Early Aptian, 2) The Burckhardtites nazasensis/Rhytidoplites robertsi Zone for the middle Aptian, 3) The Cheloniceras inconstans Zone for the early Late Aptian, and 4) The Hypacanthoplitescf. leanzae Zone for the late late Aptian. Also, a detailed sedimentological analysis of the sections shed further light on the possible causes that controlled intermittent occurrences of the ammonites in relation to the prevailing paleoceanographic and paleoecologic conditions in northeastern Mexico during the late Barremian-Aptian. vi Microfacies analyses show that the upper part of the Cupido facies are represented by biocalcirudite with rudists, biocalcarenites with oolites and algae, and rich benthonic foraminifera assemblages with ostracods. These facies are related to paleoceanographic conditions of sedimentation within a shallow-marine carbonate platform. Its lateral equivalent, deep-water facies extended to the southeast and it is represented by the Lower Tamaulipas Formation, which includes planktonic foraminifera, ostracods, and mollusk and echinoid fragments. The beginning of deposition of the La Pena Formation in the late Early Aptian is characterized by an increase in terrigenous materials and significant decrease in the abundance of benthic fauna. The La Pena Formation is recognized by an alternation of marls and shale limestones containing ammonites, planktonic foraminifera, ostracods, and radiolaria toward the top. Accumulation of the La Pena continued throughout the end of the Aptian and records changes in conditions of sedimentation and productivity in the water column, which abruptly terminated the carbonate deposition in the Cupido Platform. Results of carbon/carbonate content analyses show that changes from the Cupido to the La Pena facies are also characterized by an increase of organic carbon, which indicate the onset of enhanced dysoxic/anoxic conditions in the lower water column. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER PAGE 1. Results of a strati- graphical study of the uppermost Barremian and the lower Aptian succession in the Trans-Caspian area are presented. The bed-by-bed description of three sections — Keldzhe, Tekedzhik and Utu- ludzha — is given as well as detailed lithologic columns. Five ammonite zones are known in the stud- ied stratigraphic interval — the Turkmeniceras turkmenicum, Deshayesites tuarkyricus, D. weissi, D. deshayesi, and Dufrenoya furcata zones. These zones are correlated with those of Europe. The Bar- remian/Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area should be drawn at the base of the D. tuarkyricus Zone. It corresponds to the layers with the first occurrences of Deshayesites, Prodeshayesites and Para- deshayesites in Europe. It is proposed here to situate the boundary stratotype in the Utuludzha section, where the beds containing zonal representatives of the T. turkmenicum and D. tuarkyricus Zones are almost adjacent. The cephalopod fauna from the marly limestones to marls here indicates Late Valanginian to Early Aptian age. The deposition of the marly limestones and marls of this interval occurred during depositional- ly unstable conditions. The underlying Biancone Formation (Maiolica Formation) is of Early Valanginian, whereas the lowermost Rosso Ammonitico is of Jurassic to Berriasian age. The ammonoid fauna consists of 27 different genera, each represented by 1-2 species. The assemblage at the Puez section is dominated by the Phylloceratina (30%) and the Ammonitina (34%). Phyllopachyceras (17%) and Phylloceras (13%) (both Phylloceratina) are the most frequent components, followed by Lytoceras (12%) (Lytoceratina), and Barremites (10%) and Melchiorites (8%) (both Ammonitina). The cephalopod fauna is purely of Mediterranean origin. Zusammenfassung Unterkreide Ammonoideen (424 Exemplare) der Puez Lokalität in den Dolomiten Süd-Tirols wurden unter- sucht. Die Fauna der mergeligen Kalke und Mergel von Puez zeigen ein Alter von Ober-Valanginium bis Unter-Aptium an. Die mergeligen Kalke und Mergel dieses Abschnitts lagerten sich unter instabiler Bedingungen ab. Die unterlagernde Biancone Formation (Maiolica Formation) zeigt Unter-Valanginium an, wogegen die tiefste Formation des Rosso Ammonitico auf Ober-Jura bis Berriasium hindeutet.

A strati graphical synthesis of the Lower Cretaceous deposits in the area studied is outlined. Schematic sequences of the measured sections at the principal localities, which also exhibit the various levels containing ammonites, are shown. The section on systematic palaeontology comprises a discussion of the subfamily Helicancylinae, and generic and specific descriptions of all taxa represented in the Austral Basin. In addition to the study of the Patagonian material, bibliographical research reveals the necessity of redefining the genera Helicancylus and Hamiticeras in order to clarify the systematics of the subfamily. The following species are identified: Helicancylus patagonicus, Helicancylus bonarellii, Toxo­ ceratoides nagerai, Toxoceratoides cf. biplex, Toxoceratoides? haughtoni, Toxoceratoides? sp., and Tonohamites aequicingulatus. The fauna shows some affinities with that of Zululand and western Europe. A new acrioceratid ammonite, Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov., from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Puez area (Dolomites, northern Italy) is described. Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov. is an intermediate form between D. dissimilis and D. trinodosum. The new species combines the ribbing style of D. dissimilis (bifurcating with intercalating single ribs) with the tuberculation style of D. trinodosum (trituberculation on entire shell). The shallow-helical spire, entirely comprising single ribs intercalated by trituberculated main ribs, is similar to the one of the assumed ancestor Acrioceras, whereas the increasing curvation of the younger forms resembles similar patterns observed in the descendant Toxoc- eratoides. These characters support the hypothesis of a direct evolutionary lineage from Acrioceras via Dissimilites to Toxoceratoides. D. intermedius sp. nov. ranges from the upper Lower Barremian (Moutoniceras moutonianum Zone) to the lower Upper Barremian (Toxancyloceras vandenheckii Zone). The new species allows to better understand the evolu- tion of the genus Dissimilites. The genus appears within the Nicklesia pulchella Zone represented by D. duboise, which most likely evolved into D. dissimilis. In the Kotetishvilia compressissima Zone, two morphological forms developed: smaller forms very similar to Acrioceras and forms with very long shaft and juvenile spire like in D. intermedius sp. nov. They are the opercula with which the ammonites closed up the aperture of the conch after the animal had withdrawn into the body chamber. So far as I know there has been only one occurrence noted of an Aptychus in American Mesozoic formations. Castillo and Aguilera described Aptychus mexicanus from the Jurassic rocks of Sierra de Catorce, San Luis Potosi, Mexico,' and this seems to have been a sporadic occurrence. But in Cuba there is a definite horizon which has been traced for several miles and at which nothing but aptychi and an occasional small Haploceras are found. The rocks consist of alternating shales and limestones with the former predominating. They are dark gray but weather light brown or almost white and show a considerable amount of iron stain. The aptychi occur on the surfaces of the shale and are well preserved, although very fragile on account of the iron impregnation.
