Women’s Newsletter February 2008 Welcome to the first edition of the Football NSW Women’s Newsletter for 2008. The e-news service is distributed to any person who has subscribed to the news- letter through the women’s page of the Football NSW website. The aim of this Newsletter is to provide comprehensive information on the growing game of women’s football. Inside this issue: Australian Representatives Win Awards At The NSW Institute Of Sport 2007 Awards Australians Win 1 Matildas captain Cheryl Salisbury and Young Matildas / Matildas representative Awards Ellyse Perry collected major awards at the NSW Institute of Sport 2007 Awards held in Sydney. U17 Future Stars 2 Tournament Cheryl was awarded Team Athlete of the Year for her efforts in leading the Qantas Matildas to the quarter final in September’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Women’s 3 China. The Matildas were also rewarded with an all-time highest FIFA world A-League ranking of 12. FNSW Pathway 4 Ellyse had a remarkable 2007 debuting for the Matildas in August, appearing Program for the Young Matildas in their Asian qualifying campaign in October and having made her first appearance for the Australian women’s cricket team earlier in the U12 & U14 Girls 4 year. Europe Tour Ellyse was also nominated along with Matildas striker Sarah Walsh for the FNSW Tours for 5 Team Athlete of the Year award, while Cheryl was also a finalist in the category 2008 of Female Athlete of the Year and Kate Gill was nominated for the Academic Excellence Award. State Team 6 Camps Other Australian representatives have also been rewarded for efforts in 2007. Matildas striker Lisa De Vanna became the first footballer to claim the WA NSW Indigenous 7 Sportswoman of the Year Award, with team-mate Collette McCallum also nomi- Gecko’s nated. Kick It Kids 8 Australian FIFA Women’s World Cup final referee Tammy Ogston was also School Program recognised for a great 2007 and was awarded the Officiator of the Year Award at the Queensland Sports Federation Awards. Arrive alive High 9 School Program Matildas coach Tom Sermanni was named AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Coach of the Year at the AFC Women’s Awards held on the 7th November 2007. Women’s Newsletter February 2008 U17 Future Stars Tournament The Australian under 17 Women’s team competed in the Future Stars tournament held in New Zealand from Tuesday 29th January to Saturday 2nd February 2008. The tournament was a warm up for the FIFA under 17 Women’s World Cup which will be hosted by New Zealand from October 28 to November 16 2008. The Australian side had a lot to prove due to the fact that Australia were unsuccessful Inside this issue: this issue: in qualifying for the FIFA under 17 Women’s World Cup. Australia’s finest female footballers were on show with each squad primarily based on players currently in State Institute programs. Three additional Australian World Cup stars from other cities also participated in the challenge. Women’s Newsletter February 2008 Football NSW Pathway Programs Football NSW (FNSW) pathway programs define the development steps necessary for players aged 7-17 years. Football NSW have specialised programs for the formative years in the four (4) key development stages. These include the Grass Roots Development Program, Junior Development Inside this issue: this issue: Program, Youth Development Program and the Senior Development Program. Successful players then graduate to the National Pathway through programs such as NSWIS, AIS, A-League Clubs and National representation in the U/17, U/20, Olympics and Soceroos/Matildas. The squads toured Germany, Denmark, Holland and Sweden from 30th October to 12th November. Kick It Kids 8 School Program The tour consisted of four games against local representative teams, two training sessions with the Danish National Under 14’s coach and his assistant, a stadium Arrive alive High 9 tour of PSV Eindhoven, a tour of a Clog making factory in Holland and tours of School Program both Prince Frederik Castle and Prince Frederik and Princess Mary’s residence as well as a number of sightseeing and shopping tours at various major cities in those countries. The Squads performed fantastically, both returning undefeated with the under 14’s also returning without conceding a goal. Congratulations girls! Full report will be on Football NSW website soon . Women’s Newsletter February 2008 Football NSW Development Tours 2008. An exciting opportunity exists for elite football players to join the High Performance Unit of Football NSW on their annual development tours for 2008. Selection into the tour for both boys and girls aged 8-13 years is through the Inside this issue: this issue: FNSW “TOP GUN” camp. The Top 16 players identified at FNSW “TOP GUN” camp held in April will be given the first opportunity to join our elite coaches on a development tour that will be a trip of a life time. For selection into the 14/15/16 boy’s tour is through invitation trials held in March 2008. InsideAustralians Story Win 21 Awards To obtain an enrolment form for the “TOP GUN” camp, contact FNSW or download the form from www.footballnsw.com.au. The “TOP GUN” camp is open InsideU17 Future Story Stars 2 Tournament to all players throughout Australia, and with a set number of players allocated to attend, places are limited.
