Stromberg — First Class Scientist, Second Class Citizen Foreword This book tells the story of the life of Armin G. Stromberg, a significant and influential chemist whose scientific work was carried out in the Siberian cities of Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinbrg) and Tomsk. He was born before the Russian revolution and died after the collapse of the USSR. He experienced the GULAG, contributed to the Soviet atomic bomb project, and founded an academic school of electroanalytical chemistry of high impact, especially within the USSR. The idea of this book derives from a visit by two of us (RGC and GGW) to Tomsk in September 2006 where we met many of Stromberg’s former students, and in particular our future co-authors ASK and EAZ. We were impressed by the tangible legacy that Stromberg had left upon our fellow chemists and friends at Tomsk Polytechnic University, and fasci- nated to learn that some documents still survived from his internment in the GULAG. The book was realized and flourished because of the support of the Research Centre of St John’s College, Oxford and the enthusiasm and interest of its Director, Professor Linda McDowell, which enabled the development of the project to the point where Imperial College Press/World Scientific were persuaded to publish this book. We also thank an anonymous referee of our proposal who asserted that ‘you do not need to be a professional historian to write an excellent history book’! We hope (s)he is correct; four of the five authors (but not MJS) are chemists and include the daughter of Armin Stromberg (EAZ). RGC & GGW June 2010 v b1103_FM.qxd 3/1/2011 4:36 PM Page vi A. G. • Russian Tanker Sails Through Arctic Without Icebreaker for First Time
Russian tanker sails through Arctic without icebreaker for first time Climate change has thawed Arctic enough for $300m gas tanker to travel at record speed through northern sea route The Christophe de Margerie carried a cargo of liquefied natural gas from Hammerfest in Norway to Boryeong in South Korea in 22 days. @patrick_barkham Thursday 24 August 2017 16.51 BST First published on Thursday 24 August 2017 16.12 BST A Russian tanker has travelled through the northern sea route in record speed and without an icebreaker escort for the first time, highlighting how climate change is opening up the high Arctic. The $300m Christophe de Margerie carried a cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Hammerfest in Norway to Boryeong in South Korea in 19 days, about 30% quicker than the conventional southern shipping route through the Suez Canal. The tanker was built to take advantage of the diminishing Arctic sea ice and deliver gas from a new $27m facility on the Yamal Peninsula, the biggest Arctic LNG project so far which has been championed by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. On its maiden voyage, the innovative tanker used its integral icebreaker to cross ice fields 1.2m thick, passing along the northern sea section of the route in the Russian Arctic in a record six-and-a-half days. “It’s very quick, particularly as there was no icebreaker escort which previously there had been in journeys,” said Bill Spears, spokesperson for Sovcomflot, the shipping company which owns the tanker. “It’s very exciting that a ship can go along this route all year round.” A Russian tanker has carried a cargo from Hammerfest in Norway to Boryeong in South Korea in 22 days, about 30% quicker than the conventional southern shipping route through the Suez Canal Environmentalists have expressed concern over the risks of increased ship traffic in the pristine Arctic but Sovcomflot stressed the tanker’s green credentials.

Seoul 3000: A Taxi Ride in Seoul Grouppodcast ASBE I Actors Christine Christine van Rossum Johanna Johanna Köhler Rilana Rilana Karlguth Taxi driver Christian Tewes Narrator Friedrich Scheel (as a guest) Introduction Narrator: Someone who is in an unfamiliar city and wants to arrive at a destination quickly normally goes by taxi. But in a metropolitan area like Seoul you should not do so without preparation. Just a few taxi drivers speak English fluently and in Seoul neither street names nor house numbers do exist. Therefore, it is important to know public places, famous buildings, large hotels or underground stations close to your desired destination to give some instructions. During the 2002 Soccer World Cup even a special translation service was introduced that made it possible to call an interpreter free of charge if communication is impossible. How the Germans and Germany as the host country of many famous writers is perceived in Korea is presented in the following spectacle in five acts and is well-grounded in fact and the knowledge about Korea the group has gained so far. To get detailed information Koreans who lived or still live in Germany for a while were interviewed. Moreover, the situations described by the taxi driver are based on real life stories. Storyline Narrator: After a wonderful week in Doha Christine, Johanna and Rilana arrive suntanned at Seoul International Airport. Christian, however, is not with them as he found the love of his life in Doha and decided to stay with her. To get to their accommodation at EWHA Womans University they hail a taxi and greet the friendly driver.

sensors Article Driving Behaviour Analysis Using Machine and Deep Learning Methods for Continuous Streams of Vehicular Data Nikolaos Peppes , Theodoros Alexakis , Evgenia Adamopoulou and Konstantinos Demestichas * Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, Zografou, 15773 Athens, Greece; [email protected] (N.P.); [email protected] (T.A.); [email protected] (E.A.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: In the last few decades, vehicles are equipped with a plethora of sensors which can provide useful measurements and diagnostics for both the vehicle’s condition as well as the driver’s behaviour. Furthermore, the rapid increase for transportation needs of people and goods together with the evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) push the transportation domain towards a new more intelligent and efficient era. The reduction of CO2 emissions and the minimization of the environmental footprint is, undeniably, of utmost importance for the protection of the environment. In this light, it is widely acceptable that the driving behaviour is directly associated with the vehicle’s fuel consumption and gas emissions. Thus, given the fact that, nowadays, vehicles are equipped with sensors that can collect a variety of data, such as speed, acceleration, fuel consumption, direction, etc. is more feasible than ever to put forward solutions which aim not only to monitor but also improve the drivers’ behaviour from an environmental point of view. The approach presented in this paper describes a holistic integrated platform which combines well-known machine and deep learning algorithms together with open-source-based tools in order to gather, store, process, Citation: Peppes, N.; Alexakis, T.; analyze and correlate different data flows originating from vehicles.
