Ponderings

One headline read, “Millennial Generation has a Blessed” ---this was a reference to the Beatification of , a fifteen-year-old Italian young man who was beatified in Assisi on October 10th. This young computer whiz, when he was diagnosed with leukemia, said he would offer his suffering for the Pope and the Church.

On October 17th at St. Bernard’s, we celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation with a group of young peo- ple who are just about the same age as Blessed Carlo. Our young people, too, are called to be saints! They are called to live their faith in a vibrant way-----and perhaps this new “Millennial Blessed” can help them, and indeed all of us to grow closer to Jesus.

Blessed Carlo loved the Eucharist. In his homily at the Beatification, Cardinal Agostino Vallini said, “Since he was a child…. he had his gaze turned to Jesus. Love for the Eucharist was the foundation that kept alive his relationship with God. He often said, ‘The Eucharist is my highway to heaven.’” In addition to his love for the Eucharist he did small acts of kindness. For example, it is said he would come to the de- fense of classmates who were bullied, especially those with special needs. He used his first savings to buy a sleeping bag for a homeless man he often saw on the way to Mass. When he took the dogs out for a walk, he always picked up whatever garbage he came across.

In so many ways he was an average, normal teenager----he loved playing soccer, playing video games and he had a sweet tooth. His mother said he was a natural jokester---his classmates would burst into laughter at his remarks and so would his teachers.

At the age of 11 Carlo began to investigate the Eucharistic miracles that have occurred in history. He used his computer knowledge and talents to create a website that traced that history. His love for the Eucharist had an impact on his mother who says she had only gone to Mass a few times, but was so moved by her son’s devotion that she returned to the practice of the faith and enrolled in a theology course so she could answer her young son’s questions.

During the Beatification Mass, Acutis’ parents processed behind a relic of their son’s heart, which was placed near the altar. His body was exhumed for veneration at his Beatification in Assisi----placed in a glass sarcophagus----he is dressed in jeans and sneakers.

To be declared “Blessed” a miracle has to be attributed to a person. A special investigation was conducted into a miracle that occurred in the healing of a young boy in Brazil through the intercession of then Vener- able Carlo Acutis. declared that Carlo Acutis’ feast will take place each year on October 12, the anniversary of his death in Milan in 2006.

Blessed Carlo, pray for us! Inspire our newly confirmed, and all of us to grow in love of the Eucharist and to grow in charity in service to our brothers and sisters.
