A title Birkenhead club members have won a few times re- cently, Adele Ineson and Merv Garred, Daymon Pierson and Browns Bay’s Christine Dalzel, Tony Grantham and Trish Croot. Coming through day one with three wins to top section four (18-5, 13-10 & 14-13) and into post section Sunday were father and daughter combination Peter and Milika Nathan. With the ever unas- suming Evan Thomas the only other Birkenhead mem- ber to proceed to post sec- tion, playing with Orewa's Tira Campbell, they topped section seven with two wins and a draw. Beating on count back Birkenhead’s Gary Wal- lace and Adele Ineson who also had 2 wins and a draw. The quarter finals Sunday saw the Nathans up against Orewa’s Elaine McClintock and David Eades, who had beaten Tony Gratham and Lauranne Croot first up in section play the previous day. While Thomas and Campbell had to contend with Browns Bay’s Adam Hayward and Birkenhead’s Peter Nathan and Milika Nathan, BNH 2-4-2 Mixed Orewa’s recent reselected Pairs Champions Photo supplied: T.Croot Blackjack Wendy Jensen. Unfortunately Hayward and Jensen got the better of Thomas and Campbell (18-9) ending Thomas and Campbell’s run.

It was just a two page publication listing the upcoming week’s play on the greens at Birkenhead, a couple of short information like articles and a rundown on one of the Club’s sponsors. The very first article was written by Carole Fredrick “Match Com- mittee Matters” outlining the requirements and obligations of singles and marking, de- faulters and requested a member for the match committee as Colin Spence had re- signed. The first edition the Battle of the Bridge, between Auckland Bowls and Bowls North Harbour, got a mention as it was played on the greens at Birkenhead and featured a number of Birkenhead members. Jo Utting won the Club Membership draw the previ- ous Friday, picking up a cool $100. Friday nights back then came with free nibbles around 6pm, the Joker 500 didn’t exist then. Today’s 200th edition goes out to over 350 individuals, is posted on the Club’s website and facebook page. It is read throughout New Zealand and offshore in Australia, Samoa, Wales, England, it reaches into many clubs, offices and into Bowls New Zea- land’s national office itself, with New Zealand CEO Mark Cameron saying he enjoys the regular Wednesday read.

    CO-OP FUNERALCARE TEST MATCHES 2016 MEN'S TEST MATCH - SCOTLAND bt ENGLAND 6-5 at New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club 20/21 October, 2016 DAY TWO - FRIDAY, 21 OCTOBER SCOTLAND WIN THE DAVID BRYANT TROPHY BUT ENGLAND MAKE THE SCORE RESPECTABLE Rob Paxton (bowling) and Stewart Anderson got the ball rolling with a fascinating singles clash Scotland had England on the back foot from the start of this Test Match. Winning both triples encounters got the Scots off to a dream start on Thursday morning, and when Paul Foster and Alex Marshall beat Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney on a tiebreak in the first pairs clash, the writing was on the wall. However, two gritty pairs wins for England on Thursday afternoon meant that the host country players were hanging on by their fingertips - but they were certainly in with a chance on Day Two - Singles Day. Put simply, the Scots needed to win three out of six singles matches to take the David Bryant Trophy, while England had to pick up four wins. Consecutive wins for Stewart Anderson, Alex Marshall and Ronnie Duncan saw Scotland home with three matches still to play, so the large crowd at the New Earswick indoor bowls club in York settled down to watch three attractive exhibition matches. The pressure was off, but there was still some brilliant entertainment on display from some of the most talented bowlers in the world. Three consecutive wins for Mark Dawes, Jamie Walker and Mervyn King brought England to within one point of the winners at 6-5.

    Annual Report 2016 “Scotland’s local sport of choice; successful, modern and accessible to all.” 1 Chairman’s Report Our Strategy is built on a vision of making bowls Scotland’s local sport of choice: one that is successful, modern and accessible to all. This will be my fourth and final report as Bowls Scotland Chairman. After four enjoyable years as Chair, I now feel it is time for someone else to drive the organisation forward towards our vision. With an ambitious strategy in place, Bowls Scotland has experienced many changes and improvements as we recognised the need to become a modern, successful and well- managed sporting organisation. We will continue to adapt to the changing sporting environment, ensuring that we not only meet the needs of our current membership but develop our sport to welcome new members. We have seen a smaller decline in our membership this year than in recent years and with the many changes and improvements we have even been praised by external reviews for our work in this area. Our strategy which we outlined a year ago is working and we are delivering against the four cornerstones of our mission statement: 1. To enable clubs to develop, strengthen and grow: Our Development team have had significant success over the past year in supporting our clubs in becoming sustainable for the future. The Try Bowls campaign continues to be a huge success since its launch in 2014 with over a quarter of our clubs now participating and actively running recruitment events. Clubs have also received support through our Coach and Volunteer Education system with 561 individuals having completed the Introduction to Bowls Coaching Award (IBCA) and many volunteers attended another successful Greens Maintenance Seminar Series.

    AT THE HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY ACTIVE | MODERN | ACCESSIBLE TO ALL ANNUAL REPORT 2019 CHAIR’S REPORT As we celebrate another successful season, at individual, club, national and international level we are looking forward to implementing our new four-year strategy. I’m particularly excited about the main theme running through our strategy - of Empowering Women in Bowls. With that in mind, I’m delighted to welcome Arlene Ewing to the board. Arlene was an international swimmer and competed at all levels throughout a long and illustrious career and has vast experience of what it means to be a woman competing at all levels of a sport. We are looking forward to investigating ways of attracting more women into the sport. I would also like to welcome James Laws to the board. James has come on as Commercial Director with a brief to investigate opportunities for us to attract sponsorship and commercial partnerships. Craig McArthur and Scott Meechan have both stepped down from the board this year due to their increasing business commitments. We continue to have a skill-based board who are passionate about driving our sport forward and putting in place everything needed to allow this to happen. Declining membership is the key issue for our sport. However, it is not just Bowls Scotland that has this as an issue, in a large number of bowls countries and in a large number of Scottish sports the challenge is to get people more active, playing and enjoying a healthy lifestyle. There are bowls clubs that are bucking the trend by increasing membership and diversifying, and I would encourage all clubs to contact the development team to see what we can do to assist.
