Scape the Nature Catalogue 2016 Catalogue 2016 © Lee Nuttall „That‘s how you create natural and low-maintenance aquarium habitats!“ Scape the nature www.backtonature.se Quality down to the most minute detail Back to Nature are the inventors of the aquarium background. That is why we take the liberty of calling ourselves “Back to Nature − The Original”. Back to Nature is the world‘s leading manufacturer of aquarium backg- rounds. They are all designed and manufactured in our factory in Sweden. All Back to Nature backgrounds are made by hand and based origi- nals taken from nature – an extremely complex process, whose secret we have kept to ourselves for years. The result is extremely naturalistic backgrounds with varying colours – no two products are exactly alike. In doing so we have continued an existing trend. Back to Nature backg- rounds are not only impressive in their appearance. Our products also encourage the creation of unique, individual aquarium designs. All pro- ducts can be easily cut and altered – and backgrounds or modules combined with each other. This al- lows you to shape a landscape exactly according to your individual preferences and requirements. Are Back to Nature backgrounds only suitable for aquariums? Our backgrounds are not harmful to any plants or animals whatsoever – and are just as suitable for fountains, terrariums and vivariums etc. Release your creativity! Aquarium-compatible materials The materials in Back to Nature backgrounds consist among other things of a polyurethane mixture that has been tested for many years. The backg- rounds do not give off any chemical substances that could be any way harm- ful to fish, plants or other living organisms, neither do they influence the chemical composition of the water. Back to Nature backgrounds can the- refore be used in all types of aquarium, both freshwater and saltwater. Hardened, durable surface Due to our special manufacturing process, the surfaces of Back to Na- ture backgrounds are extremely robust. You need to have no qualms about using quite vigorous cleaning methods, and the risk of damage to the back- ground from algae-eating catfish is minimal. Beneath the hardened sur- face the material is more porous in order to preserve the shape well. Unique colouring Back to Nature backgrounds are coloured by a unique process by which the colour can never flake off. The colour is fused with the background materi- al in a chemical reaction, which is why the surface layer remains intact, even after years of use and cleaning. And even better – the colours retain their brilliance. The hardened surface and unique colouring process mean that the backgrounds tolerate standard dosages of common aquarium fish medi- cations (e.g. those containing methylene blue and/or malachite green). Ageing with dignity Back to Nature has been on the market since 1994 – but Sune and Charlie had alrea- dy carried out experiments and tests for many years beforehand in order to present the perfect aquarium background. The test phase had already been completed by the time of the presentation in 1994, by which time all the weak points had been identified and rectified. What was presented to the market was a perfected product. 2 www.backtonature.se Questions to Back to Nature What is a Back to Nature background? Back to Nature backgrounds are deceptively realistic three-dimensional landscapes that can be used in aquariums and terrariums. They can partially or completely cover the rear glass wall and transform the aquarium into an exciting, lifelike environment in which the animals can thrive. Back to Nature backgrounds (BTNs) not only look good, they also have practical uses: Most animals feel more secure and can orientate ? themselves better. In fact, some species do not even display their natural behaviour in „empty“ aquariums. Another clear advantage is that all the technical equipment can be installed out of site behind the Back to Nature. The ideal solution is to install a lar- ge biological filter behind the Back to Nature that is effective for several years without having to be cleaned. Doesn‘t the 3D-background take up too much space in the aquarium? On average, a 3D-background takes up a depth of 5–15 cm in the aquarium. For that reason we always re- commend an aquarium with a minimum depth of 40 cm. The deeper the aquarium, the more attractive the 3D-effect. The 200 cm-long XL Amazonas background should only be used in aquariums with a minimum depth of 70–80 cm. The Malawi background is very flat and requires only a minimum depth. On the other hand, real stones and roots also take up a lot of space in the aquarium. However, a 3D-background displaces considerably less water than stones for example. Use the area behind the background as a large biofilter. Does the water behind the background have to circulate? Yes, the water has to circulate behind the background to prevent any sources of decom- position forming. Use the free space behind the background for the filter and/or in- stall other visually intrusive components such as flow pumps, heaters, pipes etc. How long does a background last? The oldest backgrounds have been under water for 25 years and are still in perfect condi- tion. The unique manufacturing process makes Back to Nature products extremely robust and colourfast. For this reason our aquarium products come with a 10-year guarantee. My aquarium is taller than the background – what can I do? If the aquarium is taller than the background, filter foam or a rigid foam board can be built in un- derneath the background up to a maximum height of 10 cm. These can then be covered with subst- rate and will no longer be visible. The 3D-backgrounds must be fixed in the middle to a glass strip or rigid foam board on to the glass bottom of the aquarium. The rest of the area should be with filter foam bonded to the bottom and rear wall of the aquarium. Excess foam is cut away along the length of the background. Finally, cover the foam with silicone aquarium sealant and then cover over with aquarium gravel or coarse sand. Make sure you are wearing disposable gloves when you do this. How do you keep a BTN clean? © Oliver Knott © Oliver Knott © Oliver Knott © Oliver Knott Put algae-eating fish and snails in the aquarium. The animals graze on the surfaces and keep them clean the natural way. However, if the background does become soiled or covered with algae, simply brush it off with a washing-up brush. The backgrounds are rugged and will not be damaged by it. www.backtonature.se 3 Amazonas Aquarium background for Amazonian aquariums The Amazon in the north of South America is the habitat of numerous aquarium fish, from cichlids to glutto- nous catfish down to the tiny tetras that live in shoals. There are many different biotopes in the Amazon and often driftwood or tree roots form an essential part of the natural environment of these fish. With Back to Nature 3D-backgrounds it is possible to highly naturalistic biotope aquariums. The handmade backgrounds are manufactured with natural materials and are extremely durable and colourfast – in other words an original. Back to Nature backgrounds are characterised by their very detailed and natural forms with recesses, projections and reef structures. These textures are particularly impressive under LED lighting. MODULE 15: How to care for fish Keeping fish is a satisfying hobby and watching fish swimming in a tank is said to reduce stress. In this module we cover the basics of caring for fish, the difference between tropical, cold water, and marine fish, plus troubleshoot some of the common health problems. 15.1 How to care for fish 15.2 Tropical fish 15.3 Coldwater fish 15.4Marine fish 15.1 How to care for fish First, let's take an overview of fish keeping. As a keeper you are responsible for the tank of water that is the fishes' life support system - get this wrong and quickly you finned-friends become distressed and die. Fish fall into one of three groups: tropical fish, cold water fish, and marine fish. Later is this module we look at the specific needs each group. In this section we now take an overview of the maintenance and care of fish, which is largely the same for each group unless otherwise stated. In addition, if you are a novice but think fish-keeping is for your, these are also a section on "cycling" a brand-new fish tank so that it's a healthy place for your fish to live. Feeding Most of the fish kept in domestic aquariums are fed on flakes or tiny live insects such as water daphnia. How often the fish are fed depends on the type of fish involved. How often to feed Coldwater fish can be fed once a day but tropical fish (with their higher metabolic rate) need twice daily feeding.

4 Processing Text “I was trying to comprehend the meaning of the words” Spock, Star Trek: e Final Frontier 4.1 From Words to Terms Aer gathering the text we want to search, the next step is to decide if it should be modied or restructured in some way to simplify searching. e types of changes that are made at this stage are called text transformation or, more oen, text pro- cessing. e goal of text processing is to convert the many forms that words can occur into more consistent index terms. Index terms are the representation of the content of a document that are used for searching. e simplest decision about text processing would be to not do it at all. A good example of this is the “nd” feature in your favorite word processor. By the time you use the nd command, the text you wish to search has already been gathered: it’s on the screen. Aer you type the word you want to nd, the word processor scans the document and tries to nd the exact sequence of letters that you just typed. is feature is extremely useful, and nearly every text editing program can do this because users demand it. e trouble is that exact text search is rather restrictive. e most annoying restriction is case-sensitivity: suppose you want to nd “computer hardware,”and there is a sentence in the document that begins with “Computer hardware.” Your search query does not exactly match the text in the sentence, because the rst letter of the sentence is capitalized.

Freshwater Aquarium - Essentials & Accessories All freshwater aquariums require similar basics – a good tank, a solid stand, quality accessories and maintenance tools. But to determine which kind of what items you need, first consider the aquatic life you want to keep. Freshwater fish come in all shapes and sizes with wide ranging requirements for their living conditions. Betta fish prefer smaller tanks with almost no current while Oscar cichlids need lots of room to grow and can swim in water with low currents. Understanding the needs of the fish you want will make choosing your tank essentials and accessories that much easier. Aquarium Furniture – tanks & stands The size of your tank depends on a lot of different factors: how much space do you have, how much weight can you manage (a gallon of water weighs nearly 9 lbs.), and most importantly what kind of aquatic life you want to keep. If your only limiting factor is fish type, remember that most freshwater fish require at least one gallon for every adult inch they are long; some species like goldfish require more. Talk to an aquatic specialist to make sure your tank is large enough to accommodate your fish. Furniture Type Description Compact design and footprint Ideal for a limited number of small fish Desktop tanks May include built-in filter and/or light Small, medium and large tanks available Larger tanks requires strong stands for support Standard aquariums Glass or acrylic Includes tank and at least one of the following: filter, hood, lamp, start-up conditioner, food Kits
