Transgressive Femininity Gender in the Scandinavian Modern Breakthrough Kristina Sjögren UCL PhD in Gender Studies 2 I, Kristina Sjögren, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This PhD thesis deals with how new discourses on femininity and gender developed in Scandinavian literature during the Modern Breakthrough, 1880-1909. Political, economic and demographic changes in the Scandinavian societies put pressures on the existing, conventional gender roles, which literature reflects; however, literature also created and introduced new discourses on gender. The main focus has been on transgressive female characters in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian novels, which I have seen as indicators of emerging new forms of femininity. The study shows how the transgression of gender boundaries is used in the novels, when presenting their views on what femininity is, should be or could be. In addition to analysing the textual strategies in the representation of these ‘deviant’ literary characters, I have examined how the relevant texts were received by critics and reviewers at the time, as reviews are in themselves discursive constructs. The theoretical basis of this study has mainly been Michel Foucault’s discourse theory, Judith Butler’s theory of performativity and Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of gender binarism. I have also used concepts from several (mainly Anglo-American and Scandinavian) literary gender theorists and historians in the analyses. The four novels analysed in this study are as follows: 1) Danish author Herman Bang’s early decadence novel Haabløse Slægter (1880), where I use a queer theory perspective. -

Jeg har gjennomgått et stort antall litteraturhistoriske framstillinger, med særlig fokus på verker som tematisk omfatter sfærer som Schjøtt tilhørte. Det vil si for eksempel litteraturkritikkhistoriske- eller kvinnelitteraturhistoriske verker. Hva gjelder mine teoretiske tilnærminger har jeg tatt utgangspunkt i feministisk litteraturteori og teori knyttet til kunst- og litteraturkritikk. For det andre har jeg gjort kvantitative og kvalitative undersøkelser av Schjøtts kritikerskap, for å vurdere hennes betydning og innflytelse i kritikkoffentligheten i hennes samtid. De kvantitative undersøkelsene har gått ut på å skaffe en oversikt over Mathilde Schjøtts publikasjoner. Her har jeg i stor grad tatt utgangspunkt i den nettbaserte bibliografien Norsk litteraturkritikk, men har i løpet av arbeidsperioden funnet ut at denne framstillingen ikke alene gir en fullstendig oversikt over Schjøtts litteraturkritiske utgivelser. De kvalitative undersøkelsene jeg har foretatt innebærer at jeg har analysert et utvalg av Mathilde Schjøtts litteraturanmeldelser, hovedsakelig med utgangspunkt i Beardsleys (1981) kategorisering av vurderingskriterier, for å vurdere hva som kjennetegner Schjøtts kritikker med tanke på innhold og utforming. -

HARALD NAESS GEORG BRANDES AND 19TH CENTURY SCANDINA- VIAN REALISM In considering the history of the European North-West, it is sometimes useful to refer to all 5 Nordic countries under one name-as Scandinavia, or, to use the local name, as Norden. However, we should keep in mind that these countries-Den- mark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden-are different racially, linguistically, economically, and that the bourgeois society which we associate with 19th century European realism developed differently in the five countries. Today there is the Nordic Council, a kind of inter-Scandinavian parliament with representatives from the five countries. There is a common labor market, passports are not needed for Scandinavians traveling from one country to another, and there is a variety of inter- Scandinavian projects, most easily carried out in the cultural sector, though not always effectively. Readers in one of the countries, for instance, do not show much interest for books from another. Lars Gustafsson, a prominent Swedish critic and author, told me recently that he did not know Norwegian literature after Ibsen, and even if I subtract a degree of playful exaggeration, there remains an arrogance that is, alas, symptom- atic: Stockholm bookstores, for instance, are often accused of not carrying Norwegian books. Hence it is possible to say that, despite many well-meant cultural efforts since the establish- ment of the Nordic Council (1952)-translation projects, author's seminars, etc.-the Scandinavian countries are in several ways as far apart as they were after the Napoleonic wars (which saw the last armed conflict between two Scandinavian countries).
