NEWSLETTER 46 (October 17, 2011) NEWSLETTER 46 (October 17, 2011) ECU PRESIDENT SILVIO DANAILOV VISITED ARMENIA AND MET WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA, MR. SERZH SARGSIAN On Saturday 15th, 2011, the ECU President, Mr. Silvio Danailov, visited Erevan (Armenia) and assisted as a VIP guest of the 60 birthday Jubilee of the legendary Armenian Grandmaster Rafael Vaganian at the Opera house in Erevan. After the celebration, Mr. Danailov had a dinner with the President of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Serzh Sargsian, who is on the same time President of the Armenian Chess Federation. Armenia is the first state in Europe where chess is obligatory discipline in the School curriculum. During the formal dinner, one of the main topics was the further development of chess in this country. They discussed also the possibilities Erevan to host one of the big European Championships in 2013. © Europechess.net Page 1 During his stay in Yerevan, Mr. Danailov also visited schools where he observed chess classes following which he visited the Chess House after Tigran Petrosian and Chess Academy where he had discussions with the authorities of the Armenian Chess Federation, Vice President Smbat Lputian and Secretary General Mr. Gaguik Oganessian. AEM Luxen Timisoara with Gata Kamsky won the Romanian Superliga Masculina with gained 17 match points. The silver was for the team of A.C.S. de Sah Apa Nova Bucuresti with gained 15 match points. The bronze was for C.S.Studentesc Medicina Timisoara with 14 match points. C.S. Politehnica Iasi won the Romanian Superliga Feminina with 16 match points. Second finished the team of C.S. AEM Luxten Timisoara with final result of 16 match points, after their loss in the direct game against C.S. Politehnica Iasi. Third finished the team of C.S.M. Bucuresti with result of 15 match points. Official web site: www.frsah.ro WIM KATERYNA DOLZHYKOVA WON THE UKRAINIAN WOMEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP WIM Kateryna Dolzhykova won the Ukrainian Women Chess Championship with 7 points. Second finished WIM Irina Andrenko with final result of 6.5 points. Third, on a point distance from the winner, finished IM Inna Gaponenko. The Championship was held on October 07-15, 2011 in Poltava, Ukraine. It was played in 9 rounds, using the Swiss system. Among the 26 participants was the members of the Ukrainian national team – Inna Gaponenko and Tatjana Vasilevich. Time control was 90 minutes for the first 40 moves + 30 minutes to the end of the game + 30 seconds increment for each move, starting from move one. With the same result of 5.5 points finished Sergei Karjakin, but he was declared on the second place on tie-break. Fabiano Caruana finished third with 5 points. In the men section as silver medalists finished the team of Italy, as bronze medalists – Austria. In the women section second finished the team of Germany, third is Hungary. The Mitropa Cup took place on October 07-16, 2011 in Merlimont, France. In the tournament participated the national teams of: Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Switzerland. Each team was composed of four men plus one reserve (for men´s section) and two women plus one reserve (for women's section) and one team captain. He obtained the Interviews... international grandmaster title in 2004, and his current FIDE rating is 2568. He is not related to former world champion Tigran V. Misha Savinov Petrosian or grandmaster Arshak Petrosian. Misha Savinov: Tigran, were you named after the ninth world champion Tigran V. Petrosian? Orders? Inquiries? You can Tigran Petrosian: Yes, my father is now call toll-free: a big fan of chess, so when Petrosian 1-866-301-CAFE defeated Botvinnik, he decided to name his future son after the champion. Naturally, he also wanted me to become a chess player. MS: What attracted you to chess when you began playing? TP: It is difficult to remember what I liked about chess as a 5-year-old! MS: Tell me about your first steps in chess. Where did you study the game? TP: I learned to play at age five; my first trainer was Honored Trainer of Armenia Gagik Sargissian. Later, in 1998, I took lessons from IM Melikset Khachian for a couple of years. Then I entered a chess academy in 2002, where I occasionally received instruction from Ashot Nadanian and Arsen Egiazarian, but I mostly worked on my own. MS: When did you earn your international titles? TP: At 18 years old I didn’t have an international title, but I set myself a goal of qualifying for the GM title in two years.     REGGIO EMILIA series A City in northern Italy which has hosted a traditional chess festival annually since 1958 to 2012. The town is also referred to by its more official name of Reggio nell'Emilia. The inhabitants of Reggio nell'Emilia (called Reggiani) usually call their town by the simple name of Reggio. One of the ideas of Enrico Paoli (GM Hon.), the Torneo di Capodanno had been during decades, the strongest tournament in the country, held annually for 54 editions without any interruption! Karpov won in January 1991. The peak was in 1991/92 when for the thirty-fourth tournament, the organisers managed to reach category 18 (average of Elo 2676), the strongest chess event at that time won by Anand ahead of joint second Gelfand and Kasparov.
