In India, war memorials are located in several different parts of the country, each counting and reminding us how grateful we are for the day we made it. Each war memorial in India is a first-of-its-own-kind tribute to the soldiers who have laid down their lives in wars (Indo-China War 1962, Indo- Pak War 1947, 1965, 1971, and many more). The only pur- pose of this war memorial is to salute the soldiers who had sacrificed in the United Nations Peace- keeping Mission. These war memorials took decades to build the space that honored our superheroes and marked our respect for them. Check out these War Memorials in India in detail. National War Memorial This war memorial sprawls over 40 acres at the India Gate complex in Delhi, India. It consists of five concentric circles, a central stone obelisk, and an eternal flame. The centre of this complex lies at a lower level than the surrounding features. It has 25, 942 names of martyrs that have been inscribed along with their ranks and regiments in the 16 walls of this memorial. The total cost incurred for building this memorial is around Rs 176 crore. India Gate, New Delhi India Gate is the Memorial to Undivided Indian Army soldiers who died during World War I between 1914 and 1921. The India Gate is located in New Delhi. It is located on Rajpath about 2.3 km from the Rashtrapati Bhavan. It is a memorial that is dedicated to 70,000 of the British Indian Army throughout their life for the country during World War -I and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This memorial in central Delhi contains the names of 13,300 servicemen, Indian and British inscribed on it. Chandigarh War Memorial A total of 8459 names of the deceased soldiers are inscribed on this war memorial since 1947. It is located in the Bougainvillea garden of Chandigarh. Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the war memorial on 17th August, 2006. Tawang War Memorial This memorial is situated amidst the snow-capped peaks at Tawang, in Arunachal Pradesh and stands in the memory of the braveheart Jaswant Singh Rawat, who fought all alone for 72 hours held back in- vading Chinese. It was built as a tribute to the martyrs of the 1962 Sino-Indian War. It is locally known as Namgyal Chortan. This memorial is 40-feet high war memorial and is constructed as a stupa. 5 Useful Links Names of 2420 Indian soldiers are engraved in gold on 32 black granite plaques. Darjeeling War Memorial This war memorial is dedicated to the Gurkha martyrs of Darjeeling. It was constructed in 1976, on the orders of then Deputy Commissioner of Darjeeling, Manish Gupta. War Memorial, IMA, Dehradun This war memorial is located within the boundaries of the Indian Military Academy. It was inaugurated in 1999 to honour the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. The face of the main structure of this war memorial replicates the Chetwode Tower. There are several names inscribed on the walls of the memorial from the officers who laid down their lives along with the bronze statue of the Gentleman Cadet carrying a sword. Kargil War Memorial, Drass Kargil War Memorial is situated on the Srinagar-Leh Highway. It was built in the memory of soldiers, and officers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives for the country during the Indo- Pakistan conflict in 1999. It is also known as the Vijaypath. This war memorial is located in Drass, in the foothills of the Tololing Hill. It was constructed to honor the memory of the soldiers and officers of the Indian Army who were killed during the 1999 conflict between India and Pakistan. The names of some gallant soldiers have also been in the tombstones of the memorial. Victory At Sea Memorial, Vizag Victory at Sea War Memorial was built in the year 1996. It was constructed to pay homage to all Indian Martyrs who lost their lives during the 1971 War with Pakistan. It is located near Ramakrishna Beach near to the Submarine Museum. This war memorial consists of a tri-service representation of artefacts on the seafront. Eme War Memorial, Bhopal This memorial is first of its kind in India as it provides light and sound facilities to narrate the stories of bravery of the nation’s brave soldiers, who lost their lives fighting for the nation. An Interpretation Centre has also been set up on the premises of this war memorial in Bhopal. In Bho- pal, an Interpretation Center was also set up on the premises as a semi-open space with an information display system that provides a preview to the visitors. 6 Useful Links War Memorial, Chennai The War Memorial Chennai is the memorial was formerly known as the Cupid's Bow. The Victory War Memorial in Chennai was erected to commemorate the victory of the Allied Forces in World War I in memory of those from Madras Presidency who lost their lives in the war. Later this memorial became the victory memorial of World War II in memory of those from the Madras presidency who lost their lives in the war. It is situated south of Fort St. George and it marks the beginning of the Marina beach, Chennai. National War Memorial, Pune This is the only war memorial which has been erected with the money of the citizens in South Asia. It is dedicated to the post-independence martyrs.
