Becker This qualitative study explored the role of Christian privilege in the college experiences of Jewish and Muslim undergraduates at one large public, land grant, research intensive university, a predominantly white institution (PWI) in the Midwest. I interviewed 13 participants, seven Muslims (four women, three men) and six Jews (three women, three men), about their experiences in college, how Christian privilege appeared (or did not) in those experiences, and how and if they defined Christian privilege for themselves. Through narrative inquiry, in single session, semi-structured interviews, I gathered the stories of these 13 participants and the role of Christian privilege in their college experiences at Midwest University (MU). This study provides an in depth exploration of what was in the current news when this study was conducted and written up regarding Jews and Muslims in the United States and particularly in higher education. A full chapter is dedicated to a history of religion, particularly Christianity and especially Protestantism, in the United States (and colonial America) and its higher education using Roger Geiger’s (2005) “The Ten Generations of American Higher Education” and Douglas Jacobsen and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen’s (2012) No Longer Invisible: Religion in University Education as guideposts for understanding that history. -

Righteous Empire Revisited MARTIN E. MARTY r I AHE WORD 'Protestant' in the subtitle of Righteous Empire I will neither strike terror nor inspire hope in the hearts of ~M^ most publics today. Before there was a United States, the people to whom the word 'Protestant' was applied after 1529 represented unsettlement and upheaval to popes and emperors, bishops and princes in formerly 'all-Catholic' European Chris- tendom. By 1933, however, when philosopher Alfred North Whitehead sur\'eyed Europe and the United States in Adventures of Ideas, he said of Protestant Christianity that it was plausible that 'its dogmas no longer dominate: its divisions no longer interest: its institutions no longer direct the patterns of liie.'i That was one side of his contrast, the other being that 'the reli- gious spirit as an effective element' in human affairs was as vital as ever—witness its triumph, he noted, in Gandhi's India. Isgrigg Bangor University Presented at the 46th Meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies INTRODUCTION Are Pentecostals simply evangelicals who have had the Pentecostal experience? 1 In recent years, this topic has found its way into the conversation about Pentecostal theology, especially on the academic level.2 As Pentecostal scholarship matures, many scholars are interested in not only doing theology as Pentecostals,3 but they are also working toward building a Pentecostal theology reflective of the movement’s true theological identity rather than simply evangelical or Fundamentalist theology plus a doctrine of the Spirit.4 1 For the purpose of this piece, we will work with some very general definitions.
