FUN PROJECT NO. 2 Kessler Park Improvements Previous work at Kessler Park since 2006: • Stone curbing to control stormwater is 40% complete. • 3 historic staircases restored: to the west of the Kansas City Museum, north of the Colonnade on the backside, and Prospect Point. • New signage on Cliff Drive, that is now one way going east for vehicles, walking and biking is west-bound lane. FUN PROJECT NO. 2 Kessler Park Improvements Previous work at Kessler Park since 2006: • Flying disc courses. • Playground with Kaboom at Concord Park (At Anderson and Gladstone, south of the Colonnade) by Scarri Renaissance and Pendleton Heights. • Mountain bike trails by Urban Trail Company and volunteer groups. FUN PROJECT NO. 2 Kessler Park Improvements Proposed future work at Kessler Park: Cliff Drive Corridor Management Commi ee (represents all of the neighborhoods in Historic NE) brought some ideas to the Parks Department a few weeks ago: • Nature Trails Signage • Pump-track Trails (dirt bikes, mountain bikes) • Sculpture and Artwork Trail near the KC Museum • Repurposing of Reservoir • Dog Park • Rock Climbing • Public Wi-Fi
FUN PROJECT NO. 3 Electric Park in the East Bo oms History of Electric Park: The early 1900s East Bo oms area was home to the Heim Brewing Co., the largest pre-prohibi on brewery in Kansas City and the fi h largest beer brewer in the na on. The Heim family had other enterprises in early Kansas City, such as the Fi h Street car line and the Home Telephone Company. FUN PROJECT NO. 3 Electric Park in the East Bo oms History of Electric Park: In order to draw patrons to their beer gardens, the brewery: 1. Invested heavily in the city’s street car system which was then run to the East Bo oms, and 2. Constructed the Electric Park, Kansas City’s first amusement park, illuminated with electric light, a novelty at the me. FUN PROJECT NO. 3 Electric Park in the East Bo oms The Future of Electric Park: The Heim Brewing complex was comprised of several structures including a brewhouse, firesta on, and bo ling warehouse. John McDonald first discovered the Heim Bo le Shop when he was working as a carpenter and the building housed Case cabinet supply. FUN PROJECT NO. 3 Electric Park in the East Bo oms The Future of Electric Park: John McDonald has teamed up with Jamie Jeffries to found Bo oms Up Collec ve, LLC. They are honoring the area’s history of food, fun, drink, and entertainment. Local Pig opened in 2012, Urban Provisions General Store in 2013.
FUN PROJECT NO. 3 Electric Park in the East Bo oms The Future of Electric Park: State and Na onal Historic Registry has been sought for the Bo le Shop building, white box remodel plans have been approved, and a phase one environmental survey on the area has been done. A series of community events have been held in order to engage the neighbors. A commissary kitchen will allow for incuba ng select local vendors and partnering with established local food/ community organiza ons. FUN PROJECT NO. 4 Tiny Homes Veterans Village • Veterans Community Project, 501(c)(3), founded by Chris Stout and Kevin Jamison, who served in the Army and Air Force before dedica ng their lives to helping other veterans. • The Land Bank of Kansas City, Missouri • Makes use of the large stock of vacant lots and abandoned and foreclosed homes in the metro area. FUN PROJECT NO. 4 Tiny Homes Veterans Village • The veterans homeless crisis in Kansas City is pervasive, urgent, and debilita ng. • Social service agencies es mate about 1,800 veterans are in need of permanent housing in the Kansas City area, however other es mates suggest the number is more than 9,000 veterans, with an addi onal 6,000 veterans on the edge of losing their permanent housing. FUN PROJECT NO. 4 Tiny Homes Veterans Village • Veterans o en waste hours per day seeking shelter, hindering their capacity to par cipate in income- genera ng ac vi es. • The Veterans Village program spurs new home building on vacant lands in established neighborhoods. • The program will benefit area veterans who are homeless, who need a temporary place to live as they get on their feet, and want to live with dignity.
FUN PROJECT NO. 4 Tiny Homes Veterans Village • Some veterans do not feel as comfortable living in group environments and would feel more secure in their own place, living independently. • Urban modern interior features within tradi onal style Tiny Homes provide a whole lot of room within their small floor plans, and provide a great example of what can be built on the smallest of Kansas City’s vacant lots.
FUN PROJECT NO. 5 The McFadden Brothers 18th and Vine Experience • An interac ve, family- friendly, world-class, Vegas-style jazz show that is offered on a permanent basis in Kansas City, MO. • Offered 4-6 mes per week for 10 months per year for show-goers to genuinely relive KC jazz heritage. • Generates new commerce, preserves musical viability, and brings Kansas City jazz greats and jazz to life for local residents and 24 million annual visitors.
