OPERA ON THE LAKE 2016 TURANDOT GIACOMO PUCCINI 20 JULY – 21 AUGUST 2016 No man shall ever possess her – the Chinese princess Turandot sets three riddles for every man that comes to woo her. So far none have been able to solve the riddles, and have paid with their heads. n unknown prince achieves the impossible: he cor- rectly answers all three questions. But Turandot A is still unwilling to surrender to him. So the Prince is ready to lay down his life if she can find out his name by morning. Throughout the night, no one may sleep: every- one must try to discover his name ... Calaf‘s aria »Nessun dorma« is what made Giacomo Puccini‘s last opera Turandot world famous. At Bregenz it echoes out into the night against the imposing back- drop of a dragon-shaped wall on Lake Constance. Marco Arturo Marelli‘s stage design makes use of Chinese sym- bols of power. The stage wall is inspired by the world‘s longest man-made structure, the Great Wall of China. At Bregenz the wall is criss-crossed by over two hund- red terracotta warriors, some of them sky-high, others half-submerged in the water. The opera begins in the middle of the coronation ceremony for the new king, Claudio. Hamlet struggles to conceal his dark suspicions that Claudio had his father killed in order to seize his crown and his wife. Faccio and Boito skilfully and effectively challenge the con- ventions of Italian opera, which they wanted to revitalise by infusing it with the spirit of Shakespeare‘s drama. He displays generosity but is conde- Hscending towards others. He commits a murder and is not afraid to confront his own death. The others dearly wish he‘d get his comeuppance, but no sooner is he gone than they miss him. In their timeless opera, Wolfgang A. Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte fashioned the contradictory and attractive Don Juan into one of the most memorable characters in opera. Death is present from the beginning. It seems Don Giovanni‘s many conquests are behind him now and nothing goes right for him. ZYKAN hat happened in Austrian politics between 1920 and 1938? Which individuals and institutions drove WAustro-fascism? These questions were explored – in sharp-tongued, grotesque and provocative fashion – by composer Otto M. Zykan and stage director Franz Novotny in their television film Staatsoperette. The film was broadcast once only, in 1977, and caused uproar and scandal. It was con- demned by one bishop as an »assault on the religious convic- tions of millions of Austrians« and by the Protestant Press Agency as a »tasteless distortion of Austrian history«. A version for the stage, which at that time was already planned, will now receive its world premiere at the Bregenz Festival. They don‘t know each other; he can‘t see her and she can‘t hear him. T She looks after the injured man in a dispassionate way; he begins to desire the woman that helps him. Both har- bour a dark secret that shapes their lives traumatically. In their inability to open up to another person, they both find a possibility for tentative trust. Isabel Coixet‘s film The Secret Life of Words has been adapted for the stage and the Czech composer Miroslav Srnka has produced a score of great sensitivity. It‘s only in singing that the two main characters Hanna and Joseph find a means of expressing themselves. They dampen down the noise of the outside world by the music that comes from inside them.
