Pope Francis appoints new Bishop of Port Pirie

Published: 03 August 2020

Fr Karol Kulczycki SDS (ACBC) Francis has appointed Fr Karol Kulczycki SDS, the former head of the Salvatorians in Australia, as the new bishop of the Diocese of Port Pirie in regional South Australia. Source: ACBC Media Blog.

Fr Kulczycki was born in Poland in 1966, ordained to the priesthood in Trzebinia in 1994, and is currently based in Poland. He spent 21 years serving the Church in Western Australia, including in parish ministry, as vocations director and as a college chaplain. In February 2018, while still serving in Australia, Fr Kulczycki was elected vice-provincial of the Polish province of the Society of the Divine Saviour – widely known as the Salvatorians. Two- and-a-half years on, has appointed him Bishop of Port Pirie. “Just a few weeks ago I had an interview for our Salvatorian newsletter and was asked how and where I see myself in 10 or 20 years. I replied that I would be where God sent me. I did not expect that God would act so quickly in my life,” Fr Kulczycki said. Fr Kulczycki will become the 12th Bishop of Port Pirie – including the bishops who led what was from 1887 until 1951 the Diocese of Port Augusta. He succeeds Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ, who has been Bishop of Port Pirie since 2009. Bishop O’Kelly also served as apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Adelaide for almost two years. It is not yet known when Fr Kulczycki will arrive in Australia, nor when he will be ordained bishop.

Car Parking on Slip road (front of the church) – this road is for Disabled Parking Only We ask that parishioners DO NOT park on this road. We have quite a few parishioners who now require disabled parking, so please leave this small road for them at all Masses.

Ministers Rosters at St David’s New rosters will come into effect beginning of September. If you wish to become a Reader or Commentator, please speak to Father James or David Reynolds or phone the Parish. If we are still permitted to have a full number of parishioners observing the distance rules at each mass, then we can have one person to administer communion with Father. Therefore, one Extra-ordinary Minister will be rostered at each Mass. If you DO NOT want to be on the list, please advise Denise ASAP before the next roster commences. Rosters will begin 1st Sunday in September until the last Sunday in October.

What is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

National Vocations Awareness Week On Saturday we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our first Australian born canonised saint. St Mary took bold new directions in the education and care of children. We know her saying ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’. We pray this week that many young people in our communities may embrace this spirit in response to the call of the Lord to serve as priests or consecrated religious. “Every vocation is born of that gaze of love with which the Lord came to meet us…We will succeed in our vocation once we open our hearts in gratitude and perceive the passage of God in our lives.” (Pope Francis)

Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop On Friday 7 August the Saint David’s School Community celebrated Mass for the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary was led by the spirit and was a person of action. Mary believed that we should never see someone in need without doing anything. With faith and trust in God, Mary worked to help others and this is our aim at Saint David’s Parish School. All students continued the day of celebration with our Annual St Mary of the Cross Mackillop Day Fete. Our Year 5 and 6 students arranged food and fun activities for all students to enjoy. Money raised on this day will be donated to “Mary MacKillop Today”
