It will direct you to valuable information regarding the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Educa- tion and the College of Business. It will lead you through our many programs of study, giving details about every course available at the time of printing, and it will guide you to the best opportunities for financial aid. It will give you useful information about our academic policies and procedures. In short, this catalog will provide a description of what we offer and how you can become a part of Frostburg State University. Like any map, what it cannot provide is the experience of Frostburg State University. It cannot describe the quality of our faculty and our support personnel. You may note that more than 80 percent of our faculty have Ph.D.’s, but it is important to know that they publish in the most prestigious books and Ronald Nowaczyk, Ph.D. President, Frostburg State University journals in the world, while still giving their full support and attention to their students. They pride themselves on the close and personal connections they form with students. It doesn’t tell you that we employ one faculty member for every 18 students and that you will never sit in a lecture hall with hundreds of students. It also cannot express the importance we place on providing support through our Center for Academic Advising and Retention, our Orientation Program or our Learning Connec- tions in which all incoming freshmen join a group of students with similar interests, then take some of their general education courses with those same students. Enduring friendships are often born of these communities. This catalog cannot give you a true sense of this beautiful, uncrowded campus in the mountains of Western Maryland, nor can it convey the environment that so many students say enhances both their learning and their development as human beings. These qualities can only be realized from experienc- ing this campus and allowing us the privilege of providing you an education. Governor Enrollments Soar at Maryland’s Colleges and Universities The following report highlights preliminary enrollment data submitted for fall 2010 by the State’s colleges and universities. Final enrollment figures which are reported later in the term may vary slightly from those included in this report. Opening Enrollment at Maryland Colleges and Universities, 1990 - 2010 This year’s headcount enrollments set 340,000 a new record high for the State’s postsecondary institutions. Total headcount enrollment at Maryland’s 320,000 colleges and universities increased by 3.6 percent to 368,126 students, a gain of 300,000 12,818 students since last year. Over the last 20 years, total enrollment 280,000 in Maryland’s degree-granting postsecondary institutions has grown by 260,000 nearly 42 percent, or over 100,000 students. 240,000 Maryland’s independent colleges and 1990 1992 1994 1996 1998 2 2002 2004 2006 2008 2010 universities experienced the largest 000 percentile gains of any higher education sector. Total enrollment at independent institutions increased by 4.5 percent (2,573 students), and accounted for 20.1 percent of the State’s enrollment growth. Last year, independent institutions were only responsible for 6.5 percent of total postsecondary enrollment gains.
