The pandemic has made essential self distancing and quarantining to arrest the spread of the Corona virus. As a result, most APS activities have been shelved for the time being. Being in isolation at home has been a mixed blessing.

I'm sorry this has delayed a little both my correspondence and this Newsletter. I expect spring will have more than its usual feeling of re-birth as we do some planting in affected areas of the garden, mostly with plants a metre or less in height (in accord with this NL's theme of 'Australian wildflower gardens). However we'll be away for most of September, in Newcastle and Sydney for GDSG talks, then Bourke (for the RAOU Congress - birds instead of plants) and finally Ballarat for the ASGAP Conference. I'm looking forward to meeting many GDSG members both during my travels and at Ballarat. TREASURER'S REPORT FINANCES - Bank balance at 1/8/95 is $1372.78 MEMBERSHIP - Membership of the Group is still spreading throughout Australia - only the Northern Territory is now unrepresented. An analysis of the 1994/5 membership locations showed the following: Vic. 49%, NSW 27%, Qld 8%, SA 6%, WA 4%, ACT 4% & Tas. 3% from a total of approximately 180 locations.

I dedicate my work to my beloved husband, Agung, and my sons, Odit and Yusta, for their spiritual support during my study. Abstract Xero- and scleromorphic adaptations are obviously shown by Australian plants, in response to the Australian climate and edaphic factors. Since these adaptations overlap, there are problems separating the two. Some qualitative hypotheses about the distinction between xero- and scleromorphic characters have been proposed. This research is an effort to quantitatively determine xeromorphic characters in some members of the Proteaceae, in order to elaborate upon some of the existing hypotheses about these characters. Twenty three species of Banksia, 16 species of Grevillea and 6 species of Orites were sectioned and observed under the light micrscope and measurements were made of the stomata! depressions, margin recurvations, cuticle thickness and hair dimensions.

As culmination it is also an impetus to continue to that journey. In achieving this personal goal many people, supervisors, friends, family and University colleagues have been instrumental in contributing to the final product. The initial motivation and inspiration for me to start this study was given by Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick, Dr. Elaine Stratford, and my friend Alison Howman. For that challenge I thank you. I am deeply indebted to my three supervisors Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick, Dr. Elaine Stratford and Dr. Aidan Davison. Each in their individual, concerted and special way guided me to this omega point.

  • Provisional List of Plants Requiring Urgent Management Intervention
WILDLIFE AND THREATENED SPECIES BUSHFIRE RECOVERY EXPERT PANEL Provisional list of plants requiring urgent management intervention Released on 23 April 2020 The 2019-20 bushfires in southern and eastern Australia have had severe impacts on many of the country’s approximately 25,000 plant species. The fires have covered an unusually large area and, in many places, have burnt with unusually high intensity. Although many plants have the capacity to respond positively to fire, the cumulative impact of the 2019-2020 fires and other stressors like high fire frequency or severity, drought, herbivory, or disease places many species at risk. Some species were considered threatened before the fires, and the fires have now likely increased their risk of extinction. Many other fire-affected plant species were not threatened before the fires - or had not previously had an assessment of extinction risk undertaken - but have now been burnt across much of their range, and may lack an ability to recover without help. To support protection and recovery of many of the fire-affected species, conservation action will be needed at many sites. This management will be supported by a wide range of government agencies, non-government conservation organisations, university researchers, Traditional Owner ranger teams, community groups and the public. A national provisional prioritisation was undertaken to assess 19,004 plant species against a set of eleven criteria which combine the proportion of the geographic range that burned, species fire response traits, and the interactive effects of other stressors such as drought, herbivory, disease, weed invasion and erosion. This prioritisation identified 709 plants as being at high risk from the impacts of the 2019-20 bushfires.
