This paper entitled A Description of Moral Values in SING Original Soundtrack Album. The aim of this research is to describes the moral values and the significance of moral values in life portrayed in the lyrics of SING Original Soundtrack Album. This paper applied descriptive qualitative research methods by read the lyrics carefully and repeatedly, collecting, listening, write and make some note,interpret the meaning and make conclusion The authors got the source of data from some books and website. The result of the study is presented in the form of paragraphs. In the song’s lyrics of SING Original Soundtrack Album, the autors found 3 data in form of strong-belief and 2 data in the form of self confidence.

Kertas karya ini berjudul “A Description of Moral Values in SING Original Soundtrack Album”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai moral dan manfaat dari nilai moral tersebut dalam kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu di SING Original Soundtrack Album. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengam membaca lirik lagu Original Soundtrack Album secara berulang dan teliti, memilih lirik lagu, mendengarkan lagu, mencatat lirik lagu, menafsirkan makna lagu dan membuat kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini disajikan dalam bentuk paaragraf. Pada lirik lagu di SING Original Soundtrack Album, penulis menemukan 3 data dari tipe moral tentang berkeyakinan kuat dan 2 data tentang kepercayaan diri.

I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is one of crucial tools of human beings to communicate. Without language, people will never able to communicate with other people. Many language in the worlds has a characteristics of a region or country. E. Bruce Goldstein (2008:2) says, "We can define language as a system of communication using sounds or symbols that enables us to express our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and experiences." Or in the other words means that with language we can describe our feeling,asking with each other people, we can express our ideas and tell other people what we want to do.

Human is social being so they need to communicate one another. Every word in their speech has some value that gives big impact for other.

Globalization brings both positive and negative effect. It gives great development in science, technology, economy, education and art. In human life literature as a part of art is influential. Literature is commonly classified as having two major forms; fiction and non fiction. The kind of literature are poem, song lyrics, novel, movie, drama and etc. Song is a part of literature and one of the branches of art that has big influence for the people.

Song easily found in daily life because song is universal. Song or music is very useful since they have various values such as moral, religious, educational and sociological values. Moral values can be well delivered by using music, because

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA many people use song to express their feeling at the moment. Music is often used a unique delivery of messsages through songs. It is undeniable that song lyrics are the dominant factor in messaging as part the frame of the song that ends in the enjoyment by the listener. Or in the other words the lyrics of the song is able to inflict many perceptions that are strongly influence by the level of understanding a person who comes from life experience owned.

As Ursery (2002:2) says, moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in life. Moral values are set of principles guiding us to evaluate what is right or wrong. Literary work were created in addition to providing entertainment or fun, as well as being a means of cultivating moral values. The existence of moral values in literature is expected to generate positive values for the reader, so they are sensitive to issues related to social life and enourage to behave. Moral values can not only be obtained by discussion in formal situations or books, but also people can use songs to deliver the moral message of the songs. As a human we must have morality because if we are not have morality we will rejected by other people and not be respected by other people.

Generally, every writer has plenty of imagination stated in the lyrics. Lyric as quoted from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyrics is ―a set of the words that accompany music, either by speaking or singing‖. Commonly, there are many bands or solo singer in the music industry.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA SING : Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack to the 2016 animated musical film SING. There are many values that are meaningful about the song that aim to inspire and entertain people and send a message. The soundtrack includes classic songs performed by the film‘s main cast as well as the song Don‘t you worry ‗bout a thing – Tori Kelly, I‘m Still Standing – Taron Egerton, Set it All

Free – Scarlett Johansson and etc.

From discussion above, it is very interesting to do a research about the moral values in song lyrics. Because from the song lyric we not just enjoy the music but also we can learn moral values. Therefore, the writer takes the title of this study as ―

A Description of Moral Value in SING Original Soundtrack Album‖.

1.2 The Problem of the Study

Based on the explanation above,the problem of the study is :

1. How is Strong-Belief described in SING Original Soundtrack Album ?

2. How is Self-Confidence described in SING Original Soundtrack

Album?

1.3 The Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds of moral values and to

find out the meaning of those moral values in SING Original Soundtrack

Album.

1.4 The Scope of the Study

In order to make learners not to be confused in comprehending the message.

The scope of the study is only to discuss and describe about the kinds of

Soundtrack Album has sixteen lyrics, so, it is important to select the song

lyrics that reflect the values. The writer chooses five hits songs from SING

Original Soundtrack Album, They are (1) ― Don‘t you worry ‗bout a thing ,

(2) I‘m Still Standing , (3) Shake it Off , (4) My Way , (5) I don‘t wanna.

Because those selected songs contain several values which is the background

and the reason why the writer chooses this study.

1.5 Methods of the Study

This paper applied descriptive qualitative research methods by read the lyrics

carefully and repeatedly, collecting, listening, write and make some

note,interpret the meaning and make conclusion. In addition, the writer also

use internet that have many website about definition of moral values and to

get more information of the song.

2.1.1 Lyric

According to Dallin (1994), ―Lyrics are written as a form of interaction between the writer and the listeners. Most of the times, they carry a message

(whatever that might be) with the purpose of motivating the listeners, at least, to think about it. Such a purpose and form of interaction are embedded in the cultural context of these people, according to their musical preferences, time, etc‖. Every song has its message. Lyrics is an expressing a person‘s personal feelings and thoughts.

2.1.2 The Description of Moral Values

Values is an important element in lyrics. If we take the notion "value" , we will find out that it is a set of rules or concepts that have a particular meaning for a person or social group and make a contribution into some aspect of life. The philosophical study of values has a name, it's called "axiology". It studies the metaphysical and epistemological status of values, broadly understood. The word axiology, derived from a Greek word meaning "value", is coming to be used for the study of the general theory of value, including the origin, the nature, the classifiation, and the place of values in the world.

According to the dictionary, values are "things that have an intrinsic worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor," or "principles, standards, or qualities considered worthwhile or desirable." However, it is important to note that, although

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA we may tend to think of a value as something good, virtually all values are morally relative neutral, really until they are qualified by asking, "How is it good?" or "Good to whom?" The "good" can sometimes be just a matter of opinion or taste, or driven by culture, religion, habit, circumstance, or environment, etc. Again almost all values are relative. The exception, of course, is the value of life.

Talking about values, Oxford Advances Learner‘s Dictionary defines that it is beliefabout what is right and wrong and what is important in life

(Hornby,2010:1649).

In a later volume, Parker defines values as "either a joy-giving activity or passitivity or else as the assuagement of desire." The satisfactions of desires may take any one of a number of forms : " (1) satisfactions in relatively spontaneous activities or passitivities; (2) satisfactions arising from meeting the objectives of conscious desires; (3) satisfactions arising from the meeting of personal-social standards set for these satisfactions

Moral refers to manner, character and proper behaviour. Based on "Webster

New World Dictionary of American Language", Moral is thing that related with skill to decide right and wrong of behavior that accepted by citizen. Moral is relate to the process of individual socialization, without no moral human never do the process of socialization.

According to Carol K. Sigelman (1995: 330) affirms that there are three basics components of morality, thus are :

a. An affective oremotional component

concerning for other feelings that surround right or wrong actions and that

motivate thoughts and actions or behavior.

b. A cognitive component

A cognitive component focuses on the way we conceptualize right and wrong

and make decisions about how to behave.

c. A behavioral component

A behavioral component reflects how we actually behave when for example

we do or have something that we know is bad or wrong, or help a needy

person.

2.1.3 Moral Values

Literary work contained moral values one of that is song. the moral value contained in a song is very important. Ursery (2002:2) says, moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in life. Moral values are set of principles guiding us to evaluate what is right or wrong. We growth with moral values until now, we learn it from childhood.

Moral value is value that can't be separated with other values. Bertens

(1997:142-147) says, every values will get quality if it has relation with other values,

Moral values are characterized :

a. Responsibility

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Moral values related to the human person who is responsible. A moral value only is realized in actions that are fully the responsibility of the person concerned. Humans themselves become a source of moral values. b. Conscience

Value always contains some sort of invitation or appeal. Moral value is that only raising the value of the voice of conscience that accused persons when underestimate or against moral values and praised us when realizing moral values c. Obligation

Moral values that is required for granted unconditionally. These values apply to humans as humans. Expected and even demanded that everyone uphold moral values and practice. Moral obligation does not come from the outside or institutions but is rooted in people's own humanity. d. Religion

Religion also gives many contribution in moral values development. Someone who has religion, they should control their act and attitude because in the

Holy Qur'an, there are prohibitation, commands, and punishment. Many people appeals to God's Law the ultimate test of right and wrong. It can be understood that religion is a foundation of moral values. e. Formality

Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral values did not separate with other values. Moral values are nothing without other values. It is

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA form of formality. Max Scheler mentioned in Bertens that moral values "get a lift" to other values.

There are kinds of moral values, such as :

1. Bravery

Bravery is face (something involving possible unfortunate or disastrous

consequences) or endure (as hardship) use with self-control and mastery

of tear and often with a particular objective in vie. Bravery is able to meet

danger or endure pain or hardship without giving in to fear. Bravery is

arising from or suggestive or mastery of fear and intelligent use of

faculties especially under duress. (Webster: 1981 p.269).

2. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling on behalf of a cause of subject,

something that inspires or is pursued or regarded with ardent zeal or

fervor. Enthusiast is a person who is or believes to himself to be inspired

or possessed by divine power or spirit, or a person who is visionary,

extravagant, or excessively zealous in his religious views or emotion.

While enthusiastic is relating to enthusiasm or inspired preaching.

Enthusiasm is having an ardent, reception, responsive, temperament or

tending to give oneself wholly to whatever engages one's interest or liking

(Webster: 198 p.757)

Kind is the equivalent of what has been offered or received. Kind is

applying more often to the disposition to sympathy and helpfulness.

Kindly is stressing more the expression of the sympathetic, helpful nature,

mood or impulse (a kind person with a kindly interest in the problem of

other). Kindhearted is having sympathetic nature: Humane,

compassionate. Kindheartedness is the quality or state of being

kindhearted. (Webster: 1981 p.1243).

4. Honesty

Honesty is estimable character; fairness and straight forwardness of

conduct or adherence to the fact. Honesty is freedom from subterfuge or

duplicity, truthfulness, and sincerity. (Webster 1981 p.1086).

5. Love and Affection

Love is fell affection for. Love is a communications code word for the

letter. Love is fell referent adoration for (God). (Webster: 1981 p.134t).

Affection is action of affection or state of being affected. Affection is kind

feeling tender attachment: love, good, will. Affection is a strong emotion

or passion (as anger, fear or hatred); feeling aspect of consciousness (as in

pleasue or displeasure); to bend of mind: feeling or natural impulse

swaying the mind: propensity, disposition. (Webster 1981 p.35).

6. Loyalty

being loyal: fidelity or tenacious adherence. Loyal is faithful and the

devoted to a private person: faithful or tenacious in adherence to s cause,

ideal, practice or custom. (Webster: 1981 p.1342)

7. Peace-Loving

Peace is harmony in human or personal relation. A mental or spiritual

condition marked by freedom from disturbance or oppressive thoughts or

emotion. (Webster: 1981 p.1660) Loving word is from love, a lover

section or attitude. (Webster: 1981 p.1340)

8. Perseverance

Perseverance is the action or the fact or an instance of persevering,

continued or steadfast pursuit or prosecution of an undertaking or aim.

Perseverance is the condition or power of persevering. persistence in the

pursuit of objectives or prosecution of any project. Perseverant is able or

willing to persevere. (Webster: 1981 p.1685).

9. Self-confidence

Self-Confidence is Confident in one self. Self-confident is confident of

one's own strength or ability. (Webster: 1981 p.2059)

10. Sincerity

Sincerity is the quality or state of being sincere: an expression of a sincere

feeling. (Webster: 1981 p.2122).

As the paper explains in previous chapter,moral values are the people's belief about what is important in life. It is concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human characacters. In the lyrics of SING

Original Soundtrack songs, we can finds moral values delivered by the singer. The description based on the 5 lyrics of SING Original Soundtrack album, they are :

3.1.1 Strong Belief

Strong is able to bear or endure: able to with-stand stress or violence; having or exibiting moral or intelectual force, endurence or vigor. (Webster 1981 p.2265).

Belief is a state or habit of mind in which trust, confidence, reliance, is place in some person or thing. Belief is something believed, statement or body of statement held by the advocates of any class of views; conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon, especially when based on an examination of the ground for accepting it as true or real (Webster: 1981 p.2000).

3.1.1 Don’t you worry bout a thing - Tori kelly

The first description is Don't you worry bout a thing , the song tell everybody have a thing like a dream. Sadly, too often, we hear phrases that call for us to get our heads out of the clouds and come down to earth and that ask us to stop dreaming dreams because they will never come true. Sometimes these voices from others, and sometimes they come from ourselves. For far too long we have underestimated the

In this part of song lyrics tells about what people say badly about our habits.

The lines ―that‘s what people say‖ are a direct response that these people don‘t

know what they are talking about, and don‘t really know us.

From the lyrics song above the singer tells an old school reference to the habits and personalities of people. ―Players are always going to play‖ means people are always going to do what they do, and ―haters gonna hate‖, means there are always going to be people that don‘t like what the players do. It‘s a universal truth. The counter saying to this has always been, ―don‘t hate the player, hate the game.‖ That is, don‘t hate the participants of something you don‘t like, hate the actual game, system, or thing that they participate in.You can hate football all you want, but don‘t hate the quarterbacks, they are just playing. So people that break hearts are going to continue to break hearts, there will always be broken hearts. Likewise, there will always be fake people, that‘s all they know how to do. 4.1.1 Conclusion

After analyzing all the data Types of Moral SING Original Soundtrack lyrics,

in this paper found the moral values. Based on the analysis, it is concluded

that :

1) There are two types of moral values that we can found in SING Original

Soundtrack lyrics. There are can be found 3 data in form of strong-belief

and 2 data in the form of self confidence.

2) By reading and studying the moral value and attitude found out in

conclusion the song listeners SING Original Soundtrack song. The listener

can be influenced by the lyrics of the songs which tell moral value. So, the

singer conveys that the strong-belief and self confidence teaching with

contains in the lyrics are useful as a guidance in human‘s life, especially

for the young generation. It can change the human‘s mind. And then

people may have a good moral and do not give up for their life.

Relating to the facts above, the writer would like to put forward some

suggestion as follows :

meaning song. There is a lot of moral values shared to the hearer.

2) The writer expects that good attitude in the SING Original Soundtrack

song can be good for the readers in their life and family.

3) Song can be used for motivation students of English Diploma (D3) to

study English better .

4) This graduating paper can be a reference for those people who want to do

further research of moral values in other song lyrics.

5) Lastly, the writer fully realized that this study is still far from being

perfect; therefore any constructive critism will be highly appreciated.
