November 10, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: James Cassidy (859) 431-6216 [email protected] L’Opera Famiglia (Two couples, great arias) 7:30 p.m. November 21, 2020 St. Peter in Chains Cathedral Basilica 8th and Plum Cincinnati, OH The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra continues its 29th season of in-person performances and live streaming with an evening of operatic and sacred arias. The KSO, over the last 20 seasons, has offered audiences complete concert operas — Tosca, Otello, La Boheme, Rigoletto, Samson & Delilah and Turandot. These productions featured a number of internationally recognized singers, many with local ties (CCM and the Cincinnati Opera). Four of these artists return as two couples for L’Opera Famiglia on November 21 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains. Mezzo soprano Stacey Rishoi appeared in a KSO “Sopranos” evening and as Delilah (Samson & Delilah). Her husband Gustav Andreassen (bass) sang the role of Sparafucille (Rigoletto). Stacey and Gus when not on the road reside Bellevue, KY. Stuart Neill KSO at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral Feb. 23, 2020 (tenor) and Sandra Lopez (soprano) met as Rodolfo and Mimi in the KSO’s 2007 production of La Boheme. They were married a couple years later and live in Miami. “As with any team sport or artistic collaboration, cast chemistry is vital for success. We were fortunate for the stars to align to find these wonderful performers available this week,” commented KSO music director, James Cassidy. Those who don’t think that opera is their cup of tea, might be surprised to find many of the selections on the program very familiar to a universal audience (see below). -

"Moonrise Kingdom" Screenplay by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola May 1, 2011 INT. BISHOP’S HOUSE. DAY A landing at the top of a crooked, wooden staircase. There is a threadbare, braided rug on the floor. There is a long, wide corridor decorated with faded paintings of sailboats and battleships. The wallpapers are sun-bleached and peeling at the corners except for a few newly-hung strips which are clean and bright. A small easel sits stored in the corner. Outside, a hard rain falls, drumming the roof and rattling the gutters. A ten-year-old boy in pajamas comes up the steps carefully eating a bowl of cereal as he walks. He is Lionel. Lionel slides open the door to a low cabinet under the window. He takes out a portable record player, puts a disc on the turntable, and sets the needle into the spinning groove. A child’s voice says over the speaker: RECORD PLAYER (V.O.) In order to show you how a big symphony orchestra is put together, Benjamin Britten has written a big piece of music, which is made up of smaller pieces that show you all the separate parts of the orchestra. As Lionel listens, three other children wander out of their bedrooms and down to the landing. The first is an eight-year-old boy in a bathrobe. He is Murray. The second is a nine-year-old boy in white boxer shorts and a white undershirt. He is Rudy. The third is a twelve-year-old girl in a cardigan sweater with knee-high socks and brightly polished, patent-leather shoes. -

Throughout the term we will invite a variety of special guests to enrich your understanding of the films in the series. He served as Music Director of the New York City Opera for 14 seasons and was hailed for his leadership of the orchestra. He was also Music Director of the Richmond Symphony (VA) for 12 seasons. Recipient of Columbia University’s Ditson Conductor’s Award, Mr. Manahan was also honored by the American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP) for his “career-long advocacy for American composers and the music of our time.” His Carnegie Hall performance of Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra was hailed by audiences and critics alike. -

Le Parrain constitue un excellent spectacle, un peu longuet à notre avis (surtout dans sa partie sicilienne), mais solidement, habilement mis en scène par Francis Ford Coppola, trente et un ans, déjà connu comme réalisateur de The rain people et comme scénariste de Patton. Le grand mérite de Coppola est d'avoir engagé Marlon Brando dans la rôle du « Parrain ». Avec sa voix caverneuse et son masque d'empereur romain, Brando est superbe d'autorité, d'onction, d'orgueil retenu, de finauderie. C'est César « mafioso ». Dès la première scène, au cours de laquelle il fait la leçon à un quémandeur maladroit, il impose son personnage. On ne voit que lui et on regretterait de ne pas le voir davantage (son rôle est relativement court), si Al Pacino, qui incarne Michaël (le fils prodigue et heureusement retrouvé), n'était lui aussi remarquable. -

For many lovers of film, American cinema of the late 1960s and early 1970s – dubbed the New Hollywood – has remained a Golden Age.
